The morphology of oocysts of E. media Kessel, 1929, has been studied and two types have been found. Significant differences were observed in length of the oocysts (average values 29.05 microns with type I and 32.88 microns with type II), in width of the micropyle (5.21 and 3.72 microns, respectively) and in width of the sporocysts (6.67 and 8.00 microns). Marked differences were found even in the shape of the residual bodies of the sporocysts and in the structure of the oocyst wall in the region of the micropyle.

Feces were collected from 17 pigs (aged 4-8 weeks) in several farms situated within the region of Hanoi. By coproscopy of the samples, eggs of Ascaris suum and Oesophagostomum dentatum were detected as well as oocysts of Eimeria scabra, E. debliecki, E. perminuta and E. suis, and in addition to it, cryptosporidia to an extend indicating a considerable incidence of this parasitic protozoan in the country.

The prevalence of toxoplasmosis among inhabitants of the Niger Delta.

Blood samples from 1,650 inhabitants of the Niger Delta were examined for Toxoplasma antibodies by the Sabin--Feldman dye-test. Of that number, 972 (58.9%) presented significant antibody titres. The prevalence rates of the infection varied among different age groups. The highest prevalence rate was recorded among 16-20 years age group (75.3%) and the lowest among inhabitants over 50 years old. Children 1-5 years old had a relatively high prevalence rate (66.0%), with a proportionately higher dye-test antibody titres. More females (64.8%), than males (53.0%) were infected. Four types of gland cells--escape, head, praeacetabular and postacetabular--were demonstrated by histochemical methods in the cercaria of Orientobilharzia turkestanica. The secretion of the head gland contains proteins with cystine and phospholipids. It exhibits the acid phosphatase activity. The secretion of the escape glands contains proteins with cystine and cysteine and the secretion of the postacetabular gland cells proteins with cystine, cysteine and tyrosine, and neutral and acid mucosubstances.

Respiration of homogenates and isolated mitochondria of T. crassiceps larvae was measured. Respiration (about 70%) could be inhibited by cyanide, indicating that an important part is played by classical respiratory chain. When succinate was used as substrate, relatively low respiratory rates were measured, mitochondria showing higher affinity to NADH. Above a half of respiratory rate remained unchanged even at very low oxygen concentrations. Fumarate exhibited inhibitory activity on respiration of T. crassiceps mitochondria. Respiration in which NADH was used as substrate was twice as much more sensitive to inhibition by fumarate than respiration stimulated...

A comparison of the ultrastructure of intestinal cells of two taxonomically very close nematode species, Protostrongylus commutatus and Protostrongylus rufescens, revealed many interesting facts. The concentration of mitochondria in the basal part of intestinal cells, which is conspicuous particularly in P. rufescens, indicates that the nutrients penetrate also through the cuticle. An enormous occurrence of granular endoplasmic reticulum in the intestinal cells of P. commutatus shows an excessive protein synthesis. It may be supposed that the proteins will be used mainly for the construction of sex products, which are extremely abundant in P. commutatus....

A new species, Demodex tauri sp. n., is described in all stages of the life cycle from the hair follicles and ducts of the sebaceous glands on the eyelids of cattle in Czechoslovakia. It is compared with other demodicids described from cattle. Observations on the prevalence, habitat, and pathogenicity of the new species are presented.

Bovicola limbata Gervais, 1844 has been cultured in vitro at 35 +/- 1.5 degrees and 75 +/- 5% R.H. using scrapings from goatskin and host hair as food. In these conditions its complete life cycle has been obtained. New data are given on the biology of this species: maximum, minimum and average number of eggs laid per female; reabsorbed, embryonal, hatched and unhatched eggs; percentage of specimens that reached the second, third and adult instars; mortality percentage in the first, second and third instars.
