Amoebae isolated from organs of farmed tilapias, Oreochromis niloticus

Three amoeba species were isolated from 3 out of 193 farmed tilapias, Oreuchromis niloticus (L.), screened for the presence of free-living amoebae in parenchymatous organs. Hurtmannella vermiformis Page, 1967 and Rosculus ithacus Hawes, 1963 were isolated from the kidney tissue. The third strain isolated from the liver shared morphological features of Mayorella and Platyamoeha spp. and therefore its taxonomic position has not been determined as yet. Pathogenicity of cloned strain of H. vermiformis was proved in two fish hosts.

Fifty-day-old fry of tilapia hybrids (Oreochromis aureus x niloticus) were placed in aquaria containing sediment with oocysts of Eimeria (sensu lato) vanasi Landsberg et Paperna. In the first 29 h after exposure sporulated oocysts in the stomach and free sporozoites in the gut could be found in examined fish. During a survey of the coccidian parasites of reptiles, caryosporan oocysts were found in the faeces of wild and captive European viperid snakes Vipera berus (L.) and V.ammodytes (L.). Thirty two of 37 examined V. berus (86%) and 9 of 17 examined V. ammodytes (53%) specimens were found to be passing caryosporan oocysts. Isolation and characterization of cytosolic malate dehydrogenase from Trichomonas vaginalis

Malate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.37.) (MDH) was purified to apparent homogeneity from the cytosolic fraction of the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis Donne. The four step purification included ion-exchange chromatography (DEAE-Sephacel and Q-Sepharose, elution with NaCl) and affinity chromatography (Reactive Red Agarose, elution with NADH and NaCl). The enzyme was purified about 132-fold (30.6% yield) to a specific activity of 352 units mg(-1). Electrophoretic variations of peptidase E (PEPE) in characterizing clones and isolates of Plasmodium falciparum from different geographical areas

Six clones were obtained from each Plasmodium falciparum (Welch, 1897) isolate from different geographical areas, Gombak A (Malaysian), Gombak C (Malaysian), ST 9 (Malaysian), ST 12 (Malaysian), ST 85 (Malaysian), ST 148 (Malaysian), Gambian (African) and TGR (Thailand) isolates using the limiting dilution method (Rosario 1981). Forty-eight clones were obtained and were characterized by an electrophoresis isoenzyme analysis of PEPE (Peptidase E) (EC. 3.4.11 or 13). Results showed that they were pure clones as they were monovariant with regards to this enzyme unlike their parent isolates which were divariant.

Khawia baltica (Cestoidea: Caryophyllidea) from Barbus barbus bocagei from some rivers in Northern Portugal

Eight species of fishes from rivers of Northern Portugal were examined for cestodes but only one, Barbus barbus bocagei (Steindachner), was infected: river Este (4 of 12 infected, 1,1,4 adult and 37 juvenile cestodes found respectively), Lima (1 of 8 infected, 1 juvenile cestode), Paiva (1 of 5 infected, 57 juvenile cestodes) and Sousa (1 of 13 infected, 1 adult cestode).
