Some aspects of the taxonomy and biology of dracunculoid nematodes parasitic in fishes: a review

The nematode superfamily Dracunculoidea includes 166 recognized species, of which 150 (90%) are parasitic in about 300 species of freshwater, brackish-water and marine fishes. Fish dracunculoids are placed in 31 genera (86% of all dracunculoid genera) belonging to eight of the nine dracunculoid families: Anguillicolidae, Daniconematidae, Guyanemidae, Lucionematidae, Micropleuridae, Philometridae, Skrjabillanidae, and Tetanonematidae; the genus Lockenloia is considered incertae sedis. Nereis diversicolor O.F. Müller and N. succinea Frey et Leuckart (Polychaeta, Nereidae) living in brackish shallow areas in Denmark are naturally infected with tetractinomyxon actinospores. A new species, Sphaeromyxa noblei sp. n., is described from Heteroclinus whiteleggii (Perciformes: Clinidae), a marine fish from the coast of New South Wales in Australia. This raises the number of Sphaeromyxa species to 38; their list is presented. Transmission electron microscopy of presumed sensory receptors in the forebody papillae of Crepidostomum metoecus (Digenea: Allocreadiidae)

Five types of presumed ciliate sensory receptors were detected in the forebody papillae of the adult fish trematode, Crepidostomum metoecus (Braun, 1900). The cilia are short and submerged in a tegumental pit. The apical bulb part of all types of receptors observed is supported by a dense collar and connected to the tegument basal plasma membrane by a circular septate junction. In sensory receptors types I and III no rootlet is present; the bulbs of sensory receptors types III and IV contain an electron-dense formation.

Progrillotia pastinacae Dollfus, 1946 (Cestoda: Trypanorhyncha) is redescribed from the spiral valve of Dasyatis pastinaca (Linnaeus) (Dasyatididae) from the coast of France. Metacestodes of Mesocestoides sp. were recorded from Sturnus vulgaris (Passeriformes: Sturnidae) in the Czech Republic in April 2002. They were found in a cutaneous cyst and in the thoracic region of the body cavity of the bird. This is the first record of metacestodes of Mesocestoides sp. in this host species in Europe as well as the first finding of the formation of a cutaneous cyst provoked by this parasite. The nematode parasite Huffmanela huffmani Moravec, 1987 (Trichosomoididae) infects swimbladders of fishes in the family Centrarchidae. Only fish collected from the upper San Marcos River (Texas) have been found infected with H. huffmani eggs with a prevalence of 90%. Hundreds of thousands of H. huffmani eggs have been observed in these fish but only a few specimens of adult worms have ever been found. Hysterothylacium winteri sp. n. (Nematoda: Anisakidae) was collected from the intestine of a marine-estuarine fish, Eleginops maclovinus (Valenciennes) (Perciformes: Eleginopsidae), from Abtao in the Gulf of Ancud, Chile. Pterygosoma livingstonei sp. n. collected from the Kenyan lizard Agama caudospinosa Meek shows morphological affinities with other South African congener species parasitizing lizards of the genus Agama, especially with P. triangulare Lawrence, 1936, but it differs in having glabrous genua II and III. The possibility of vertical transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes persulcatus Schulze, 1930 ticks was studied in the progeny of 20 females collected from the vegetation in an active focus of ixodid tick-borne borrelioses (ITBB) located in the Perm oblast, Russia, where Borrelia garinii and B. afzelii are circulating. Collections of 'Echinorhynchus salmonis' from Britain and Ireland deposited in The Natural History Museum, London (1918.104.22.168-12 and 1922.214.171.124-127) were re-identified as Acanthocephalus clavula and Acanthocephalus lucii respectively. The amphipod, Pontoporeia affinis, European intermediate host of E. salmonis, does not occur in the British Isles, so it is concluded that E. salmonis is absent from British and Irish freshwater fishes.

Examination of the original literature concerning species of Philometra (Philometridae, Dracunculoidea) parasitic in the abdominal cavity of European cyprinids revealed that P. abdominalis Nybelin, 1928 is a junior synonym of P. ovata (Zeder, 1803), a parasite of cyprinids of the genera Gobio, Phoxinus and Leuciscus. The valid name of the species parasitizing cyprinids of the genera Abramis, Rutilus and Vimba, mostly reported erroneously as P. ovata, is P. cyprinirutili (Creplin, 1825) comb. n.
