Schistosomes causing cercarial dermatitis: a mini-review of current trends in systematics and of host specificity and pathogenicity

The human infection known under the names cercarial dermatitis or swimmers' itch is generally associated with swimming in lakes all over the world, however, a number of outbreaks of cercarial dermatitis developing in salt or brackish waters are also reported. The disease presents as allergic reaction which is able to trap and eliminate the parasites in the skin. However, the infection can be linked to more than skin symptoms under certain circumstances. Bird schistosomes of wildfowl in the Czech Republic and Poland

In 2005, we dissected 102 wildfowl from the Czech Republic and 73 wildfowl from Poland including representatives of Anseriformes, Gruiformes and Gaviiformes. Schistosome infection was found in a total of 21 (29%) and 23 (23%) birds from Poland and the Czech Republic, respectively. All infected birds belonged to the order Anseriformes. The prevalences of nasal and visceral species were, respectively, 22% and 16% in Poland and 6% and 19% in the Czech Republic. Trichobilharzia regenti is a neurotropic bird schistosome, causing cercarial dermatitis in humans. In this study, ZAP cDNA expression library from Radix peregra s. lat. hepatopancreases containing intramolluscan stages of T. regenti was constructed and screened using PCR with specific and degenerate primers, designed according to previously described serine and cysteine peptidases of other parasite species. Twelve tundra swans, Cygnus columbianus (Ord), from Nevada and one from New Mexico were collected and examined for schistosomes. Mature worms, determined as Allobilharzia visceralis, were found in 92% of the swans, in the inferior mesenteric vein of the large intestine and its branches. The terminal phase of the migration of Trichobilharzia regenti Horák, Kolářová et Dvořák, 1998 in the definitive host (Anas platyrhynchos f. domestica) was studied 12-27 days post infection (p.i.). Brain meninges were the last part of the nervous system where the worms were detected before their occurrence in the nasal cavity. In meninges, the parasites started to feed on red blood cells. Scanning electron microscopy of the cystidicolid nematode Ascarophis mexicana Moravec, Salgado-Maldonado et Vivas-Rodríguez, 1995 enabled the first detailed study of its cephalic structure. In contrast to most Ascarophis species, its pseudolabia are highly reduced and sublabia are unlobed and weakly developed.
