Schistosoma mansoni glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase is a lung-stage schistosomula surface membrane antigen

Hatem Tallima, Rashika El Ridi

Folia Parasitologica 55[3] 180-186 (2008) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2008.025

We have previously reported that Schistosoma mansoni larvae emerging from host lung at pH 7.5-7.8 and then fixed with diluted formaldehyde (HCHO) readily bind radiation-attenuated cercariae (RA) vaccine serum antibodies, as assessed by indirect membrane immunofluorescence (IF). Here we show that S. mansoni schistosomula emerging from lung pieces under 5% CO2 (pH <=7.3) readily bind RA vaccine serum antibodies, provided they have been incubated for 12 h at pH 7.5-7.8 in foetal calf serum-free RPMI medium, and fixed with diluted HCHO. Ex vivo larvae exposed during incubation to GW4869, a specific inhibitor of tegument-bound, neutral...

Folia Parasitologica 55[4] 265-269 (2008) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2008.034

Gyrodactylus pisculentus sp. n. is described from the head, body and fins of the northern pipefish, Syngnathus fuscus Storer (Syngnathidae) from the environs of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA. The new species is compared with Gyrodactylus shorti and Gyrodactylus syngnathi, species previously recorded from pipefish in the United States and Norway, respectively. Gyrodactylus pisculentus was frequently associated with mortality of northern pipefish held in quarantine at the Woods Hole Science Aquarium during 2002-2005. The clinical account of the infections and treatment protocols are presented.

Effect of pine bark (Pinus radiata) extracts on sporulation of coccidian oocysts

Abdul Lateef Molan, Zhuojian Liu, Shampa De

Folia Parasitologica 56[1] 1-5 (2009) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2009.001

A series of experiments have been undertaken to determine the effect of water extracts from pine bark (Pinus radiata) on the inhibition of the sporulation of oocysts of three species of avian coccidia. Tubes containing coccidian oocysts isolated from droppings of coccidia-infected chickens were randomly assigned to 0, 250, 500 and 1000 µg/ml pine bark extract (PBE). The tubes were incubated at 25-29 oC for 48 h depending on the species of Eimeria. Sporulation inhibition bioassay was used to evaluate the activity of PBE on the sporulation of coccidian oocysts. The oocysts were gently aerated with an air pump away from sun light....

Gyrodactylus orecchiae sp. n. (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae) from farmed populations of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) in the Adriatic Sea

Giuseppe Paladini, Joanne Cable, Maria L. Fioravanti, Patricia J. Faria, David Di Cave, Andrew P. Shinn

Folia Parasitologica 56[1] 21-28 (2009) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2009.004

Gyrodactylus orecchiae sp. n. (Monogenea, Gyrodactylidae) is described from the skin, fins, eyes and gills of juvenile Sparus aurata L. (gilthead seabream) following two outbreaks of gyrodactylosis amongst stocks held in inshore floating cages on the Adriatic coast of Albania and Croatia. Fish were heavily infected (1000+ gyrodactylids/fish) with G. orecchiae which reportedly resulted in ~2-10% mortality amongst the infected stock. Morphologically, the haptoral hooks of G. orecchiae most closely resemble those of Gyrodactylus arcuatus Bychowsky, 1933 in the approximate shape of the ventral bar with its pronounced...

Kudoa inornata sp. n. (Myxosporea: Multivalvulida) from the skeletal muscles of Cynoscion nebulosus (Teleostei: Sciaenidae)

Iva Dyková, Isaurede Buron, Ivan Fiala, William A. Roumillat

Folia Parasitologica 56[2] 91-98 (2009) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2009.014

A new myxosporean species, Kudoa inornata sp. n. (Myxosporea: Multivalvulida), is described from skeletal muscles of the spotted seatrout Cynoscion nebulosus (Cuvier), collected in estuarine waters along the coast of South Carolina, USA. Light microscopic and ultrastructural characters rank this species to the group of Kudoa species with simple-shaped spores. The uniqueness of the SSU and LSU rDNA sequences justifies its status of a new species with sister relationship to Kudoa paniformis. The 100% prevalence in seatrout from four out of five localities sampled and pathogenicity of K. inornata recognized in this study...

The gyrodactylids collected from the skin, fins and gills of pipefish were subjected to a morphological analysis of the attachment hooks and the morphometric data were compared to the four species of Gyrodactylus previously described from syngnathid hosts, namely G. eyipayipi Vaughan, Christison, Hansen et Shinn, 2010, G. pisculentus Williams,...

The diagnosis of a personality disorder increases the likelihood for seropositivity to Toxoplasma gondii in psychiatric patients

Dunja Hinze-Selch, Walter Däubener, Sükran Erdag, Sibylle Wilms

Folia Parasitologica 57[2] 129-135 (2010) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2010.016

Individuals serologically positive for the chronic infection with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii (TG) display certain personality traits differently from uninfected individuals. Experimental data in mice demonstrate that TG infection modulates behaviour. However, psychiatric patients with a personality disorder have not yet been investigated systematically. In our sample containing 896 psychiatric inpatients with the primary diagnoses of schizophrenia, major depression, schizoaffective or bipolar disorder and 214 psychiatrically unaffected controls (same geographic region, sampled during same time period) we analysed for effects of the additional...

Pattern of money allocation in experimental games supports the stress hypothesis of gender differences in Toxoplasma gondii-induced behavioural changes

Jitka Lindová, Aleš A. Kuběna, Hana Šturcová, Romana Křivohlavá, Martina Novotná, Anna Rubešová, Jan Havlíček, Petr Kodym, Jaroslav Flegr

Folia Parasitologica 57[2] 136-142 (2010) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2010.017

Latent toxoplasmosis has been previously found to cause behavioural and personality changes in humans, which are specific for each gender. Here we tested the stress hypothesis of these gender differences based on the assumption that latent toxoplasmosis causes long-term subliminal stress. In line with this hypothesis, the gender difference will appear specifically in situations with interpersonal context because in contrast to the typical individualistic coping style of men, women have a tendency to express elevated prosocial behaviour under stress. Altogether 295 biology students (29/191 females and 27/104 males infected by T. gondii) played...

Iva Dyková, Martin Kostka, Falk Wortberg, Elisabeth Nardy, Hana Pecková

Folia Parasitologica 57[3] 157-163 (2010) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2010.021

We studied amoebae associated with nodular gill disease (NGD) outbreaks in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) in fish farms in South-Western Germany. Gills of 12 diseased rainbow trout were examined in fresh, by isolation attempts, histologically and using in situ hybridisation (ISH). A total of nine amoeba strains of the genera Acanthamoeba (1), Hartmannella (2), Naegleria (1), Protacanthamoeba (1) and Vannella (4) were isolated and determined using light microscopical, ultrastructural and molecular methods. Specific molecular probes designed from the SSU rDNA sequences of individual amoeba...

Morphological and molecular study of Microphallus primas (Digenea: Microphallidae) metacercaria, infecting the shore crab Carcinus maenas from northern Portugal

Susana Pina, Fernanda Russell-Pinto, Pedro Rodrigues

Folia Parasitologica 58[1] 48-54 (2011) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2011.005

The present study describes the anatomy and surface topography of the metacercaria of Microphallus primas (Jägerskiöld, 1909) infecting the shore crab Carcinus maenas (L.) in Aveiro estuary, northern Portugal. The metacercaria species identification resulted from the combined use of morphological and molecular data, particularly the 28S rDNA gene. The metacercariae encysted preferentially in the host's hepatopancreas and also in the gonads. Isolated cysts were present in two distinct forms, spherical and oval, and were shown to be the identical species by the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) sequence. Chemically excysted metacercariae...

Adji Mama Marigo, Zdzisław Świderski, Cheikh Tidiane Bâ, Jordi Miquel

Folia Parasitologica 58[1] 69-78 (2011) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2011.007

Spermiogenesis and the ultrastructural organisation of the spermatozoon of the trypanorhynch cestode Aporhynchus menezesi Noever, Caira, Kuchta et Desjardins, 2010 are described by means of transmission electron microscopy. Type I spermiogenesis of A. menezesi starts with the formation of a differentiation zone containing two centrioles separated by an intercentriolar body constituted by five electron-dense plates. Each centriole gives rise to a free flagellum, which grows at an angle of 90° in relation to a median cytoplasmic process. The nucleus and cortical microtubules elongate along the spermatid body. Later, both flagella rotate...

A new hyperapolytic species, Trilocularia eberti sp. n. (Cestoda: Tetraphyllidea), from Squalus cf. mitsukurii (Squaliformes: Squalidae) off South Africa with comments on its development and fecundity

Maria Pickering, Janine N. Caira

Folia Parasitologica 59[2] 107-114 (2012) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2012.016

A new species of tetraphyllidean cestode in the genus Trilocularia is described from an undescribed shark species, Squalus cf. mitsukurii, off the coast of South Africa. Trilocularia eberti sp. n. is the second known member of its genus, and like its congener, T. gracilis (Olsson, 1866-1867) Olsson, 1869, is extremely hyperapolytic, dropping proglottids from its strobila while they are still very immature. Characteristic of the genus, it possesses a distinctive scolex with triloculated bothridia, but differs conspicuously from its congener in its possession of an anterior loculus that is much larger in width relative...

Can a specialist parasite species of a widespread and common host species be rare? The case of Spinitectus inermis (Nematoda: Cystidicolidae) in eels Anguilla anguilla

Clive R. Kennedy

Folia Parasitologica 59[2] 131-138 (2012) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2012.018

The claim by many authors that Spinitectus inermis (Zeder, 1800), a narrowly specific parasite of European eels Anguilla anguilla (L.), is a rare species is considered at three levels: its geographical range, its frequency of occurrence compared to other eel parasites and its relative abundance in component communities. The parasite is widely distributed in freshwater throughout the European range of the eel but its occurrence is erratic and unpredictable, being known from only 8 countries. Surveys of eel parasites in the United Kingdom and in Continental Europe show that it is present in only 13% of British and 29% of continental localities....

A new species of the rare endoparasitic copepod Entobius (Copepoda: Entobiidae) from Mexico with a key to the species of the genus

Eduardo Suárez-Morales, Luis F. Carrera-Parra

Folia Parasitologica 59[3] 221-228 (2012)

In a study of the benthic polychaete fauna of the southern Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, several specimens of the terebellid polychaete Scionides reticulata (Ehlers) were found to host endoparasitic copepods that represent an undescribed species of the rare cyclopoid genus Entobius Dogiel, 1948. The new species, E. scionides sp. n., can be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of characters including a genital region without constrictions, three-segmented antennules, a reduced antenna with a blunt terminal process, reduced ornamentation of endopods of legs 1-4 and its relatively small size (2.3-2.7 mm). It is...

Two new feather mite species (Acari, Pteronyssidae) from the white-barred piculet, Picumnus cirratus (Aves, Piciformes)

Fabio Akashi Hernandes

Folia Parasitologica 59[4] 301-307 (2012) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2012.042

Two new species of the feather mite family Pteronyssidae Oudemans, 1941 are described from the white-barred piculet, Picumnus cirratus Temminck from Brazil: Pterotrogus picumni sp. n. and Ramphastobius scutatus sp. n., representing the first mites described from this host. Pterotrogus picumni sp. n. can be readily distinguished from all previous species of the simplex group by having dorsal crest on femora I and II in both sexes. This is the first representative of the genus Pterotrogus Gaud, 1981 recorded on a host of the genus Picumnus Temminck. Ramphastobius scutatus sp. n. is unique among...

Trichinellosis in mice: effect of albendazole on the glutathione transferase in the intestines

Agnieszka Wojtkowiak-Giera, Elżbieta Wandurska-Nowak, Michał Michalak, Monika Derda, Jadwiga Łopaciuch

Folia Parasitologica 59[4] 311-314 (2012) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2012.044

The glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a family of multifunctional enzymes involved in cellular detoxification. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of albendazole - drug of choice for trichinellosis - on the total activity and kinetics of cytosolic GST in the mouse intestines during experimental trichinellosis. Our results showed a statistically significant decrease in the total GST activity both in the small and large intestines of the mice infected with the nematode Trichinella spiralis (Owen, 1835) and treated with albendazole, compared with the control mice that were infected but untreated with the drug. Furthermore, albendazole...

A reinvestigation of spermiogenesis in Amphilina foliacea (Platyhelminthes: Amphilinidea)

Magdaléna Bruňanská, Larisa G. Poddubnaya, Willi E. R. Xylander

Folia Parasitologica 60[1] 43-50 (2013) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2013.006

Spermiogenesis in the amphilinidean cestode Amphilina foliacea (Rudolphi, 1819) was examined using transmission electron microscopy. The orthogonal development of the two flagella is followed by a flagellar rotation and their proximodistal fusion with the median cytoplasmic process. This process is accompanied by extension of both the mitochondrion and nucleus into the median cytoplasmic process. The two pairs of electron-dense attachment zones mark the lines where the proximodistal fusion of the median cytoplasmic process with the two flagella takes place. The intercentriolar body, previously undetermined in A. foliacea, is composed...

DNA-barcoding contradicts morphology in quill mite species Torotrogla merulae and T. rubeculi (Prostigmata: Syringophilidae)

Eliza Glowska, Anna Dragun-Damian, Jacek Dabert

Folia Parasitologica 60[1] 51-60 (2013) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2013.007

Torotrogla merulae Skoracki, Dabert et Ehrnsberger, 2000 and T. rubeculi Skoracki, 2004 have been considered as distinct steno- and monoxenous quill mite species (Acari: Prostigmata: Syringophilidae) parasitizing the thrushes of the genus Turdus Linnaeus and the European robin Erithacus rubecula (Linnaeus), respectively. Morphological and molecular studies on the taxonomical status of these two species provided contradictory results. Well defined differences in morphology were not supported by substantial genetic distance in nucleotide sequences of the DNA barcode (mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, COI, and...

Abstract: Here, we present the ITS ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequence data on 330 larvae of nematodes of the genus Anisakis Dujardin, 1845 collected from 26 different bony fish species from 21 sampling locations and different climatic zones. New host records are provided for Anisakis simplex (Rudolphi, 1809) sensu stricto (s.s.) and A. pegreffii Campana-Rouget et Biocca, 1955 from Anoplopoma fimbria (Pallas) (Santa Barbara, East Pacific), A. typica (Diesing, 1860) from Caesio cuning (Bloch), Lepturacanthus savala (Cuvier) and Katsuwonus pelamis (Linnaeus) (Indonesia, West Pacific), A. simplex...

Abstract: This report addresses the possible impacts of local habitat characteristics on the metacercariae of Clinostomum schizothoraxi Kaw, 1950 infecting crucian carp, Carassius carassius (Linnaeus), from three lakes in Kashmir. The lakes chosen encompass an extremely wide gradient in trophic status - Manasbal (less polluted and mesotrophic), Dal (moderately polluted and eutrophic) and Anchar (strongly polluted and hypertrophic). The results indicate that infrapopulation-level descriptors of abundance of C. schizothoraxi in fish differed between the three lakes and revealed that the infection levels were greater at...

A review of picobiine mites (Acari: Syringophilidae: Picobiinae) parasitising African birds

Folia Parasitologica 60[3] 192-212 (2013) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2013.022

Abstract: A fauna of quill mites of the subfamily Picobiinae (Acari: Syringophilidae) associated with African birds is revised. Two new monotypic genera are proposed, Gunabopicobia gen. n. for Picobia zumpti Lawrence, 1959 and Lawrencipicobia gen. n. for Picobia poicephali Skoracki et Dabert, 2002. These new genera differ from other genera of the subfamily by the following features: in females of Gunabopicobia, propodonotal setae vi are situated anterior to the level of setae ve; the narrow lateral propodonotal shields bear bases of setae vi, ve, si and se; the bases of setae...
