Morphological and molecular studies of Eudiplozoon nipponicum (Goto, 1891) and Eudiplozoon kamegaii sp. n. (Monogenea; Diplozoidae)

Tomoki Nishihira, Misako Urabe

Folia Parasitologica 67:018 (2020) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2020.018

Eudiplozoon nipponicum (Goto, 1891) Khotenovsky, 1985 (Monogenea: Diplozoidae), is known to parasitise Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus and species of Carassius. In this study, we conducted a taxonomic re-examination of E. nipponicum using genetic analysis and morphological comparisons from different host species from a single water system. rDNA nucleotide sequences of the internal transcription spacer 2 (ITS-2) region (645 bp) showed interspecific-level genetic differences among diplozoids from species of Carassius and C. carpio (p-distance: 3.1-4.0%) but no difference among those from different species of Carassius...

Identification and subcellular localisation of hexokinase-2 in Nosema bombycis

Jiancheng Sun, Feng Zhu, Hongli Chen, Mingshuai Yao, Guanyu Zhu, Yiling Zhang, Qiang Wang, Zhongyuan Shen

Folia Parasitologica 67:023 (2020) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2020.023

Hexokinase (HXK) is the first key enzyme in the glycolytic pathway and plays an extremely important role in energy metabolism. By searching the microsporidian database, we found a sequence (NBO_27g0008) of Nosema bombycis Nägali, 1857 with high similarity to hexokinase-2, and named it as NbHXK2. The NbHXK2 gene has 894 bp and encodes 297 amino acids with 34.241 kD molecular weight and 5.26 isoelectric point. NbHXK2 contains 31 phosphorylation sites and 4 potential N-glycosylation sites with signal peptides and no transmembrane domain. Multiple sequence alignment showed that NbHXK2 shares more than 40% amino acid identity with that of...

Bárbara Cavaleiro, Joana Serrão, Sara Nogueira, Liliana Ribeiro, Margarida Hermida, Cristina Cruz, Martina Lisnerová, Ivan Fiala, Aurélia Saraiva

Folia Parasitologica 68:003 (2021) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2021.003

Myxozoan parasites of the genus Kudoa Meglitsch, 1947 are associated with post-mortem tissue degradation that causes great financial losses to commercial fisheries. Kudoa thyrsites (Gilchrist, 1924) is a species with a very wide host range including commercial tunas, mackerels, salmonids and flatfishes. A sample of 190 fishes of 18 species from the Madeira Archipelago and 30 Atlantic chub mackerel, Scomber colias Gmelin, and 30 blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou (Risso), from the Portuguese mainland coast were examined for the presence of species of Kudoa. The prevalence of Kudoa spp. was...

Three new species of 'tetraphyllidean' cestodes from an undescribed bamboo shark (Orectolobiformes: Hemiscylliidae) in Sri Lanka

Janine N. Caira, Kyle Otto, Daniel Fernando, Kirsten Jensen

Folia Parasitologica 68:004 (2021) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2021.004

Examination of seven specimens of an undescribed species of bamboo shark (Orectolobiformes: Hemiscylliidae), currently referred to as Chiloscyllium sp. 1, from Sri Lanka yielded three new species of 'tetraphyllidean' cestodes, one each in the genera Carpobothrium Shipley et Hornell, 1906, Spiniloculus Southwell, 1925, and Yorkeria Southwell, 1927. Carpobothrium marjorieae Caira, Otto et Jensen sp. n. differs from its three valid congeners in total length, number of testes, and size of the apical sucker of its anterior bothridial flap. Like Carpobothrium eleanorae Koontz et Caira, 2016 it possesses spherical...

How monoxenous trypanosomatids revealed hidden feeding habits of their tsetse fly hosts

Jan Votýpka, Klára J. Petrželková, Jana Brzoňová, Milan Jirků, David Modrý, Julius Lukeš

Folia Parasitologica 68:019 (2021) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2021.019

Tsetse flies are well-known vectors of trypanosomes pathogenic for humans and livestock. For these strictly blood-feeding viviparous flies, the host blood should be the only source of nutrients and liquids, as well as any exogenous microorganisms colonising their intestine. Here we describe the unexpected finding of several monoxenous trypanosomatids in their gut. In a total of 564 individually examined Glossina (Austenia) tabaniformis (Westwood) (436 specimens) and Glossina (Nemorhina) fuscipes fuscipes (Newstead) (128 specimens) captured in the Dzanga-Sangha Protected Areas, Central African Republic,...

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection from water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) in northeastern and southern Thailand

Tawin Inpankaew, Thi Thuy Nguyen, Burin Nimsuphan, Chanya Kengradomkij, Ketsarin Kamyingkird, Wissanuwat Chimnoi, Boy Boonaue, Xuenan Xuan

Folia Parasitologica 68:028 (2021) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2021.028

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease resulting from infection with the apicomplexan Toxoplasma gondii (Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908), one of the world's most common parasites in warm-blooded animals, including humans. Sources of infection can be exposed to infected cat faeces, mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, and notably, the consumption of undercooked contaminated meat of intermediate hosts. In Thailand, water buffaloes are highly valued for rice cultivation, traditional culture and meat production. Like several other mammalian species, these animals play a role as reservoirs of T. gondii, thus representing a threat to human...

Mitochondrial genome of Rhipicephalus cf. camicasi Morel, Mouchet et Rodhain, 1976 from a camel (Camelus dromedarius Linnaeus) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Shona Chandra, Abdullah D. Alanazi, Jan Šlapeta

Folia Parasitologica 69:005 (2022) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2022.005

Rhipicephalus camicasi Morel, Mouchet et Rodhain, 1976 is thought to be distributed across Africa, Arabian Peninsula and the Mediterranean region. It belongs to the Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille, 1806) species complex. Mitochondrial genome sequences are becoming frequently used for the identification and differentiation of tick species. In the present study, the entire mitochondrial genome of R. cf. camicasi (~15 kb) collected from a camel in Saudi Arabia was sequenced and compared with mitogenomes of two species of Rhipicephalus Koch, 1844. The mitochondrial genome is 87.8% and 91.7% identical...

Intraspecific morphological variation in myxosporeans: high pleomorphic myxospores in the same plasmodium of Myxobolus drjagini (Akhmerov, 1954)

Yang Liu, Jiayun Yao, Xin Yao, Kaijie Zhang, Qingyong Wang, Xiaoyi Pan, Jinyong Zhang

Folia Parasitologica 69:006 (2022) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2022.006

The taxonomy of myxosporeans was traditionally dependent solely upon the spore morphological and morphometric data. Intensive reports of intraspecific morphological variation, however, are increasingly challenging the taxonomic approaches for myxosporeans. In the present work, the morphological pleomorphism of myxospores of Myxobolus drjagini (Akhmerov, 1954) was observed. More interestingly, all of these pleomorphic myxospores occurred in the same plasmodium of M. drjagini, which refutes the previous hypothesis that morphological variation of M. drjagini was derived from its responses to differences in nutrition and immunological...

Role of bank vole (Myodes glareolus) personality on tick burden (Ixodes spp.)

Grégoire Perez

Folia Parasitologica 69:014 (2022) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2022.014

Parasitism among individuals in a population often varies more than expected by chance only, leading to parasite aggregation, which is a parameter of paramount importance in parasite population dynamics and particularly in vector-borne epidemiology. However, the origin of this phenomenon is yet not fully elucidated. An increasing body of literature has demonstrated that individuals vary consistently in their behaviour, which is referred to as animal personality. Such behavioural variation could potentially lead to different encounter rates with parasites. To test this hypothesis, the relationship between personality and burden with ticks (Ixodes...

Voitto Haukisalmi, Alexis Ribas, Jean-Pierre Hugot, Serge Morand, Kittipong Chaisiri, Kerstin Junker, Sonja Matthee, Andrea Spickett, Jukka T. Lehtonen, Carlos Feliu, Heikki Henttonen

Folia Parasitologica 71:011 (2024) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2024.011

The present study aims at clarifying the poorly known phylogenetic relationships and systematics of cestodes of the family Davaineidae Braun, 1900 (Cyclophyllidea), primarily the genus Raillietina Fuhrmann, 1920 and of the subfamily Inermicapsiferinae (Anoplocephalidae) from mammals (mostly rodents, 31 new isolates) and birds (eight new isolates). Phylogenetic analyses are based on sequences of the large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (28S) and mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 gene (nad1). The main phylogenetic pattern emerging from the present analysis is the presence of three independent lineages within the main clade of the subfamily...

Three new species of Ophiotaenia La Rue, 1911 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) from dipsadine snakes (Squamata: Colubridae) in Ecuador

Alain de Chambrier, Roman Kuchta, Tomáš Scholz

Folia Parasitologica 71:020 (2024) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2024.020

The parasite fauna of Neotropical reptiles is poorly known, and the number of parasites described in these hosts does not seem to correspond to the actual species diversity in this zoogeographical region. This also applies to tapeworms such as proteocephalids, which are rarely found in reptiles and are strictly specific to their reptilian hosts. In the present paper, three new species of Ophiotaenia La Rue, 1911 are described from three dipsadine snake species (Squamata: Colubridae) in Ecuador, namely O. jeanmarctouzeti sp. n. from the Neotropical blunt-headed treesnake Imantodes cenchoa (Linnaeus), O. barraganae sp. n....

Phylogenetic analysis of Trypanosomatina (Protozoa: Kinetoplastida) based on minicircle conserved regions

Vyacheslav Yurchenko, Alexander A. Kolesnikov, Julius Lukeš

Folia Parasitologica 47[1] 1-5 (2000) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2000.001

Phylogenetic relationships within the suborder Trypanosomatina were inferred from the kinetoplast DNA minicircle conserved region sequences. Trees built using distance-matrix (Neighbor-Joining) and maximum parsimony methods showed that the minicircle conserved regions (CRs) provide a sensitive and specific molecular marker suitable for phylogenetic analyses of subspecies and strains of trypanosomatid flagellates, as testified by the subdivision of the genus Leishmania into the subgenera Leishmania, Viannia and Sauroleishmania. However, since Phytomonas and monogenetic parasites of insects represent the earliest diverging...

The effect of condensed tannins from seven herbages on Trichostrongylus colubriformis larval migration in vitro

Abdul L. Molan, Garry C. Waghorn, Beyng R. Min, Warren C. McNabb

Folia Parasitologica 47[1] 39-44 (2000) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2000.007

The effects of condensed tannins (CT) extracted from seven forages on the motility of the economically important nematode, Trichostrongylus colubriformis (Giles, 1892), were evaluated by using a larval migration inhibition (LMI) assay. The assay involved incubation of third stage (L3) exsheathed T. colubriformis larvae with CT extracted from Lotus pedunculatus, Lotus corniculatus, sulla (Hedysarum coronarium), sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia), Dorycnium rectum, Dorycnium pentaphyllum and dock (Rumex obtusifolius) and measurement of larval migration through nylon mesh with a 20µm...

Huffmanela paronai sp. n. (Nematoda: Trichosomoididae), a new parasite from the skin of swordfish Xiphias gladius in the Ligurian Sea (Western Mediterranean)

František Moravec, Fulvio Garibaldi

Folia Parasitologica 47[4] 309-313 (2000) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2000.053

A new species of trichosomoidid nematode, Huffmanela paronai sp. n., is established on the basis of its egg morphology and biological characters. The dark-shelled, embryonated eggs of this histozoic parasite occur in masses in the epidermis of the swordfish Xiphias gladius L. (Xiphiidae, Perciformes) from the Ligurian Sea in northern Italy. The eggs are concentrated in groups appearing as black spots in the skin of the fish host, being distributed mainly on the lower part of its body (lower jaw, gill covers, pectoral, anal and caudal fins, lower half of body). The parasite's eggs are characterised mainly by their shape and markedly small...

Experimental infection of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) with marine Eubothrium sp. (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea): observations on the life cycle, aspects of development and growth of the parasite

Monica Saksvik, Are Nylund, Frank Nilsen, Kjartan Hodneland

Folia Parasitologica 48[2] 118-126 (2001) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2001.018

The life cycle of marine Eubothrium sp. (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea), from Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) was experimentally completed in one year and included only one intermediate host (Acartia tonsa Dana) (Copepoda: Calanoida). Adult cestodes were collected from farmed salmon, and ripe eggs released by the cestodes were fed to Acartia tonsa. Ingested eggs hatched in the gut and the larvae developed in the haemocoel of the copepod for 15 days at 16°C. A total of 170 seawater-reared salmon were exposed to infected copepods and the total prevalence of Eubothrium sp. in the salmon after infection was 95.3%, with a...

Egg shell ultrastructure of the fish nematode Huffmanela huffmani (Trichosomoididae)

Zdeňka Žďárská, David G. Huffman, František Moravec, Jana Nebesářová

Folia Parasitologica 48[3] 231-234 (2001) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2001.038

The egg shell of Huffmanela huffmani Moravec, 1987 forms three main layers: an outer vitelline layer, a middle chitinous layer, and an inner lipid layer. The vitelline layer, forming the superficial projections of the egg shell, comprises two parts: an outer electron-dense, and an inner electron-lucid part. The chitinous layer is differentiated into three parts: an outer homogenous electron-dense part, a lamellated part, and an inner electron-dense net-like part. The lipid layer comprises an outer net-like electron-lucid part, and an inner homogenous electron-lucid part. The polar plugs are formed by electron-lucid material with fine electron-dense...

Nymphal diapause and its photoperiodic control in the tick Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae)

Valentin N. Belozerov, Rudolf L. Naumov

Folia Parasitologica 49[4] 314-318 (2002) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2002.058

It is shown experimentally that the option between developmental diapause and non-diapause development in nymphs of Ixodes scapularis Say, 1821 (Middle Atlantic population) is determined by photoperiodic conditions according to a two-step photoperiodic reaction of short-day long-day type. Diapause arrest of development is induced by an impact of either long day upon unfed nymphs, or short day upon engorged nymphs, while non-diapause development completed in 2-2.5 months at 20°C needs the change from short-day to long-day conditions. Some ecophysiological aspects of mechanisms controlling seasonal development of ticks belonging to Ixodes ricinus...

Activity levels and predator detection by amphipods infected with an acanthocephalan parasite, Pomphorhynchus laevis

Bahram S. Dezfuli, Barbara J. Maynard, Todd A. Wellnitz

Folia Parasitologica 50[2] 129-134 (2003) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2003.023

The acanthocephalan parasite Pomphorhynchus laevis (Müller, 1776) uses freshwater amphipods as its intermediate host. In order to complete the life cycle, the infected amphipod must be consumed by a fish, where the acanthocephalan will mature and reproduce. Parasite transmission, and therefore fitness, could be enhanced if infected amphipods fail to detect or avoid predatory fish. We compared the activity levels of infected and non-infected amphipods, Echinogammarus stammeri (Karaman, 1931), in both the presence and absence of odours from its natural, definitive host, the fish Leuciscus cephalus (L.). Throughout the experiment,...

Leishmania tropica (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) - a perplexing parasite

Raymond L. Jacobson

Folia Parasitologica 50[4] 241-250 (2003) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2003.042

Leishmania tropica is one of the causative agents of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), a disfiguring parasitic disease that recently was found to be viscerotropic. In urban areas it is transmitted from infected individuals by the bite of phlebotomine sand flies to naïve persons (anthroponotic CL). In rural areas animals are thought to be the reservoir, but the full life cycle is still under investigation (zoonotic CL). For many years L. tropica was either confused or merely grouped with L. major while Phlebotomus sergenti was the only proven vector. In recent years new foci have erupted, but few have been investigated....

Matt Longshaw, Paul Frear, Stephen W. Feist

Folia Parasitologica 50[4] 251-262 (2003) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2003.043

Myxobolus buckei sp. n. is described from the spinal column of Leuciscus cephalus (L.), Rutilus rutilus (L.) and Abramis brama (L.) from freshwater rivers in the North of England. The plasmodia develop within the remnants of the embryonic notochord in the intervertebral spaces. The spores are large, measuring (in µm) 14.0 ± 0.7 × 11.5 ± 0.6 (mean ± SD), smooth, round to ellipsoid in valvular view with several sutural edge markings. The polar capsules are pyriform and of equal size, measuring 7.5 ± 0.5 × 4.2 ± 0.2 (mean ± SD), with 11-12 turns of the polar filament arranged...

Advances in the knowledge of amphizoic amoebae infecting fish

Iva Dyková, Jiří Lom

Folia Parasitologica 51[2/3] 81-97 (2004) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2004.014

Free-living amoebae infecting freshwater and marine fish include those described thus far as agents of fish diseases, associated with other disease conditions and isolated from organs of asymptomatic fish. This survey is based on information from the literature as well as on our own data on strains isolated from freshwater and marine fish. Evidence is provided for diverse fish-infecting amphizoic amoebae. Recent progress in the understanding of the biology of Neoparamoeba spp., agents responsible for significant direct losses in Atlantic salmon and turbot industry, is presented. Specific requirements of diagnostic procedures detecting amoebic...

A review of Dendromonocotyle (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) from the skin of stingrays and their control in public aquaria

Leslie A. Chisholm, Ian D. Whittington, Andreas B.P. Fischer

Folia Parasitologica 51[2/3] 123-130 (2004) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2004.017

Dendromonocotyle species (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) are the only monocotylids to parasitize the skin of chondrichthyan hosts. Currently 11 species are recorded from the skin of ray species in the Dasyatidae, Myliobatidae and Urolophidae. There have been increasing reports of Dendromonocotyle outbreaks on rays kept in public aquaria. This paper provides a broad review of Dendromonocotyle that should assist taxonomists and aquarists with species identification and help decisions on potential control methods for Dendromonocotyle infections. The taxonomy and host-specificity of Dendromonocotyle are discussed and a key...

Larvae of gryporhynchid cestodes (Cyclophyllidea) from fish: a review

Tomáš Scholz, Rodney A. Bray, Roman Kuchta, Radmila Řepová

Folia Parasitologica 51[2/3] 131-152 (2004) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2004.018

Larvae (metacestodes) of tapeworms of the cyclophyllidean family Gryporhynchidae (previously included in the Dilepididae) occur in different internal organs of fresh- and brackish water fish (110 fish species of 27 families in 12 orders reported), which serve as the second intermediate hosts. The species composition, spectrum of fish hosts, sites of infection, and geographical distribution of gryporhynchids recorded from fish are reviewed here on the basis of literary data and examination of extensive material from helminthological collections. Metacestodes of the following genera have been found in fish: Amirthalingamia Bray, 1974 (1 species),...

Redescription of Eubothrium fragile (Rudolphi, 1802) and E. rugosum (Batsch, 1786) (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea), parasites of fish in the Holarctic Region

Roman Kuchta, Vladimíra Hanzelová, Andy P. Shinn, Larisa G. Poddubnaya, Tomáš Scholz

Folia Parasitologica 52[3] 251-260 (2005) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2005.033

Two fish cestodes, the little-known Eubothrium fragile (Rudolphi, 1802) and E. rugosum (Batsch, 1786), the type species of the genus Eubothrium Nybelin, 1922, are redescribed on the basis of new material from twaite shad, Alosa fallax (Lacépède, 1803), from England and burbot, Lota lota (Linnaeus, 1758), from Russia, respectively. The tapeworms are compared with two other species of the genus, E. crassum (Bloch, 1779) and E. salvelini (Schrank, 1790), common parasites of salmonid fish in the Holarctic. The most notable differential characters are the size and the shape of the scolex (smaller and...

Folia Parasitologica 53[1] 63-70 (2006) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2006.006

Two new nematode species of Philometra Costa, 1845, P. carolinensis sp. n. and P. cynoscionis sp. n., are described from the spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus (Cuvier) (Sciaenidae, Perciformes) in estuaries on the Atlantic coast of South Carolina, USA. Philometra carolinensis (males and gravid and subgravid females) parasitic in the host's ovary is most similar to P. lateolabracis (Yamaguti, 1935) in female morphology, but distinctly differs from it in possessing conspicuously short spicules (81-87 µm long) with heavily sclerotized distal parts, the gubernaculum bearing a reflected dorsal barb, and...

Camallanus cotti (Nematoda: Camallanidae), an introduced parasite of fishes in New Caledonia

František Moravec, Jean-Lou Justine

Folia Parasitologica 53[4] 287-296 (2006) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2006.035

A pathogenic Asian nematode species of Camallanus, C. cotti Fujita, 1927, was found in New Caledonia, South Pacific, for the first time; it was recorded from two native fishes, Awaous guamensis (Valenciennes) (Gobiidae) (prevalence 51%, intensity 1-25) and Kuhlia marginata (Cuvier) (Kuhliidae) (a single specimen found), of the La Foa River, about 100 km north of Nouméa; the latter represents a new host record. Morphological data on C. cotti based on New Caledonian specimens and those previously collected from aquarium-kept Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (Cantor) in Canada have been provided. The SEM examination...

Five new species of Pseudorhabdosynochus (Monogenea: Diplectanidae) from the gills of Epinephelus costae (Teleostei: Serranidae)

Folia Parasitologica 54[2] 117-128 (2007) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2007.017

A survey of the gill parasites of Epinephelus costae (Teleostei: Serranidae) was conducted between 2001 and 2005 in the Gulf of Gabès (Tunisia). Five new species of Diplectanidae (Monogenea) were collected, all belonging to Pseudorhabdosynochus Yamaguti, 1958: P. bouaini sp. n., P. dolicocolpos sp. n., P. enitsuji sp. n., P. sinediscus sp. n., and P. sosia sp. n. These five species differ from each other and from all described species of Pseudorhabdosynochus by the morphology and size of their sclerotized vagina. These diplectanids (except P. sinediscus) were also collected from...
