Leslie A. Chisholm, Ian D. Whittington, Graham C. Kearn

Folia Parasitologica 48[1] 15-20 (2001) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2001.004

Dendromonocotyle colorni sp. n. (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) is described from the dorsal skin surface of two specimens of Himantura uarnak (Forsskål) kept at the Eilat Underwater Observatory in Israel. Dendromonocotyle colorni is distinguished from the other eight species in the genus by the morphology of the terminal papillar sclerite on the haptor, the distal portion of the male copulatory organ and the morphology of the vagina. The development of the male copulatory organ is detailed for D. colorni and the adaptations of species of Dendromonocotyle to life on the dorsal skin surface of rays are discussed....

New thiadiazine derivatives with activity against Trypanosoma cruzi amastigotes

Susana Muelas, Rossanna Di Maio, Hugo Cerecetto, Gustavo Seoane, Carmen Ochoa, José Antonio Escario, Alicia Gómez-Barrio

Folia Parasitologica 48[2] 105-108 (2001) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2001.015

The cytotoxicity of 18 new 1,2,6-thiadiazin-3,5-dione 1,1-dioxides was evaluated. This group of products was previously assayed against epimastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi and some of them showed a high antiprotozoal activity. Thereafter 13 compounds with a high anti-epimastigote activity and low cytotoxicity were selected to be assayed against amastigotes. Some of the products showed the same or even lower cytotoxicity than nifurtimox and benznidazole, but most of them were very toxic for macrophages at 100 µg/ml. Only one of the compounds had an anti-amastigote activity similar to that of reference drugs at 10 µg/ml, but unfortunately...

Composition and structure of helminth communities in two populations of Pipistrellus pipistrellus (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) from Spain

J. Guillermo Esteban, Blanca Amengual, Jordi Serra Cobo

Folia Parasitologica 48[2] 143-148 (2001) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2001.022

The community composition and structure of helminths of Pipistrellus pipistrellus (Schreber, 1774) from two widely separated Spanish localities, El Saler (n = 42) and the San Pedro pothole (n = 34), were determined and compared. Five species of trematodes, Plagiorchis (Plagiorchis) sp., Lecithodendrium (Lecithodendrium) linstowi Dollfus, 1931, Prosthodendrium (Prosthodendrium) sp., Pycnoporus heteroporus (Dujardin, 1845) and Parabascus semisquamosus (Braun, 1900), and one species of cestode, Hymenolepis pipistrelli López-Neyra, 1941, were found. The two bat populations harboured...

Ultrastructure of spermiogenesis and spermatozoa of Discocotyle sagittata (Monogenea: Polyopisthocotylea: Discocotylinea)

Joanne Cable, Richard C. Tinsley

Folia Parasitologica 48[3] 209-216 (2001) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2001.034

Ultrastructural analysis revealed that the spermatozoon of Discocotyle sagittata (Leuckart, 1842) is composed of two parallel axonemes, mitochondrion, nucleus and cortical microtubules. The nucleus, which occupies a central/distal position and has an unusual crescent-shaped profile, is slightly shorter than the mitochondrial rod. The two axonemes, which are of unequal length, and the cortical microtubules (up to 68 forming a continuous ring in the principal region) extend almost the entire length of the spermatozoon. A fold of the plasma membrane creates a unilateral flange or undulating membrane. Epifluorescence microscopy indicated that spermatogenesis...

Jiří Salát, Pavlína Braunfuchsová, Jan Kopecký

Folia Parasitologica 48[4] 249-254 (2001) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2001.041

An experimental infection with the microsporidian Encephalitozoon cuniculi Levaditi, Nicolau et Schoen, 1923 was studied using a model of immunocompetent BALB/c mice and immunodeficient SCID mice. The course of infection after intraperitoneal inoculation of E. cuniculi spores was evaluated using the presence of spores in peritoneal macrophages as a criterion. First significant decrease in the proportion of infected cells was recorded on day 9 post infection (p.i.) in BALB/c mice. From day 14 p.i. no spores were observed in macrophages from BALB/c mice, while the number of infected macrophages from SCID mice increased until the death of...

Haemogregarines of the genus Hepatozoon (Apicomplexa: Adeleina) in rodents from northern Europe

Juha Laakkonen, Antti Sukura, Antti Oksanen, Heikki Henttonen, Timo Soveri

Folia Parasitologica 48[4] 263-267 (2001) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2001.043

We studied the prevalence and distribution of Hepatozoon infections in small rodents from Finland and other areas in northern Europe. Hepatozoon infections were more common in voles (Arvicolinae) than mice (Murinae) and more prevalent in voles of the genus Clethrionomys than in voles of the genus Microtus. Transmission electron microscopical examination of Hepatozoon erhardovae Krampitz, 1964 from bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus (Schreber) showed that intracellular lung meronts were located in alveolar septa. Meronts consisted of varying numbers of merozoites packed with amylopectin vacuoles inside electron-lucent...

The status of the Diplosentidae (Acanthocephala: Palaeacanthocephala) and a new family of acanthocephalans from Australian wrasses (Pisces: Labridae)

Sylvie Pichelin, Thomas H. Cribb

Folia Parasitologica 48[4] 289-303 (2001) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2001.047

The status and composition of the Diplosentidae Tubangui et Masiluñgan, 1937 are reviewed. The type species of the type genus, Diplosentis amphacanthi Tubangui et Masiluñgan, 1937 from Siganus canaliculatus (Park, 1797) in the Philippines, is concluded to have been described inaccurately in supposedly possessing only two cement glands and lemnisci enclosed in a membranous sac. The species is almost certainly very close to species of Neorhadinorhynchus Yamaguti, 1939 and Sclerocollum Schmidt et Paperna, 1978 which have also been reported from siganids from the tropical Indo-Pacific. Species of these genera have...

Development of Spinitectus inermis (Nematoda: Cystidicolidae), a parasite of eel, Anguilla anguilla, in Europe

Aurélia Saraiva, František Moravec, Anabela Pereira, Cristina Cruz

Folia Parasitologica 49[2] 118-126 (2002) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2002.022

The development of the nematode Spinitectus inermis (Zeder, 1800), a parasite of the stomach of eels, Anguilla anguilla (L.) in Europe, was experimentally studied. Mayfly nymphs Caenis macrura, Ecdyonurus dispar, Heptagenia sulphurea, Potamanthus luteus and Seratella ignita from Portugal and the Czech Republic were found to serve as experimental intermediate hosts. After ingestion of the nematode eggs by the mayfly nymphs, the toothed first-stage larvae were released and penetrated into the body cavity of the intermediate host. There they moulted twice (on day 4 and 6 post infection [p.i.] at water temperatures...

Jitka Pechová, Gabriela Štěpánová, Lubomír Kovář, Jan Kopecký

Folia Parasitologica 49[2] 153-159 (2002) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2002.027

Saliva-activated transmission of Borrelia afzelii Canica, Nato, du Merle, Mazie, Baranton et Postic, 1993 was demonstrated using salivary gland extract (SGE) from Ixodes ricinus (L., 1758) ticks and C3H mice. Injection of Borrelia spirochaetes together with SGE increased the level of bacteraemia and accelerated the appearance of bacteria in the urinary bladder, compared with the injection of spirochaetes alone. More I. ricinus nymphs became infected when feeding on mice inoculated with B. afzelii plus SGE. Analysis of cytokines produced by cells of draining lymph nodes from SGE-treated mice showed a suppression of...

Trichodinid ectoparasites (Ciliophora: Peritrichia) of freshwater fishes of the family Anabantidae from the Okavango River and Delta (Botswana)

Linda Basson, Jo G. Van As

Folia Parasitologica 49[3] 169-181 (2002) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2002.032

During parasitological surveys in the Okavango Delta and Panhandle in Botswana, two species of climbing perches belonging to the family Anabantidae were investigated for ectoparasites. The fishes were the blackspot climbing perch, Microctenopoma intermedium (Pellegrin) and the manyspined climbing perch, Ctenopoma multispine Peters. Five trichodinid species were found from the skin, fins and gills of these anabantids. One is a known species, i.e., Trichodina microspina Van As et Basson, 1992, for which a comparative description is provided. Four other species are described as new species using silver impregnation, i.e., Trichodina...

External morphological differences between Crepidostomum farionis and Crepidostomum metoecus (Trematoda: Allocreadiidae), parasites of salmonids, as revealed by SEM

František Moravec

Folia Parasitologica 49[3] 211-217 (2002) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2002.037

Scanning electron microscopy examinations of trematode specimens belonging to Crepidostomum farionis (O.F. Müller, 1784) and C. metoecus Braun, 1900, collected from brown trout, Salmo trutta fario L., in the Czech Republic, made it possible to study their surface morphology including details not described previously. The tegument of both species bears numerous characteristic papillae around the oral sucker (in C. metoecus also around the ventral sucker) and the ventral and dorsal surfaces of the forebody, exhibiting a high degree of variability in numbers and arrangement, with tegumental bosses forming lateral fields on...

Post-embryonic development of Camallanus cotti (Nematoda: Camallanidae), with emphasis on growth of some taxonomically important somatic characters

Arne Levsen, Bjørn Berland

Folia Parasitologica 49[3] 231-238 (2002) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2002.042

In this paper, the quantitative post-embryonic development of the Asian freshwater fish nematode Camallanus cotti Fujita, 1927, is described. Larval and adult morphometrics were obtained by following the parasite's life cycle experimentally using copepods Macrocyclops albidus (Jurine) as intermediate host and guppies Poecilia reticulata (Peters), southern platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther) and paradise fish Macropodus opercularis (L.) as definitive host. Additionally, adult worms were obtained from heavily infected paradise fish imported from Singapore. It is suggested that the gradual change in proportions...

A new cystidicolid nematode, Moravecnema segonzaci gen. et sp. n. is described from the intestine of the teleost fish Pachycara thermophilum Geistdoerfer (Zoarcidae) from the hydrothermal sites Logatchev and Snake Pit-Moose of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, at depths of 3,008; 3,492, and 3,510 m. The new genus Moravecnema is characterised by a dorsoventrally elongated oral opening, rudimentary pseudolabia, and four pairs of precloacal and six pairs of postcloacal caudal papillae in the male. The species has two spicules of unequal length, about 330 and 80 µm long. Males are about 5 mm and females about 5-10 mm long. Eggs have long...

Infection in the fins of the goldfish Carassius auratus caused by Myxobolus diversus (Myxosporea)

Kálmán Molnár, Csaba Székely

Folia Parasitologica 50[1] 31-36 (2003) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2003.005

During health surveys of 7- to 9-week-old goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) fingerlings in a fish farm near Budapest, Hungary, myxosporean plasmodia were observed on the fins. Plasmodia were most frequently found at the intersegmental joints of the finrays. Spores of Myxobolus diversus Nie et Li, 1973 known from China, were detectable in the mature plasmodia located within the lumen, and less often on the surface, of the cartilaginous finrays. The external wall of the plasmodia was constituted by a capsule formed from a collagenous material identical with the cartilaginous substance of the finrays. Matured plasmodia were filled by spores...

Component population study of Acanthocephalus tumescens (Acanthocephala) in fishes from Lake Moreno, Argentina

Carlos A. Rauque, Gustavo P. Viozzi, Liliana G. Semenas

Folia Parasitologica 50[1] 72-78 (2003) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2003.013

Seasonal samples of all fish species from Lake Moreno were taken in order to determine the presence of paratenia, to evaluate the status of the hosts and to characterise the transmission of Acanthocephalus tumescens (von Linstow, 1896) at the component population level. Prevalence, mean abundance, mean intensity, numbers of gravid females, relative abundance of the different fish species, relative output of eggs and relative flow rates for each host species were computed. Acanthocephalus tumescens showed low host specificity, successfully parasitizing six out of eight fish species present in the lake. No paratenic infection was registered....

Larisa G. Poddubnaya, John S. Mackiewicz, Boris I. Kuperman

Folia Parasitologica 50[4] 275-292 (2003) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2003.047

Ultrastructural characteristics of progenetic and monoxenic Archigetes sieboldi Leuckart, 1878 from the oligochaete Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Claparède are described. Our observations demonstrate that progenetic Archigetes sieboldi shares characteristics of both larval (progenetic) and adult stages. The primary larval characteristics are: the presence of a cercomer; a surface filamentous coat covering the whole worm; the presence of the penetration glands and the absence of tegumental ones; wide sarcoplasmic processes connecting the circular and longitudinal external tegumental muscles; the absence of the dense homogenous...

Morphology and ultrastructure of Sphaeromyxa noblei sp. n. (Myxozoa), parasite of Heteroclinus whiteleggii (Pisces) from Australian New South Wales coast

Jiří Lom

Folia Parasitologica 51[1] 19-26 (2004) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2004.003

A new species, Sphaeromyxa noblei sp. n., is described from Heteroclinus whiteleggii (Perciformes: Clinidae), a marine fish from the coast of New South Wales in Australia. This raises the number of Sphaeromyxa species to 38; their list is presented. The species is characterised by a layer of branched glycostyles, which is about 2.4 µm thick and is a feature rather unique in Myxosporea. Pansporoblasts form one or two spores. The study of ultrastructure of this species and of those described to date result in recognition of a combination of patterns characterising the genus: plasmodia have marked surface projections, the endoplasm...

Valentina V. Nefedova, Edward I. Korenberg, Nataliya B. Gorelova, Yury V. Kovalevskii

Folia Parasitologica 51[1] 67-71 (2004) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2004.010

The possibility of vertical transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes persulcatus Schulze, 1930 ticks was studied in the progeny of 20 females collected from the vegetation in an active focus of ixodid tick-borne borrelioses (ITBB) located in the Perm oblast, Russia, where Borrelia garinii and B. afzelii are circulating. The presence of Borrelia DNA was detected by the PCR method after feeding and egg laying in 16 engorged females (80.0%), as well as in 36.5 ± 7.2% samples containing 20 eggs each and in 21.4 ± 4.2% samples containing 10 eggs each. The respective rates of individual egg infection...

A microsporidian parasite of the genus Spraguea in the nervous tissues of the Japanese anglerfish Lophius litulon

Mark A. Freeman, Hiroshi Yokoyama, Kazuo Ogawa

Folia Parasitologica 51[2/3] 167-176 (2004) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2004.020

In the present study, a high percentage of Japanese anglerfish, Lophius litulon (Jordan, 1902), contained a microsporidian infection of the nervous tissues. Xenomas were removed and prepared for standard wax histology and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). DNA extractions were performed on parasite spores and used in PCR and sequencing reactions. Fresh spores measured 3.4 × 1.8 µm and were uniform in size with no dimorphism observed. TEM confirmed that only a single developmental cycle and a single spore form were present. Small subunit (SSU) rDNA sequences were >99.5% similar to those of Spraguea lophii (Doflein, 1898)...

The phylogeny of marine and freshwater species of the genus Chloromyxum Mingazzini, 1890 (Myxosporea: Bivalvulida) based on small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences

Ivan Fiala, Iva Dyková

Folia Parasitologica 51[2/3] 211-214 (2004) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2004.025

The small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA) of two freshwater and one marine species of the genus Chloromyxum Mingazzini, 1890 were sequenced. The SSU rDNA trees obtained show the phylogenetic position of the marine species Chloromyxum leydigi Mingazzini, 1890 to be at the base of the freshwater clade, being well supported by a high bootstrap value. Chloromyxum cyprini Fujita, 1927 is closely related to Chloromyxum truttae Léger, 1906 and they represent a sister branch to raabeia sp., Myxidium sp. and Myxidium truttae Léger, 1930. Chloromyxum legeri Tourraine, 1931 is in a position ancestral to Myxidium...

Extensive release of an antigen associated with the sporogonic stages of Myxobolus cerebralis (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) is detected by a heterologous antibody raised to Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Myxozoa: Malacosporea)

David J. Morris, Mansour El-Matbouli, Alexandra Adams

Folia Parasitologica 51[2/3] 215-220 (2004) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2004.026

Monoclonal antibody B4 (mAb B4) was previously developed to the myxozoan parasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae Canning, Curry, Feist, Longshaw et Okamura, 1999, the causative agent of proliferative kidney disease of salmonids. Here we describe the reaction of mAb B4 against Myxobolus cerebralis Hofer, 1903, the parasite that causes 'whirling disease' in salmonids. Tissues examined were collected from experimentally infected rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) and the aquatic oligochaete Tubifex tubifex (O.F. Müller), the two hosts involved in the life cycle of M. cerebralis. Paraffin sections of infected...

Susceptibility of three strains of immunodeficient mice to two related microsporidian species Encephalitozoon cuniculi Levaditi, Nicolau et Schoen, 1923 and Encephalitozoon intestinalis (Cali, Kotler et Orenstein, 1993) was compared. While both, severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) and interferon-gamma knock-out (IFN-γ KO) mice, succumbed to either intraperitoneal (i.p.) or peroral (p.o.) (natural) infection with both parasites, only i.p. infection with E. cuniculi killed interleukin-12 knock-out (IL-12 KO) mice. IFN-γ KO mice died earlier than SCID mice. Adoptive transfer of naive splenocytes from IFN-γ KO...

Fine structure and function of the genital pore of the female of Intoshia variabili (Orthonectida)

George S. Slyusarev

Folia Parasitologica 51[4] 287-290 (2004)

The genital pore of the female of Intoshia variabili Аleksandrov et Sljusarev, 1992 is located on a transverse ring of non-ciliated cells. Before copulation it is occupied by 6-7 cells that develop in the epithelium and that for a time are beneath the surface. When fully developed, these cells contain many electron-dense granules and their apical surface is covered with numerous microvilli. After copulation the granules disappear and the apical surface becomes smooth. The cells still form a plug closing the opening. After one larva pushes the pore cells out and escapes, others follow.

Two new species of Myliocotyle (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) from the gills of Aetomylaeus maculatus and A. nichofii (Elasmobranchii: Myliobatidae) from Sarawak, Borneo, Malaysia

Folia Parasitologica 51[4] 304-310 (2004)

Myliocotyle borneoensis sp. n. and M. multicrista sp. n. (Monocotylidae: Heterocotylinae) are described from the gills of the mottled eagle ray, Aetomylaeus maculatus (Gray), and the banded eagle ray A. nichofii (Bloch et Schneider) (Myliobatidae), respectively, collected from the northern coast of Malaysian Borneo. These are the first monogeneans to be described on elasmobranchs from Borneo. The formerly monotypic Myliocotyle (for M. pteromylaei) was distinguished from other monocotylids by the distribution and morphology of the eight sclerotised dorsal haptoral accessory structures and the morphology of the...
