Iodine uptake studies in cotton rat filariasis.

C R Savitri, D M Renapurkar

Folia Parasitologica 30[1] 43-46 (1983)

A study was undertaken in cotton rat filarial (L. carinii) model to examine whether the simple goitre is due to increased utilization of iodine by filarial worms. Thyroid function test using radioisotope 131I was taken as the parameter for the study. It was observed that the uptake of 131I by thyroid gland and PB131I in infected group was comparable to control groups. The uptake of 131I by worms was negligible. The thyroid glands of infected group did not reveal any histopathological changes.

Indirect haemagglutination reaction with antigen of Sarcocystis gigantea (Railliet, 1886) Ashford, 1977.

L Cerva, J Gut

Folia Parasitologica 30[3] 223-228 (1983)

The water extract from cryolyzed whole muscle cysts of Sarcocystis gigantea from sheep, in spite of the high lectin content, is a suitable antigen for the detection of specific antibodies by means of indirect haemagglutination reaction (IHA). The agglutinating effect of lectin from parasitic cysts can be eliminated with a 0.5% concentration of lactose dissolved in all solutions used for IHA. In sera of slaughterhouse sheep, positive titres ranging from 1:80 to 1:1 280 were registered. Positive reactions in lower titres were observed also with antibodies against S. dispersa, S. cuniculi and Sarcocystis sp. from pigs. Sensibilized erythrocytes can be...

Experimental infection with the virulent, Central-European, murine Leptospira pomona strain in the pig.

Z Sebek, F Treml, M Valová

Folia Parasitologica 30[3] 269-275 (1983)

The virulent, murine Leptospira pomona strain isolated from Apodemus agrarius was used in an experimental infection of six pigs aged 4--5 months. The clinical course of the infection was inapparent, both the blood picture and the uptake of food were normal. All infected pigs produced antibodies against L. pomona at titres from 1:3 200 to 1:50 000. The reisolation of leptospires from the blood of the infected pigs was successful in one case only, and that on day two p.i. Throughout the course of our experiment, no microscopic evidence was obtained of the presence of leptospires in the blood of the infected animals. Of the six guinea pigs injected repeatedly...

The incidence of amoebiasis among secondary school students in Calabar, Nigeria.

N Umeche

Folia Parasitologica 30[3] 277-280 (1983)

A study was conducted among 2 500 secondary school students in Calabar, in order to determine the incidence of amoebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica. Microscopic examination of faecal sample smears showed higher percentage infections in the males than in the females; 61 out of 1 250 males were infected (4.8%), while 52 of 1 250 females were infected (4.1%). Among infected persons, asymptomatic carriers (64.6%) and symptomatic cases (35.4%) were recorded. Infection was lower among students using water flush toilet facilities than those using pit and bucket latrines. The infection was attributed to poor sanitation and inadequate health facilities.

Pattern of immune response in recipients after transfer of mesenteric lymph node cells sensitized with low and high doses of Ancylostoma caninum.

V V Vardhani, G N Johri

Folia Parasitologica 30[3] 285-288 (1983)

Cellular immune response was detected in female Swiss albino mice with mesenteric lymph node cells during Ancylostoma caninum infection. Sensitized lymphocytes responded vigorously to A. caninum antigens and it was found that the cells (singly or repeatedly) sensitized with either low or high doses could confer adoptive protective immunity in recipients later challenged with a single dose of 500 A. caninum larvae.

Continual cultivation of Toxoplasma gondii on HeLa cells.

A Valkoun

Folia Parasitologica 30[4] 289-294 (1983)

Continual cultivation of Toxoplasma gondii in monolayers of HeLa cells has been performed for 6 years. The toxoplasmas were then used for serial cultivation experiments. While searching for optimal conditions for toxoplasma inoculation it was found that infected HeLa cells which were scraped off the glass were a more suitable inoculum than those released by trypsinization. The optimal dose was one zoite per 12 host cells, medium level height at adsorption 2 mm and adsorption time 90 min at 37 degrees C. The concentration of sodium bicarbonate ranging from 8.7 to 26.1 mM had no effect on the multiplication of toxoplasmas. In serial passages in Roux...

Growth and transformation of Trypanosoma danilewskyi in a liquid medium.

H Rousková, J Kulda

Folia Parasitologica 30[4] 295-301 (1983)

The complex liquid medium L4NHS has proved suitable for obtaining trypomastigote-rich suspensions of the fish parasite Trypanosoma danilewskyi. Growth of T. danilewskyi strains in the medium has been characterized in test tube cultures at 25 degrees C. The cultures with an initial cell density of 1 x 10(5) x ml01 grew exponentially for 3 days with an average generation time of 15 h 17 min (strain BD) and 14 h 25 min (strain BZ). Both strains remained in the stationary phase for another 7-10 days. Total growth amounted to 1.3-1.6 x 10(7) cells x ml-1. The trypanosomes in culture were polymorphic (epimastigotes, broad trypomastigotes, slender trypomastigotes)....

Experimental infection of sheep with Bhanja virus.

V Mádr, Z Hubálek, D Zendulková

Folia Parasitologica 31[1] 79-84 (1984)

Seven juvenile sheep were infected subcutaneously (s.c.) or intracerebrally (i.c.) with Bhanja virus. Distinct symptoms of CNS affection (ataxia, pareses) were observed only in the case of i.c. application of a massive dose (10(-7) to 10(9) SMicLD50) of the Bg 336/336 strain. A short-term and low viremia (one to four days p.i.) was ascertained after i.c. infection with a dose of 10(4.7) to 10(9.2) SMicLD50 of the same strain. On the other hand, the high titres of neutralization antibodies were detected even after inoculation of small doses of the virus (e.g. 50 SMicLD50). Unlike the symptomatic response, the immune response of sheep to Bhanja virus is high.

M E Azab, E H Safer, F M Ghaffar

Folia Parasitologica 31[1] 93-96 (1984)

A modified technique for the preparation of a cercarial microscopic slide antigen for use in IFAT, that could be stored at -20 degrees C for 6 months is described. Cercariae were deposited by cooling, fixed in 0.5% buffered formaline, mixed with 7% egg albumin, dropped on slides and dried. Before use, antigen was post-fixed in absolute methyl alcohol. Evans blue was used as a counterstain. The antigen was evaluated with known human positive and negative sera, also with sera from normal individuals and others residing in endemic areas and exposed to infections with schistosomiasis; as well as with sera of patients with other helminthic infections (strongyloidiasis,...

M A Rifaat, S A Salem, M E Azab, I A el-Razik, E H Safer, S R Beshir, S F el-Shennawy

Folia Parasitologica 31[2] 97 (1984)

The effect of concomitant toxoplasma and malaria infection on the reticuloendothelial system was investigated in rats. This was evaluated by the level of plasmodial parasitaemia; humoral antibody response; effect on splenic weight; histopathological changes in thymus and spleen; histopathological and histochemical changes in liver. The parasitaemia appeared after 2 days in single malaria and concomitant infections. The peak was reached after 6 days with single and precedent malaria, and after 10 days with precedent toxoplasma. The clearance of parasitaemia was delayed to 30 days with concomitant infections instead of 14 days with single malaria. Higher...

Redescription of Neocamallanus singhi (Nematoda: Camallanidae) with a note on related species.

N C De, G Majumdar

Folia Parasitologica 31[2] 105-111 (1984)

The present paper deals with the redescription of the nematode Neocamallanus singhi Ali, 1957 based on specimens collected from the fish, Channa striata from Burdwan, West Bengal, India. Comparative study of this species with other related forms described from freshwater fishes of India and Pakistan indicates that Neocamallanus bengalensis Soota et Chaturvedi, 1971 and N. ophicephali Rehana et Bilquees, 1972 are synonyms of N. singhi.

Effect of some abiotic factors on the survival of dicrocoelium dendriticum eggs in laboratory conditions.

J M Alunda, F A Rojo-Vázquez

Folia Parasitologica 31[2] 121-126 (1984)

In the present work the results obtained from the study of the effect of temperature, RH, UV radiation and day-night thermal variations, in controlled laboratory conditions, on the survival of D. dendriticum eggs in sheep faeces are described. Mortality was seen to be maximum with a RH of 75-80% and temperatures higher than 18 degrees C. The results are compared with those obtained in natural conditions. It is suggested that the final cause of the mortality of the eggs both in laboratory and natural conditions could be the action of some microorganisms.

Comparison of counterimmunoelectrophoresis with indirect haemagglutination test in the detection of antibodies in rabbits experimentally infected with various species of ascarids.

S Lukes, J Prokopic

Folia Parasitologica 31[2] 157-162 (1984)

Counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) and indirect haemagglutination (IHA) were used for the detection of antibodies in 437 sera of rabbits experimentally infected with Ascaris suum, Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina. CIEP showed 44.0-52.3% positivity in A. suum, 25.5% in T. canis and 19.7-29.2% in T. leonina infection, whereas the positivity detected by IHA was 59.8-90.2% in A. suum, 44.8% in T. canis and 59.6% in T. leonina infection. A comparison of the two tests reveals that CIEP is a suitable, rapid and simple method for orientation examinations in ascarid infections.

Immune response in rabbits experimentally infected with Ascaris suum.

S Lukes

Folia Parasitologica 31[4] 339-343 (1984)

Immune response of rabbits experimentally infected with Ascaris suum was studied by indirect haemagglutination method. The animals were infected with the doses of 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 infective eggs per animal. Positive reactions were observed from days 5-11 p.i., maximum reactions on days 11-19 p.i. A reinfection with the same doses (1x or 2x after 35 and 65 days) increased the antibody titre. The strongest individual reaction was recorded on day 19 p.i. in the group infected with the highest dose (titre 1 : 4096). The increased antibody titres persisted til the end of the experiment (82th day p.i.) in all groups.

Folia Parasitologica 32[3] 247-253 (1985)

The correlation of aminopeptidase activity in the homogenate and perienteric fluid from Ascaris suum to the concentration of the studied fluids was assessed. The obtained non-linear correlations were interpreted as a result of the presence of the inhibitor. In further experiments, it was demonstrated that aminopeptidase inhibitor is present in the homogenate and perienteric fluid from A. suum. The effect of this inhibitor was studied using different substrates. The effects of the inhibitor on aminopeptidase activity of A. suum homogenate and on that of rabbit serum were studied. In other experiments it was found that an excess of the substrate impairs...
