Z Hubálek, J Mitterpák, J Prokopic, Z Juricová, J Kilík

Folia Parasitologica 32[3] 279-283 (1985)

755 sheep from 41 farms in the districts of Trebisov, Michalovce, Humenné and Roznava in the East Slovakian region were investigated on the presence of antibodies to Bhanja (neutralization test) and tick-borne encephalitis (haemagglutination-inhibition test) viruses. In respective districts 2.2%, 0.4%, 1.7% and 26.7% of animals (total 5.3%) were found to be positive on Bhanja virus, 4.4%, 1.5%, 1.7% and 5.0% (total 2.6%) on tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus. The considerable infection rate in sheep with Bhanja virus in the district of Roznava (mean 26.7%-on one farm as high as 63.9% serologically positive animals) can be explained by the local occurrence...

M Giboda, J Sterba, P Milácek, O Ditrich

Folia Parasitologica 32[4] 289 (1985)

Results of histopathological examination of a solitary chronical amoebic abscess in the liver of a patient from Cambodia are described. The abscess was at a proliferously reparative phase and Entamoeba histolytica was detected at the border between the necrosis and inner wall of abscess, as well as in the proper non-specific granulation tissue of the inner layers of abscess capsule. A differential diagnosis of the amoebic abscess from similar parasitary or pseudoparasitary liver lesions and differential diagnosis of amoebae in histological sections are given. For orientation examinations of the liver tissue for the presence of amoebae the authors recommend...

On the problem of retarding definitive host (s.l.).

J K Macko

Folia Parasitologica 33[2] 97-105 (1986)

The significance of the species and individual level in determining the hosts as a category of helminth life cycles is pointed out. From the viewpoint of species level, the categories of intermediate host and definitive host are ascribed to certain organisms as representatives of a certain species on the basis of the fact that a respective stage of helminth life cycle can take place inside them. From the viewpoint of individual level, these types of hosts are determined on the basis of associations between the helminth individual and host individual. In order to avoid discrepancies, which might occur in determining the host type in these ways, it is...

Trypsin-sensitive plasmodia in the liver of post-infection rats and rhesus monkeys.

Q Z Hussain, C R Pillai, B Ravindran, N Kaushik

Folia Parasitologica 33[2] 107-113 (1986)

Kupffer cells from the liver and erythrocytes from peripheral blood were collected at the post-patent period from albino rats infected earlier with Plasmodium berghei and rhesus monkeys infected earlier with P. cynomolgi var. bastianelli or P. knowlesi. The cells were subinoculated into individual normal recipients. These recipients subsequently showed parasitaemia in their circulation. The parasites present in Kupffer cell preparations were found to be sensitive to trypsin treatment, while those in erythrocytes were found to be resistant to trypsin treatment. This differential sensitivity of parasites to trypsin was observed in all the three species...

Rhabdovirus-like particles in the sporocyst of the trematode Brachylaimus fuscatus from terrestrial mollusc Ponsadenia duplocincta.

Z Zdárská, T N Soboleva, J Weiser

Folia Parasitologica 33[3] 277 (1986)

Rhabdovirus-like particles containing nucleoprotein in a helix with eight turns was demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy in subtegumental cells and syncytial layer of tegument in Brachylaimus fuscatus sporocyst. This is the first case of virus infection in trematodes. The possibility of transfer of the virus to intra-molluscan parasitic generations of the trematode is discussed with respect to the peculiarities of the life cycles of the family Brachylaimidae.

Natural focality of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Mongolian People's Republic; results and objectives of integrated research.

V M Neronov, M V Strelkova, A A Shurkhal, A A Luschekina, M M Artemyev

Folia Parasitologica 34[1] 1-9 (1987)

In the summer 1976, natural foci of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis were discovered by the authors on the territory of the Mongolian People's Republic. In 1976-1983 the integrated research of these foci was conducted and maps of a structure of the geographical range of the pathogen were compiled taking into account the peculiarities of distribution of its carriers and vectors. Great gerbils are the only identified vertebrate hosts of Leishmania and their infection rate comes up to 100% in single foci. Three species of sandflies belonging to subgenus Paraphlebotomus, Ph. andrejevi, Ph. mongolensis and Ph. alexandri, are vectors of the pathogen in foci....

Malaria in Kampuchea: clinical course of falciparum malaria in Chemin de Fer Hospital, Phnom Penh.

D M Bouth, M Giboda

Folia Parasitologica 34[1] 11-18 (1987)

To receive actual information about the clinical course of falciparum malaria case history of 373 patients hospitalized in Chemin de Fer Hospital in Phnom Penh from May 1 till October 1, 1985 were evaluated. No patients were infected in Phnom Penh. We estimated that only 8.3% of patients had higher parasitaemia than 100,000 or more asexual parasites in microliter of peripheral blood which is considered as a heavy infection. Complicated malaria was found in 39 patients (10.4%). The most frequent complications were cerebral complications (80.0%), renal failure (23.3%), and liver failure (16.6%). Ten patients had multiple organ complications and they...

Correlation of the results of IFAT-DASS and ELISA tests in experimental cysticercosis of mice.

L Vánová, S Lukes

Folia Parasitologica 34[1] 25-29 (1987)

The sera of mice experimentally infected with Taenia crassiceps were tested for the occurrence of the antibodies by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and indirect immunofluorescence using defined antigen substrate spheres (IFAT-DASS). Results of both tests were compared. From day 11 p.i. until the end of the experiment (day 108 p.i.) antibodies were detected by both tests. The maximal intensity of the ELISA and IFAT-DASS reactions was observed between days 63 and 94 and days 14 and 46 p.i., respectively. ELISA is an easy-to-do and objectively appraisable method, IFAT-DASS is more suitable for testing antigens weakly adsorbing to polystyrene...

Folia Parasitologica 34[1] 93 (1987)

Calcium salts were demonstrated by Kóssa's method in excretory corpuscles of five species of cercariae and six species of metacercariae. The interference of calcium salts in excretory corpuscles in Gomori's method for the detection of alkaline phosphatase is discussed.

To the knowledge of the common hamster (Cricetus cricetus Linné, 1758; Rodentia) as host of leptospirosis in Czechoslovakia.

Z Sebek, I Grulich, M Valová

Folia Parasitologica 34[2] 97-105 (1987)

A total of 1288 hamsters (Cricetus cricetus), coming from two regions of Czechoslovakia, were serologically investigated on the presence of leptospirosis. In 1114 hamsters from eastern Slovakia, where an outbreak occurred and local populations lived quite atypically, there was 31.8% positivity, in 174 animals from central Moravia, where the populations were at higher levels but lived normally, the positivity amounted to 17.2%. The serological positivity increases proportionately to the weight, i.e. to the age of the animals. The serovar grippotyphosa was dominant in them (29.6% of examined hamsters), while 6.0% were positive for L. pomona, 1.0% for...

Folia Parasitologica 34[4] 299 (1987)

Pathology and pathogenicity of the coccidium Eimeria scabra were studied in pigs experimentally infected at 1-2 months of age. Two phases were evident in the course of pathogenic process. In the first phase, 7-8 days after inoculation (DAI), caudal jejunum and ileum were affected by a severe catarrhal inflammation characterized by intensive infiltrate containing numerous neutrophils and eosinophils, vigorous activation of Peyer's patches, villous fusion and general atrophy of epithelium. In the second phase, 9 DAI, release of immature oocysts was associated with break-down of the epithelial barrier and development of pseudomembranes. Reparative and...

A new cestode, Wardium gvozdevi sp. n. (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae), and its biology.

A P Maksimova

Folia Parasitologica 35[3] 217-222 (1988)

A new species, Wardium gvozdevi sp. n., was described from a slender-billed gull (Larus genei Breme) in central Kazakhstan (Lake Tengiz). It was experimentally established that brine shrimps Artemia salina, abundant in the lake, are obligatory intermediate host of the cestodes. Wardium gvozdevi develops in the intermediate host (from an oncosfere to a cysticercoid) during 12-15 days under conditions of Lake Tengiz with the extremely salt water (65-80 per mill) and temperatures of 22-24 degrees C.
