Occurrence of Proteocephalus percae and P. cernuae in the perch and ruff in northern Finland.
E T Valtonen, P Rintamäki
Folia Parasitologica 36[1] 33-42 (1989)
The occurrence of two palearctic Proteocephalus species, P. percae and P. cernuae, in the perch and ruff, respectively, was studied in two areas of northern Finland in 1977-1983. In the Bothnian Bay, 243 perch (Perca fluviatilis) and 406 ruff (Gymnocephalus cernuus) were studied, of which 60% and 40%, respectively, were infected, while in Lake Yli-Kitka the prevalences were 10% in 213 perch and 24% in 307 ruff. Higher mean intensities of infection were found in the Bothnian Bay fish than in those from the lake, but no infected fish had as many as 10 worms. Proteocephalus infection in the perch and ruff did not vary significantly according to the length...

The pathogenicity of rabbit coccidium Eimeria coecicola Cheissin, 1947.
J Vítovec, M Pakandl
Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 289-293 (1989)
The pathogenicity of Eimeria coecicola for rabbits has been demonstrated in our experiments. The animals suffered from prolonged affection of appendix lasting at least 20 days. Pathological changes appeared with the development of merogony since day 4 post infection (DPI) and were characterized by an inflammatory infiltration and abundant pyogenic component in lamina propria, swelling and coalescence of upper parts of appendix mucosa above atrophied domes, where spaces filled with stagnating inflammatory exudate, endogenic stages of coccidia, and desquamated epithelia are formed. The alteration of the epithelium and exposure of the appendix lamina...
Starch gel electrophoresis of lactate dehydrogenase and glucose phosphate isomerase of poultry coccidia using the LKB multiphor.
J Kucera
Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 295-299 (1989)
A modification of thin-layer starch gel horizontal electrophoresis is described. The original method of Wraxall and Culliford (1986) is improved so that the preparation of starch gel is as simple as preparing the agarose gel. Thus the commercially supplied kits and instruments for the agarose gel electrophoresis can be also used for the starch gel electrophoresis. Furthermore, a method of preparing the permanent dry enzymograms from the starch gels with visualized enzymes is presented. The described procedure was used in the LDH and GPI analyses of poultry coccidia.
Metabolic differentiation of bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei brucei into procyclic forms in hemin-depleted medium and in the presence of respiratory inhibitors.
A Markos, A Blahůsková, M Kalous
Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 301-306 (1989)
Bloodforms of Trypanosoma brucei brucei (STIB 247) differentiated in vitro into procyclic forms as described in the accompanying paper (Markos et al. 1989). The importance of the respiratory chain for the process was tested by the inhibition of its development (omission of hemin from the medium) or function (respiratory inhibitors). In the absence of hemin, all enzyme markers of the procyclic state, except for hemoproteins, developed to 50-70 per cent of control values. The presence of hemin is therefore not essential for the onset of differentiation, although the process cannot be completed under hemin limitation. Addition of 1 mumole.dm-3 KCN, 10...
Contribution to the developmental cycle and taxonomy of Neoglyphe sobolevi Shaldybin, 1953 (Trematoda: Omphalometridae).
V Nasincová, J Busta, T A Krasnolobova
Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 313-319 (1989)
In Europe, the life cycle of the trematode N. sobolevi was studied for the first time. Following developmental stages are described in detail: daughter sporocysts, cercariae, metacercariae, adults. Snails Galba corvus and Lymnaea stagnalis were found to be the first intermediate hosts in nature. Metacercariae were obtained experimentally from larvae of the mosquitoes Culex pipiens molestus, adults from the intestine of hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) and mice (Mus musculus). This is the first finding of this species in Czechoslovakia. The stability of taxonomically important features and comparison with closely related species is discussed.
Passive transfer of humoral resistance against adults of the tsetse fly, Glossina palpalis palpalis (Diptera, Glossinidae), in rabbits.
V Matha, S Lukes, T Soldán
Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 375-377 (1989)
The possibility of passive transfer of rabbit humoral immunity against tsetse fly bites was investigated for the first time. Partial immunity of recipient animals was achieved after two intravenous injections of 15 ml of serum from immunized (donor) rabbits during 48 hrs. This treatment induced an apparent increase of resistance in the passively immunized group of rabbits expressed as direct mortality ("killing effect") of sucking flies within the following 72 hr period. The immunological state of immune sera of both donors and recipients was examined by ELISA, using the water-soluble proteins of tsetse salivary glands as antigen. No direct correlation...

Z Juricová, Z Hubálek, J Halouzka, K Hudec, J Pellantová
Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 379-383 (1989)
Migratory birds (swallow, Hirundo rustica; sand martin, Riparia riparia; house martin, Delichon urbica) caught in southern Moravia (Czechoslovakia) in 1984-87 were examined for arbovirus infections. Isolation experiments were carried out using blood samples of 183 birds (52 swallows, 107 sand martins, and 24 house martins). The results were negative. Serological examinations of 136 birds (36 swallows, 86 sand martins, and 14 house martins) were made by haemagglutination-inhibition test (HIT) using 6 arboviral antigens of the genera Alphavirus (Sindbis--SIN) and Flavivirus (tick-borne encephalitis--TBE, West Nile--WN) and of the family Bunyaviridae...

THE EFFECT OF AGE ON THE FERTILITY OF MALES OF CULEX-MOLESTUS (DIPTERA, CULICIDAE)
J OLEJNICEK
Folia Parasitologica 37[4] 355-357 (1990)
Older males of C. molestus have a markedly lowered fertility (even by 50%) and the image productivity of their progeny is much lower than that of freshly hatched males (more than 6 x). This fact may hinder the population explosion particularly in those species whose individual generations coincide in the course of a year or are much diffused.

Acarinia and nycteribidia zones of the bat species Miniopterus schreibersi Kuhl are studied in an area of northeast of Spain, where captures over a period of five years have been carried out. The species that characterize the mite-tick spectrum are Ixodes (Pomerantzevella) simplex, Macronyssus longimanus, Macronyssus granulosus and Spinturnix psi, nycteribidium is determined mainly by the presence of Nycteribia schmidlii. The life cycle, prevalence, curves of parasitation, and other notes on these most abundant ectoparasites are provided, as well as observations on other ticks, mites, and nycteribiid species found on this bat.
SCANNING ELECTRON-MICROSCOPE STUDIES ON PHILOMETRA (RANJHINEMA) BENINENSIS-OBIEKEZIE, 1986 (NEMATODA, PHILOMETRIDAE)
A I OBIEKEZIE, K ANDERS
Folia Parasitologica 38[4] 371-374 (1991)
The complement of cephalic papillae in the gravid females of Philometra (Ranjhinema) is Obiekezie, 1986 was investigated using scanning electron microscopy and the following distribution was observed: 8 fleshy lobes on the outer circle each with a pair Of equal-Sized papillae; 6 papillae on the inner circle grouped into 4 subdorsal and subventral papillae and 2 papillae on the lateral margin of the oral opening. Based on these observations, the subgeneric diagnosis of Ranjhinema Rasheed, 1963 is modified with a retention of its subgeneric status. SEM studies are further shown to be indispensable for the clarification of cephalic structures in the nematode...
ON THE MECHANISM OF PENETRATION OF OVICIDAL FUNGI THROUGH EGGSHELLS OF PARASITIC NEMATODES - DECOMPOSITION OF CHITINOUS AND ASCAROSIDE LAYERS
J KUNERT
Folia Parasitologica 39[1] 61-66 (1992)
The decomposition of egg-shells of Ascaris lumbricoides L. was studied microscopically using topochemical methods in a set of 32 strains of soil ovicidal fungi. It was found that even fungi displaying minimal chitinolytic activity in tests on purified chitin in vitro are able to dissolve chitin of egg-shells during the attack on live eggs. Fungi without any chitinolytic activity penetrate probably only the mechanically damaged eggs. None of the studied fungi was capable of degrading enzymatically the glycolipid (ascaroside) layer of the egg-shell which remained after digestion of all other components of the egg.
A SCANNING ELECTRON-MICROSCOPE STUDY OF RAILLIETASCARIS-VARANI (BAYLIS ET DAUBNEY, 1922) (NEMATODA, ASCARIDIOIDEA)
DE NC, DEY J
Folia Parasitologica 39[2] 145-151 (1992)
The Raillietascaris varani (Baylis et Daubney, 1922), parasitic in the Indian monitor lizard, Varanus monitor (L.), was studied by scanning electro microscopy (SEM). A surface topography of the worm, especially the head and male tail, were described, illustrated and discussed with regard to the available data on this species, and also other species of ascaridoid nematodes. The present study confirms the previous observations from Sprent (1985), and also provides some additional information concerning the microtopography of the worm which might be useful in comparative studies on the Ascaridoidea.
INHIBITION OF PROLIFERATION OF TUMOR-CELL CULTURES BY BIOLOGICALLY-ACTIVE SUBSTANCES ISOLATED FROM THE TISSUES OF FASCIOLA-HEPATICA AND FASCIOLA-HEPATICA-INFECTED RAT-LIVER
TSOCHEVA N, TOSHKOVA R, FILCHEV A
Folia Parasitologica 39[4] 387-390 (1992)
Biologically active substances (BAS) were isolated from the tissues of Fasciola hepatica L. and from F. hepatica-infected rat liver by ethanol precipitation from aqueous tissue homogenates. A marked inhibiting effect of the newly isolated BAS on hepatoma MC29 cell culture proliferation and a slight inhibiting effect of the newly isolated BAS on myeloma cell culture proliferation was found. The strongest inhibiting effect was by BAS isolated from the tissues of F. hepatica. The inhibiting effect of the BAS isolated from F. hepatica-infected liver was stronger than the effect of the BAS isolated from normal liver tissue.
