Small mammals as reservoirs and transmitters of leptospires in livestock-breeding farms and their surroundings.

Z Sebek, M Vlcek, J Sterba

Folia Parasitologica 30[4] 363-371 (1983)

From 1976 to 1978, we examined 1723 wild small mammals, representing 15 species, from three animal production farms and their surroundings in the Trebon basin, south Bohemia, in order to detect antibodies against leptospirosis. Antibodies were found against the serovars grippotyphosa, sorex-jalna, sejroe and/or istrica. The serological positivity was higher in wet grassland stands and fields bordering fishponds. The dominant serovar was grippotyphosa against which antibodies were detected in 8 species of exoanthropic and synanthropic mammals. Owing to the wide ecological valence of the main natural reservoir of L. grippotyphosa--Microtus arvalis, this...

Activities of some enzymes in the perienteric fluid of Ascaris suum.

J Zenka, J Prokopic

Folia Parasitologica 30[4] 373-376 (1983)

Activities of 12 enzymes (amylase, lipase, cholinesterase, nonspecific carboxyl esterase, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alkaline phosphatase, glutamate-oxalacetate transaminase (GOT), glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT), gamma-glutamyl transferase (gamma-GT), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and peroxidase) were determined in the perienteric fluid and homogenate of Ascaris suum. With the exception of amylase, all activities were higher in the homogenate than in the perienteric fluid. The enzyme activities in the perienteric fluid were then compared with those in the human serum. Comparable activities were demonstrated for LDH,...

Studies on ticks of veterinary importance in Nigeria XVII. Resistance of rabbits to infestation with Amblyomma variegatum and Boophilus decoloratus (Acari: Ixodidae).

O O Dipeolu, E A Harunah

Folia Parasitologica 31[4] 357-362 (1984)

Rabbits exposed to larvae, nymphs and adults of Amblyomma variegatum acquired resistance to the infestation with adults of this tick. The degree of acquired resistance was lowest in the rabbits exposed once previously to larvae and highest in those exposed twice previously to adults. Rabbits also acquired resistance after primary infestation with Boophilus decoloratus; their resistance became very high during the thrice-repeated feeding. New terms are introduced for the quantification of the degree of resistance of animals to tick infestation. Rabbits were protected against infestation with B. decoloratus by intravenous injection of serum from the...

Changes in ascorbic acid content in various organs and serum of mice experimentally infected with Taenia crassiceps (Zeder, 1800) cysticerci.

E Strnadová, J Prokopic

Folia Parasitologica 32[2] 185-188 (1985)

It was demonstrated that helmith infection affects the ascorbic acid content in various tissues of experimental mice. The level of vitamin C in the mouse liver, kidneys, spleen and serum decreases after infection with T. crassiceps. Maximum decrease in blood serum was observed on day 7 p.i. at the intensity of infection 15 and 30 cysticerci per mouse. There was a correlation between the intensity of infection and decrease in the ascorbic acid level in the spleen.

Malaria in the province of Takeo, Cambodia.

M Giboda

Folia Parasitologica 32[3] 205-210 (1985)

Malaria was studied in the province of Takeo, Cambodia. In the hyperendemic region of Kirivong district, 49 (46.0%) of 105 suspected patients were found to be infected, 98% of them with Plasmodium falciparum and 2.0% with P. vivax. The highest prevalence (85.7%) was recorded in the group of 15-20-year-old patients. A total of 296 patients were examined in the hospital of Takeo during one year (1983-1984) and 77 (26.0%) of them were positive. P. falciparum infection was found in 76.6% and P. vivax in 23.4% of cases. The highest prevalence (42.3%) was also in the age-group of 15-20 years. The "7-day test" was used in vivo in 15 patients in order to detect...

Folia Parasitologica 32[4] 323 (1985)

Results of clinical and laboratory examination of animals experimentally infected with Taenia saginata eggs are described. At the early stage of infection, increased temperature, cough, muscle shaking and unstable pace were observed. The locomotive disorders disappeared only on day 50 p.i. Leukocytosis and peripheric eosinophilia were found at the early stage of infection. On days 14-28 p.i. the activity of serum creatine-kinase (CK) significantly increased. The activity of other enzymes (AST, ALT, LD, ALP and ALD) examined was increased only slightly and irregularly. The lipid content in blood serum markedly increased on days 9-16 p.i.

Replication of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus in Ixodes ricinus ticks.

O Kozuch, J Nosek

Folia Parasitologica 32[4] 373-375 (1985)

The influence of external factors on virus carriage of Ixodes ricinus ticks in laboratory and in nature was studied. In laboratory experiment, only one nymph was positive for the presence of virus on 120th day after metamorphosis. The virus titer was 10(2) mouse i.c. LD50/0.03 ml. Transmission experiments were negative. The nymphs were positive on 75th, 111th and 159th day after metamorphosis, always chilling in the field experiment. The titres of virus varied from the lowest detectable amount value to 10(3.6) mouse i.c. LD50/0.03 ml. The transmission of virus was positive in two cases.
