N Umeche, A E Ima

Folia Parasitologica 35[2] 165-168 (1988)

A study of intestinal helminthic infections of 52 cats (Felis catus) was undertaken in Calabar, Nigeria. Direct smear and zinc sulphate floatation technique were utilized. The following helminths were observed: Toxocara cati (28.85%), Ancylostoma tubaeforme (19.23%), Trichuris felis (5.77%), Dipylidium caninum (23.08%) and Taenia taeniaeformis (9.61%). The worm burdens were generally low, ranging from 2 to 20 per cat. No definite pattern of infection was observed with regard to sex. Trematodes were not seen. The zoonotic and public health aspects of some of these helminths are discussed.

Rapid serological diagnosis of tick-borne encephalitis by means of enzyme immunoassay.

L Grubhoffer, K Krivanec, J Kopecký, E Tomková

Folia Parasitologica 35[2] 181-187 (1988)

A system of IgM-capture EIA made up from Czechoslovak immunopreparations (SEVAC) was developed for a rapid serological diagnosis of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). The method was tested on clinical material. The total IgM antibody titres were detected using pig antiserum and the selection of specific IgM antibodies was made with TBE antigen with following indirect way of detection. The antibody analysis made by means of this method is sensitive and fully conforms to the clinical picture of the disease.

Cysticercus bovis: pinocytosis in the Cysticercus tegument.

J Schramlová, K Blazek

Folia Parasitologica 35[3] 223 (1988)

The authors have found that pinocytosis occurs in the tegument of C. bovis from the fourth week after infection. Electron-lucid bladders surrounded by plasma membrane were encountered in the distal cytoplasm. The pinocytosis occurred in form of micropinocytotic bladders only in the bladder tegument but not in the scolex. The bladders appeared first in the superficial part of the distal cytoplasm. During the following periods of development of the larva they were dispersed in the whole distal cytoplasm and were found even in the processes of subtegumental cells and inside these cells near the heterolysosomes.

The effect of infection by Babesia sp. on some biological parameters of engorged females of Boophilus microplus.

A A Guglielmone, A J Mangold, D H Aguirre, A B Gaido, A A De Olsen

Folia Parasitologica 36[1] 1-6 (1989)

Engorged females (EF) of Boophilus microplus tick were collected from Hereford, Criolla and Nelloreheifers of three different herds to study the influence of natural babesial infection on the following biological parameters of the EF: engorgement weight, preoviposition period, minimal egg incubation period, egg hatching and Reproductive Efficiency Index. No detrimental consequences to the reproduction of EF carrying babesial infection were found when compared with those EF in which no kinetes of Babesia were detected. Even the groups of EF most highly parasitized (21 to 110 kinetes per microscope field of hemolymph) showed biological values considered...

Blood groups and filariasis.

H Kumar, S Santhanam

Folia Parasitologica 36[2] 163-167 (1989)

Only a little is known about the studies done with filariasis in relation to blood groups. The present communication reports the results of a preliminary study carried out to investigate any relationship of ABO and Rho(D) blood groups in persons with circulating microfilariae (mf) in blood and with disease manifestations compared with healthy normal controls within a population in similar epidemiological and ecological conditions. Blood groups ABO and Rho(D) were investigated among 271 persons with filarial disease and 172 normal subjects from an endemic area of bancroftian filariasis. No relationship was observed between infection and blood groups....

Brugia malayi: status of host during different stages of infection.

A Joshi, J K Saxena, P K Murthy, A B Sen, S Ghatak

Folia Parasitologica 36[2] 169-175 (1989)

The status of glycogen, protein, lipid components, lipid peroxides and a few enzymes of energy metabolism was studied in liver of Mastomys natalensis during the development of Brugia malayi infection. Glycogen and lipid contents were decreased during the patent phase of infection while total protein was slightly altered in latent animals. Phospholipid and triglyceride contents declined at prepatent and patent phase of infection. The levels of lactate and malate dehydrogenases, as well as of adenosine triphosphatases (Na+K+, Mg2+, Ca2+), were significantly elevated and monoamine oxidase activity was decreased at patent phase of infection, while succinic...

An analysis of Trichinella pseudospiralis excretions and study of their effect on striated muscles of mouse.

J Zenka, D Hulínská, A Jegorov

Folia Parasitologica 36[2] 177 (1989)

The causes of changes observed after infection of muscles with Trichinella pseudospiralis larvae were studied. The changes are not only regressive, but also proliferative (activation and mitosis of satellite cells and formation of new myotubes). By means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and an original method it was found that T. pseudospiralis larvae excrete into their environment among others a great amount of n-butylamine. A direct application of n-butylamine into the gluteal muscle of mouse supported the assumption that this amine is one of the factors causing the changes in muscles induced by T. pseudospiralis infection. The application...

NC DE

Folia Parasitologica 37[4] 295-299 (1990)

The nematode, Lappetascaris lutjani, recovered from the fish, Pellona ditchela from West Bengal, India, was studied by light and scanning electron microscopes. Surface features of the head and tail ends of the body as also the distal parts of the spicules were described, illustrated and discussed with regard to the available data relative to this species. Present LM studies provide information concerning the head structure in greater detail and existence of narrow but distinct lateral cervical alae. SEM studies give microtopographic details of the worm. Some of these represent new information and might be useful in the taxonomic evaluation of this...

UNIQUE OCCURRENCE OF LARVAL STAGES OF AUSTRALAPATEMON SP IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA

NASINCOVA, V

Folia Parasitologica 37[4] 301-305 (1990)

Cercariae Australapatemon sp. were found in the snail Radix peregra peregra in North Bohemia (Czechoslovakia). Developmental stages obtained from the first intermediate host-daughter sporocysts and cercariae are described in detail. The penetration of cercariae into the leech Glossiphonia heteroclita was observed; further development in the second intermediate host was not studied. Until now, the larval stages of this type have been known only from Australia.

R ERGENS

Folia Parasitologica 37[4] 337-339 (1990)

Gyrodactylus kearni sp. n. and G. lamberti sp. n. (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae) are described from the fins of the freshwater fish, Leuciscus cephalus (L.) (Cyprinidae), from the Rokytna River and Stepanovicky Brook (basin of the River Danube), Czechoslovakia. G. kearni sp. n. is most related to G. leucisci Zitnan, 1964 in the shape and size or marginal hooks, but can be seperated from it in the shape of anchors and ventral bar. G. lamberti sp. n. is most closely related to G. gobii Shulman, 1953 and G. truttae Glaser, 1974 in the shape of the complex of anchors, but differs markedly from them in the shape of the hook proper of marginal hooks.

BRUGIA-MALAYI IN MASTOMYS-NATALENSIS - EFFICACY OF MEBENDAZOLE IN COMBINATION WITH FREUND COMPLETE ADJUVANT

PK MURTHY, K TYAGI, RK CHATTERJEE

Folia Parasitologica 39[1] 51-59 (1992)

The chemotherapeutic efficacy of mebendazole given in combination with Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) against Brugia malayi in multimammate rat was evaluated. Animals treated with mebendazole, orally at 200 mg/kg x 5 consecutive days along with FCA given subcutaneously (s.c.) on day -10, day 0 and day + 15 of the drug treatment killed 48.51 % of the adult worms. This drug given alone at the same regimen and by the same route showed only 18.7 % mortality rate on adults. Mebendazole given intraperitoneally along with FCA given s.c., however, was four times more efficacious as filaricide than mebendazole alone. Nevertheless, the animals receiving FCA...
