First detection of Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts in calf faeces by floatation method.

I Pavlásek

Folia Parasitologica 29[2] 115 (1982)

Oocysts of coccidia of the genes Cryptosporidium were detected for the first time in the faeces of naturally infected calves using centrifugation floatation method with saturated solution of ZnSo4 and Breza's floatation solution. Since the detection of oocysts in the faeces is very difficult, a new method has been prepared. The oocysts recovered from the faeces were sporulated, spherical or slightly elliptical, with a smooth, colourless and thin wall. In the fresh preparation after floatation the oocysts measured 5.4 X 4.6 micrometer on the average, whereas in the smears stained after Giemsa, their average size was 4.8 X 4.3 micrometer. A typical feature...

Migration of some roundworm species in experimentally infected white mice.

J Prokopic, V Figallová

Folia Parasitologica 29[4] 309-313 (1982)

The migration of four roundworm species (Ascaris suum, Toxocara canis, T. cati and Toxascaris leonina) was studied in various organs of experimentally infected white mice. The hatching of T. leonina and T. cati larvae in the paratenic host is more rapid (24-36 h) than the hatching of A. suum and T. canis larvae (1-6 days). The deposition of larvae in host organs is different in the individual species. Maximum number of larvae in the liver: T. leonina and A. suum on day 4, T. canis on day 2 and T. cati on day 1. Maximum number of larvae in the lungs: A. suum and T. leonina on day 7, T. cati on day 2 and T. canis on day 1. Maximum number of larvae in...

Glycogen content in Gastrothylax crumenifer and Cotylophoron orientale after the isolation of parasites, their starvation and refeeding with various carbohydrates.

R Bahadur, P C Gupta

Folia Parasitologica 31[3] 259-263 (1984)

The average reserve glycogen content in unstarved (control) parasites, 4.7 +/- 0.14 g/100 g F.T. (fresh weight of tissue) in Gastrothylax crumenifer and 3.15 +/- 0.14 g/100 g F.T. in Cotylophoron orientale has been estimated biochemically. The consumption of endogenous glycogen was found to be 18.47%, 44.37%, 66.66% and 78.13% of F. T. in G. crumenifer and 14.92%, 40.95%, 66.34% and 71.42% of F.T. in C. orientale during 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours of starvation. Both the parasites were able to resynthesize 71.71% and 75.42% of lost glycogen (maximum up to 16 hours) on refeeding in nutrient medium containing glucose. The maximum resynthesis of lost glycogen...

Ultrastructure of eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides Linnaeus, 1758. I. Egg-shells.

H Lýsek, J Malínský, R Janisch

Folia Parasitologica 32[4] 381 (1985)

Under the light microscope the chitin-protein layer of egg-shells in ascarids appears to be a regular, hyaline and nonstructural layer of 1.5 to 2.00 microns in thickness. The outer uterine layer is usually removed during the preparation. The lipid (ascaroside) layer covers the inner surface of the chitinous layer and seems to be irregularly undulated and regularly thick over the whole surface, with the thickness up to 1 micron. In electron micrographs the fibrous structure of the lipid layer is not evident as a rule. This is probably due to washing the lipids away from this layer during the dehydration of deeper layers of egg-shells that are imperfectly...

Serodiagnosis of Toxoplasma gondii in habitually aborting women and other adults from North Jordan.

S K Abdel-Hafez, I Shbeeb, N S Ismail, F Abdel-Rahman

Folia Parasitologica 33[1] 7-13 (1986)

The prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in serum samples of 55 habitually aborting women, 46 women with normal pregnancies, 92 outpatient adults, and 150 University students from North Jordan was studied using the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Sera from the habitually aborting group were also tested by the indirect immunofluorescent (IIF) test. No significant difference was found between the overall prevalence rates in University students, outpatient adults and women with normal pregnancies (25.3%, 22.8% and 26.1% respectively). The prevalence in habitually aborting women exceeded two times that in women with normal pregnancies...

The concept of vector in parasitology, ecology of agents, epidemiology and epizootology.

E I Korenberg, V N Kryuchechnikov

Folia Parasitologica 33[3] 241-248 (1986)

The concepts of "host" and "vector" are compared in application to arthropods which are capable to transmit pathogens to man and animals. The paper shows that these concepts are not identical. The function of such arthropods as hosts of microorganisms, as well as their possible importance in population ecology, epidemiology and epizootology are discussed. The system of different concepts corresponding to the tasks of these scientific disciplines is also considered.

The prevalence of toxoplasmosis among inhabitants of the Niger Delta.

F O Arene

Folia Parasitologica 33[4] 311-314 (1986)

Blood samples from 1,650 inhabitants of the Niger Delta were examined for Toxoplasma antibodies by the Sabin--Feldman dye-test. Of that number, 972 (58.9%) presented significant antibody titres. The prevalence rates of the infection varied among different age groups. The highest prevalence rate was recorded among 16-20 years age group (75.3%) and the lowest among inhabitants over 50 years old. Children 1-5 years old had a relatively high prevalence rate (66.0%), with a proportionately higher dye-test antibody titres. More females (64.8%), than males (53.0%) were infected. Also more farmers than people in other occupations in the area were found to...

J KUCERA, M REZNICKY

Folia Parasitologica 38[2] 107-113 (1991)

Oocysts of Eimeria species from the fowl have been identified using a computerized image-analysis system (Leitz T.A.S. Plus Image-Analyser). The system enabled semiautomatic measurement of oocyst dimensions with subsequent species diagnosis based on graphic statistical evaluation of size and shape of measured parasites. E. mitis, E. acervulina, E. brunetti, E. maxima, E. tenella and complex of E. necatrix and E. praecox were distinguishable both in pure cultures and in mixtures. It was not possible to distinguish E. praecox from E. necatrix using this system.

THE LIFE-CYCLE OF RUBENSTREMA-OPISTHOVITELLINUM SOLTYS, 1954 (TREMATODA, OMPHALOMETRIDAE)

V NASINCOVA, J BUSTA

Folia Parasitologica 38[3] 217-224 (1991)

The life cycle of Rubenstrema opisthovitellinum Soltys, 1954, a parasite of shrews, is elucidated. The following developmental stages are described in detail: daughter sporocyst, cercaria, metacercaria, and adult. The freshwater snail Planorbarius corneus was found to be the first intermediate host in nature. The metacercariae were obtained from the larvae of mosquitoes Culex molestus and only exceptionally from snails Physa acuta. The adults were obtained from the small intestine of hamsters Mesocricetus auratus. The life cycle and the larval stages of R. opisthovitellinum are described for the first time.

E I KORENBERG, M HORAKOVA, J V KOVALEVSKY, Z HUBALEK, A S KARAVANOV

Folia Parasitologica 39[1] 85-92 (1992)

A total of 3,254 adults of Ixodes persulcatus tick were collected in a taiga forest habitat situated in the Amgun river basin (Khabarovsk region, the Far East, USSR) and examined individually for the presence and amount of tick-borne encephalitis virus. The over-all proportion of infected ticks was 6.6 % and it varied between 3.4 % and 9.4 % in the years 1982 to 1985. The amount of virus per tick was approximated by the gamma distribution determining a probability that the number of plaque-forming units (PFU) per tick is not greater than a selected value. The frequency distribution of infected ticks followed a model of the negative binomial distribution,...

Role of grey squirrels and pheasants in the transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the Lyme disease spirochaete, in the U.K.

Craine N G, Nuttall P A, Marriott A C, Randolph S E

Folia Parasitologica 44[2] 155-160 (1997)

In Britain, grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis Gmelin) and pheasants (Phasianus colchicus Linnaeus) are important hosts of larvae and nymphs of Ixodes ricinus L., the principal European vector of the Lyme disease spirochaete, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. To test whether squirrels are competent hosts of B. burgdorferi s.l., three females were trapped in the wild and then held in captivity. Following treatment, each animal was exposed to uninfected xenodiagnostic I. ricinus ticks. Squirrel A (an adult) which was inoculated experimentally with B. burgdorferi s.l., transmitted the infection to xenodiagnostic ticks. In contrast, squirrel B (a juvenile...

Transmission cycles of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato involving Ixodes ricinus and/or I-hexagonus ticks and the European hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus, in suburban and urban areas in Switzerland

Gern L, Rouvinez E, Toutoungi LN, Godfroid E

Folia Parasitologica 44[4] 309-314 (1997)

European hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus Linnaeus, 1758, is a common host of Ixodes ricinus L, and I. hexagonus Leach, vectors of the Lyme disease spirochaete, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. TO investigate whether hedgehogs are reservoirs for B. burgdorferi, hedgehogs were captured in a suburban area suitable for both tick species and in an urban area where I, ricinus is absent. The infection status of the hedgehogs was determined by xenodiagnosis using I. ricinus and I. hexagonus larvae. I. hexagonus and/or I. ricinus were found on;ll hedgehogs (n = 8) from the suburban area. In contrast, only I. hexagonus was infesting animals (n = 5) from the urban...

Chemical stability of assembly pheromone of argasid ticks (Ixodoidea : Argasidae)

Dusbabek F, Zahradnickova H, Simek P

Folia Parasitologica 45[1] 62-66 (1998)

Chemical stability and aggregation activity of assembly pheromone of argasid ticks and its synthetic purine analogues were studied during long-lasting storage at room temperature as the potential components of attractant/acaricide mixtures. Guanine spherules from dry excreta of Ornithodoros moubata Murray, 1877 were very stable in their chemical composition and did not suffer from purine degradation. However, an intensive purine conversion into uric acid occurred in samples of the fluid of the excreta of Argas persicus (Oken, 1818) and to a lesser extent also in an artificial mixture of synthetic guanine, xanthine and hypoxanthine in saline. The presence...

Folia Parasitologica 45[2] 140-148 (1998)

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques have been developed for the detection of microsporidian DNA in different biological samples. We used sequence data of the rRNA gene for the identification of Enterocytozoon bieneusi, Encephalitozoon intestinalis, E. cuniculi, and E. hellem in different biological samples of HIV-infected patients by PCR, Southern blot hybridization, restriction endonuclease digestion analysis, cloning, and comparative genetic sequencing. One primer pair was used for amplification of the entire small subunit (SSU)-rRNA gene of E. bieneusi, E. intestinalis, and E. hellem from samples with electron microscopy confirmed infection....

Pseudorhabdosynochus capurroi sp. n. (Monogenea: Diplectanidae) from the gills of Mycteroperca bonaci (Pisces: Serranidae) of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Victor M. Vidal-Martínez, Edgar F. Mendoza-Franco

Folia Parasitologica 45[3] 221-224 (1998)

A new monogenean species, Pseudorhabdosynochus capurroi sp. n., is described from the gills of the black grouper, Mycteroperca bonaci (Poey) (Serranidae), from the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. The new species can be differentiated from all other known species of Pseudorhabdosynochus Yamaguti, 1958 by being the largest one recorded until now (1162-1535 µm body length). Moreover, the vagina of P. capurroi has a small funnel-shaped opening with a non sclerotized vesicle from which a fine sclerotized duct leads proximally to a sclerotized seminal receptacle, and the testis is bilobate. The squamodiscs have 14 to 16 rows of rods, of which 3 to 5 rows...
