Studies on ticks of veterinary importance in Nigeria. VIII. Differences observed in the biology of ticks which fed on different domestic animal hosts.

O O Dipeolu, C A Adeyefa

Folia Parasitologica 31[1] 53-61 (1984)

Ticks of the species Amblyomma variegatum (Fabr.), Boophilus decoloratus (Koch), Boophilus geigyi Aeschl. et Morel, and Hyalomma rufipes Koch were detached from cattle, sheep and horses and the influence of these various hosts on the biology of ticks was investigated. No A. variegatum was found in horses. The parameters studied were preoviposition and oviposition periods, ovipositional capacity, eclosion period, hatching patterns, egg sizes and temperature effect. Although the preoviposition and eclosion periods were similar in each tick species irrespective of the host from which the adults were detached, the oviposition period was longest among ticks...

Effects of host-immunity on the life cycle of Hyalomma rufipes Koch, 1844 (Ixodoidea: Ixodidae).

M H Rahman

Folia Parasitologica 31[1] 63-67 (1984)

Studies of the effects of host-immunity on the life cycle of Hyalomma rufipes were carried out by allowing the ticks to feed on New Zealand white rabbits under laboratory conditions. The immunity of the rabbit host significantly affected the life cycle of this tick, reducing the percentage recovery of engorged females, their engorged weights and the total number of eggs laid by these females. The viability of the eggs laid by them was also considerably reduced compared to the eggs laid by females fed on naive rabbit hosts. The effects of host immunity were also revealed in the tendency towards three-host development of this species, which otherwise...

Basic regulatory parameters of the host-parasite system for warble flies of farm animals using Hypoderma bovis as an example.

A G Bart, J Minár

Folia Parasitologica 31[3] 277-287 (1984)

While studying the consistent patterns in the host-parasite relationships on the model of warble flies infesting cattle, a firm internal regulatory system governing the number of parasites on the host and reflected in the level of populations, has been demonstrated. This regulatory system is governed by mathematical-statistical laws and therefore can be modelled and its different features expressed mathematically. The distribution of parasites in the host population agrees with the negative binomial distribution. Main mathematical formulations of the regulatory system (parameters) and defensive responses of the host to the invasion of parasites are...

Internal regulatory systems--common consistent patterns in the parasite-host relationships with specific parasites.

J Minár

Folia Parasitologica 33[1] 71-75 (1986)

While studying the population ecology of cattle warble flies (Diptera, Hypodermatidae) in Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union and Mongolia a firm internal regulatory system, determining the population density of parasites and operating on the principle of negative feedback, was demonstrated. The negative binomial distribution proved to be a suitable model in other parasite groups as well. The internal regulatory systems are common consistent patterns in the parasite-host relationship with specific parasites. These consistent patterns and the methodical approach to them are of wider importance not only for parasitology in particular, but for the research...

Effect of vitamins on Trichinella spiralis Owen, 1835 infection in mice.

V Figallová, J Prokopic

Folia Parasitologica 35[2] 157-163 (1988)

The effects of vitamins A, B complex, E, and ADE on the body weight, eosinophilia, intensity of infection and distribution of T. spiralis larvae were studied in mice. The greatest loss of weight followed after the application of vitamins B complex and E. An increased eosinophilia appeared in the majority of infected mice since day 7 p.i., reaching the maximum on day 21 p.i. In mice receiving vitamins B complex, A, and ADE, the increased eosinophilia was observed still on day 60 p.i. The highest levels of eosinophilia occurred after the application of vitamins B complex and E, which was directly proportional to the intensity of infection. The lowest...

Cutaneous and blood leucocyte response of pigeons to larval Argas polonicus feeding.

F Dusbábek, V Skárková-Spaková, J Vítovec, J Sterba

Folia Parasitologica 35[3] 259 (1988)

Dynamics of granular leucocyte response in peripheral blood of naive and sensitized pigeons infested with Argas polonicus larvae was only slightly dissimilar. In both cases a marked increase of heterophil and eosinophil counts and only a mild increase of basophil count were recorded at 6 hours post-infestation. In naive hosts the basophil count increased again at 96 hours post-infestation, but in sensitized hosts it did so as early as 48 hours post-tick attachment and was also accompanied by an increase of eosinophil levels 72 and 96 hours post-infestation. Cutaneous response of sensitized hosts at the tick feeding site was characterized by a large...

The effect of tolypin in Tolypocladium niveum crude extract against mosquito and blackfly larvae in the laboratory.

V Matha, J Weiser, J Olejnícek

Folia Parasitologica 35[4] 379-381 (1988)

The efficacy of tolypin against mosquito and blackfly larvae was studied under laboratory conditions. It was tested against Culex molestus, Aedes aegypti, Anopheles maculipennis, Simulium noelleri and Odagmia ornata. A concentration 0.1 mg/ml caused 100% mortality in all species tested and a concentration 0.001 mg/ml caused 100% mortality only in the two species of blackflies used within 24 hours.

Amoebiasis in foreign students.

M Giboda, O Ditrich, N Vokurková-Vrchotová

Folia Parasitologica 37[2] 97-104 (1990)

A total of 2,883 foreign students at the age of 18-30 years were examined for amoebiasis after their arrival to Czechoslovakia. Stool examinations revealed the presence of Entamoeba histolytica in 112 of them (3.9%). Students from 38 countries were found to be infected with this parasite. In a set of 2,064 students from these countries E. histolytica prevalence in stool was 5.4%. There were greater differences in the prevalence between individual countries inside a geographical region than between individual geographical regions. The highest E. histolytica prevalence in stool was found in students from tropical and southern Africa (6.7% of 745 examined)...

A survey on indoor resting mosquito species in Phnom Penh, Kampuchea.

M Kohn

Folia Parasitologica 37[2] 165-174 (1990)

Indoor resting mosquitoes were collected in 7 localities (250 houses) of Phnom Penh at various periods. The mosquitoes were collected for 8 min in every house by means of an aspirator and net. A total of 16 species of mosquitoes resting in houses were found, one of them for the first time in Kampuchea. Culex quinquefasciatus was the predominant species in 6 of the localities observed; its predominance in houses was more or less evident; Aedes aegypti prevailed in one locality. The percentage of A. aegypti predominance in houses corresponds with the risk of occurrence of dengue haemorrhagic fever. Anopheles vagus was found resting in higher abundance...

Structure of the Aedes aegypti (L.) and Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae) populations in the houses of Phnom Penh (Kampuchea).

M Kohn

Folia Parasitologica 37[2] 175-181 (1990)

Sex ratio and engorged females ratio were studied in the main mosquito species populations (Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus and partially Anopheles vagus) in the houses of Phnom Penh. Collections were carried out in 7 different localities, including area from the centre of the town to the periphery. In Ae. aegypti and C. quinquefasciatus populations females were dominant in 5 localities, while males were dominant in 2 localities. Engorged females were predominant over unfed ones in all cases (collections were always carried out in the morning). Structure of population varied slightly according to the date of collection. The influence of two main...

This paper provides detailed description and illustrations of C. lacustris, based on new material from the territory of the USSR

THE CHEMOTHERAPY OF MONOGENEANS WHICH PARASITIZE FISH - A REVIEW

G SCHMAHL

Folia Parasitologica 38[2] 97-106 (1991)

Monogeneans which parasitize fish are still treated by bathing the fish in solutions of simple chemicals or staining dyes. In the early 1960s an insecticide, trichlorphon, replaced to a large extent the formerly used simple chemicals. Its success was greater specificity against monogeneans and other ectoparasites, and to its great tolerance by the fish. The fact that the number of important monogenean species (i.e. Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae, P. bini, Gyrodactylus salaris) which cannot be treated sufficiently with simple chemicals or even trichlorphon is increasing, led to the need for systemically acting, novel chemotherapeutics. In laboratory and...

THE LIFE-CYCLE OF ECHINOSTOMA-BOLSCHEWENSE (KOTOVA, 1939) (TREMATODA, ECHINOSTOMATIDAE)

V NASINCOVA

Folia Parasitologica 38[2] 143-154 (1991)

The life cycle of E. bolschewense, the species with 37 collar spines and closely related to E. revolutum, was experimentally studied. The following developmental stages are described: mother and daughter rediae, cercaria, metacercaria, and adult. The freshwater prosobranchiate snail Viviparus contectus was found to be the first intermediate host in nature. Under experimental conditions, the miracidia developed in V. contectus. They did not, however, penetrate into Bithynia tentaculata or into any of the pulmonate snails tested. The cercariae encysted in various Prosobranchia and Pulmonata. Adult worms were commonly obtained from hamsters (Mesocricetus...

OBSERVATIONS ON 2 RHABDOCHONA SPECIES (NEMATODA, RHABDOCHONIDAE) FROM FRESH-WATER FISHES IN IRAQ, INCLUDING DESCRIPTION OF R-SIMILIS SP-N

F MORAVEC, N M ALI, E S ABULEIS

Folia Parasitologica 38[3] 235-243 (1991)

Two species of the nematode genus Rhabdochona, R. similis sp. n. and R. denudata denudata (Dujardin, 1845), are reported for the first time from freshwater fishes from Iraq. The new species R. similis sp. n. (type host Glyptothorax sp.) is characterized largely by the presence of a markedly large prostom armed with 14 anterior teeth and without basal teeth, small spicule without a usual dorsal barb, and filamented eggs. Findings of R. denudata denudata in Barbus luteus and Cyprinion macrostomum represent new host records. Rhabdochona mesopotamica Rahemo et Kasim, 1979 is considered a junior synonym of R. denudata (Dujardin, 1845).

SIGNS, LARVAL BURDENS, AND SEROLOGICAL RESPONSES OF DOGS EXPERIMENTALLY INFECTED WITH TRICHINELLA-SPIRALIS OWEN, 1835

D D BOWMAN, M F FRONGILLO, K B JOHNSTON, R C JOHNSON

Folia Parasitologica 38[3] 245-253 (1991)

The effects of infections of Trichinella spiralis on 10 specific-pathogen-free Beagles were examined. Eight puppies received either 100, 500, 1,000, or 5,000 larvae, and 2 adult dogs received 1,000 larvae. Blood was drawn every 4 days, beginning 5 days before infection, for the determination of relative eosinophil numbers. Creatine kinase levels were monitored before infection, two weeks after infection, and one month after infection. The dogs were euthanized 1 month postinfection, and larvae were counted in muscle digests of 10 gram samples of diaphragm, pectoralis superficialis, masseter, biceps brachii, and vastus lateralis. The dogs displayed minor...

USE OF ELISA FOR THE DIAGNOSTICS OF OVINE SARCOCYSTOSIS

V SVOBODOVA, M NEVOLE

Folia Parasitologica 38[4] 303-308 (1991)

A modification of micro ELISA was used for the detection of specific antibodies in the diagnostics of ovine sarcocystosis. The results of ELISA compared to those of indirect fluorescence reaction (IFR) were identical in 94.7%. The titres of specific antibodies were higher in 70.8% of samples if ELISA was used. The coincidence of the two tests is statistically highly significant (P < 0.005). ELISA can be recommended for both experimental and routine examinations for ovine sarcocystosis.

MEXICONEMA-CICHLASOMAE GEN-ET SP (NEMATODA, DANICONEMATIDAE) FROM CICHLASOMA-SPP (PISCES) FROM MEXICO

MORAVEC F, VIDAL V, MALDONADO GS

Folia Parasitologica 39[1] 33-40 (1992)

A new nematode genus and species, Mexiconema cichlasomae gen. et sp. n., is described from the abdominal cavity, viscera (mesenteries, swimbladder, liver, spleen, kidneys, intestinal lumen, serose cover of intestine) and rarely the skin below the scales of four species of cichlids, Cichlasoma urophthalmus (type host), C. helleri, C. motaguense and C. pearsei from the salt water coastal lagoon Celestun (N. Yucatan) (type locality) and several other freshwater, salt water and marine localities from Mexico. This dracunculoid nematode species represents a new genus of the recently established, hitherto monotypic family Daniconematidae. The new genus Mexiconema...
