Parasitological investigation of children's sandboxes and dog faeces from public areas of housing development in Prague.
J Valkounová
Folia Parasitologica 29[2] 133-138 (1982)
Two hundred sand samples from 50 children's sandboxes and 500 samples of dog faeces collected in 10 Prague housing developments were examined for the presence of parasites. Eggs of three helminth species were found in 28% of sandboxes and eggs and oocysts of 10 species of parasites were found in 10.4% of dog faeces. Toxocara canis occurred in 9 sandboxes and 3.2% of dog faeces, T. cati in 0.2% of dog faeces. The results from housing developments are compared with those from older estates.

B Borcić, H Kovacić, Z Sebek, B Aleraj, N Tvrtković
Folia Parasitologica 29[2] 177-182 (1982)
Small mammals trapped in seven sites along the river Sava in Croatia were examined for leptospiral infection by renoculture and serological methods. Of the 1749 animals caught 702 were examined by renoculture method and 626 were tested by microagglutination-lysis. The dominant animals species caught were Microtus arvalis (672 animals) and Apodemus agrarius (552 animals). Of the 115 strains of leptospires isolated the dominant serotypes were L. grippotyphosa (40) and L. pomona (35). Five strains of L. sejroe, 9 strains of L. australis, 1 strain of L. bataviae and 25 undetermined strains were isolated, the infection rate ranging from 3 to 32%. Serologic...
Short communications. A case of cutaneous leishmaniasis with the isolation of the parasite.
M Giboda, M Maloveská
Folia Parasitologica 29[2] 183 (1982)
Cutaneous leishmaniasis of the zoonotic, rural type caused by Leishmania major was dignosed in a Czechoslovak citizen returning from Iraq. a Leishmania strain was isolated for the first time in Czechoslovakia from the skin lesion on the right forearm of the patient. No treatment was necessary because spontaneous healing of the lesion was well under way.
The migration of larvae of Toxascaris leonina (Linstow, 1909) in experimentally infected white mice.
J Prokopic, V Figallová
Folia Parasitologica 29[3] 233 (1982)
The migration of larvae of Toxascaris leonina was studied in 168 white mice. The larvae were found in lungs of 96% of infected mice on days 4-135, in genital organs (84%), intestinal mucosa (81%) and skeletal muscles (100%) on day 10 post infection. The maximum number of larvae were detected in intercostal muscles on day 105 post infection.

Detection of Giardia intestinalis in duodenal aspirate and in the stool.
M Giboda, T Hildebrand
Folia Parasitologica 30[2] 181-183 (1983)
Compared was the detection of Giardia intestinalis in duodenal contents and in the stool. During endoscopic examination duodenal contents were recovered by means of a tube attached to the mucosa and by aspiration from the region of pars verticalis. In 102 persons, duodenal and stool examinations revealed four and five cases of Giardia infection, respectively. The results showed that both diagnostic methods are equivalent and demonstrated that parasitologic examinations of patients suffering from dyspeptic disorders are very useful.
Changes in the blood picture of white mice experimentally infected with various species of ascarids.
J Prokopic, V Figallová
Folia Parasitologica 30[2] 185-188 (1983)
The blood picture was studied in white mice experimentally infected with Ascaris suum, Toxocara cati, and Toxascaris leonina. In mice infected with A. suum, maximum number (17%) of eosinophiles occurred on day 28 p.i. In mice infected with T. cati, the eosinophilia increased already from the first day after infection, reaching the maximum (26%) on day 21 p.i. In mice infected with T. leonina, the eosinophilia increased from day 7 to day 28 p.i. and a slightly increased number of eosinophiles persisted during the whole experiment.
The distribution of Angiostrongylus cantonensis (Chen) in the central nervous system of laboratory rats.
L S Limaye, M K Bhopale, D M Renapurkar, K D Sharma
Folia Parasitologica 30[3] 281-284 (1983)
The distribution of preadult Angiostrongylus cantonensis helminths in various regions of the central nervous system of rats, infected with varying doses of larvae, was studied. A dose of 10 000 larvae proved to be lethal; the rats showed paralytic symptoms and loss of vision prior to death. A very low dose of 15 larvae also proved to be infective to the central nervous system. Incidence of eye involvement was observed in two rats receiving a dose of 500 larvae. Maximum number of helminths were recovered from the cerebral hemisphere region but their involvement per unit weight of the tissue was found to be highest in the region of medulla oblongata.
A survey of the results of studies on Gyrodactylus katharineri Malmberg, 1964 (Gyrodactylidae: Monogenea).
R Ergens
Folia Parasitologica 30[4] 319 (1983)
The hitherto obtained information on Gyrodactylus katharineri Malmberg, 1964 is summarized, concerning particularly its localization, host species spectrum and distribution in Eurasia. The morphogenesis and morphological-metrical variability of hard parts of opisthaptor are dealt with in detail. The pathogenicity of the parasite is stressed and methods for its control in fish-breeding farms are proposed.

Folia Parasitologica 31[1] 69-77 (1984)
The paper presents a survey of flea species found in the studied territory, together with data on their distribution, host relationship, seasonal fluctuations of their numbers and possible role in tick-borne encephalitis epizootiology.
Amblyospora indicola sp. n., a microsporidian pathogen of the mosquito culex sitiens.
J Vávra, M G Bai, K N Panicker
Folia Parasitologica 31[3] 207 (1984)
A new microsporidian species Amblyospora indicola sp. n., parasite of fat body cells of Culex sitiens larvae, is described. Separation of diplokaryon nuclei occurs during the early sporulation phase of this microsporidian followed by the appearance of synaptonemal complexes in the nuclei suggesting that the first sporogonial division is meiotic.

Folia Parasitologica 31[4] 371-373 (1984)
The antimalarial drugs chloroquine and pyrimethamine were observed to afford protection to mice treated with these agents. This protection was observed in mice when given a subsequent challenge infection after they had been radically cured of P. b. yoelii infection.

Purification of cystozoites of Sarcocystis sp. by the chromatographic gel Spheron.
B Koudela
Folia Parasitologica 32[4] 295-302 (1985)
Cystozoites of Sarcocystis sp. isolated from beef muscles were purified by elution through Spheron chromatographic gel. Using the number of cystozoites recovered and the purity of suspension as criteria, the effect of length of gel column, rate of elution, and ionic strength of the eluent was evaluated. The optimum purity was achieved at the elution rate of 10 ml/min and column length of 100 mm. The recovery of cystozoites (38-56%) was in correlation to the ionic strength of the eluent. Of the current isotonic solutions, Tyrode's solution was found to be the best eluent. Preliminary assays with different coccidia indicate that the method could be used...
Congenital toxoplasmosis in premature twins.
D Sibalić, O Djurković-Djaković, R Nikolić
Folia Parasitologica 33[1] 1-6 (1986)
In the course of the study "Toxoplasmosis and Prematurity" 330 blood samples from twins were examined. Our findings in a series of 21 premature twins (maternal sera were also examined) are reported in this paper. Toxoplasma antibodies were detected by the Sabin-Feldman test and specific IgM antibodies by the Remington test. The classical form of congenital toxoplasmosis was present in five pairs of twins, while toxoplasmosis was subclinical at birth in both twins of three pairs. The pattern of disease varied very much in seven pairs of twins. In one twin of two pairs signs of disease were present, while his cotwin appeared unaffected but with strongly...
