Coccidia of genus Caryospora (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from the long nosed vine snake, Ahaetulla nasuta (Serpentes: Colubridae: Boiginae) from southern India, with a description of C. veselyi sp. n.
David Modrý, Břetislav Koudela
Folia Parasitologica 45[2] 167-169 (1998)
Faecal examination of the long nosed vine snake Ahaetulla nasuta Lacépède, 1789 revealed two species of caryosporan coccidia. The morphology of one species fits well with a description of Caryospora ahaetullae Modrý et Koudela, 1994, the second is a previously undescribed species. Oocysts of Caryospora veselyi sp. n. were spherical, 18.9 (16.5-21.5) µm in diameter, with pitted and brownish oocyst wall about 1.5 µm thick. An irregular polar granule about 2.0 × 1.0 µm was observed in 35% of the oocysts examined. Sporocysts were octozoic, ovoidal to ellipsoidal, 13.7 (13.0-15.5) × 10.3 (9.0-11.0) µm with a shape index 1.3...

Hooi Hoon Ang, Kit Lam Chan, Joon Wah Mak
Folia Parasitologica 45[3] 196-198 (1998)
Five Malaysian isolates of the protozoan Plasmodium falciparum Welch were cultured in vitro following the method of Trager and Jensen (1976, 1977) and subsequently cloned using the limiting dilution method of Rosario (1981). Thirty clones were obtained and were later characterized against schizontocidal drugs, chloroquine, mefloquine and quinine, using the modified in vitro microtechnique. Results showed that these local isolates were heterogenous and most of the clones exhibited similar pattern of susceptibility as their parent isolate except for ST 168 clone and two ST 195 clones that were sensitive but two ST 165 clones, two ST 168 clones and five...
Life cycle of Ascocotyle (Phagicola) angeloi (Digenea: Heterophyidae) in the Neotropical Region
Margarita Ostrowski de Núñez
Folia Parasitologica 45[3] 199-204 (1998)
Stages of the life cycle of Ascocotyle (Phagicola) angeloi Travassos, 1928 were experimentally obtained, from cercariae from naturally infected Littoridina castellanosae (Gaillard) collected in artificial ponds in the Zoological Garden of Buenos Aires. Metacercariae were found encysted mainly in muscles and ovary, but also in other parts of the body of naturally and experimentally infected fish Jenynsia lineata (Jenyns) (Atheriniformes: Jenynsidae). Adults were obtained experimentally from chicks and mice. Ascocotyle (Phagicola) angeloi, redescribed in the present paper, is distinguished from other species of the subgenus by the two rows of oral spines,...

Folia Parasitologica 45[3] 230-232 (1998)
Maritrema orensensis sp. n. (Digenea: Microphallidae) from Balneario Orense, Buenos Aires province, Argentina, is described. Adults of M. orensensis were collected from the intestine of the kelp gull Larus dominicanus Lichtenstein, 1823 (Aves: Laridae) and differ from adults of other related species, principally, in the shorter intestinal caeca and the incomplete ring of vitelline follicles.
Redescription of Rhabdochona anguillae (Nematoda: Rhabdochonidae), a parasite of eel, Anguilla anguilla, in Europe
Aurélia M. Saraiva, František Moravec
Folia Parasitologica 45[3] 233-238 (1998)
The nematode Rhabdochona anguillae Spaul, 1927, a specific intestinal parasite of the European eel, Anguilla anguilla (L.), is redescribed and illustrated from specimens collected from eels of the Sousa River, northern Portugal (prevalence 20%, intensity 2-13). The species is characterized by the presence of 14 anterior teeth in the prostom, small non-bifurcate deirids, absence of lateral preanal papillae, by the length (0.460-0.660 and 0.130-0.150 mm) and the shape of spicules, fairly large (0.041-0.054 × 0.025-0.030 mm) mature eggs without filaments, and by the bluntly pointed to rounded tip of the tail. Its morphological features are discussed in...
Antigens of the sheep scab mite Psoroptes ovis
Kamburapola Gamarallage Indrananda Jayawardena, Agi Heller-Haupt, Ralpha Martin Woodland, Mavelikara Godavarma Raja Varma
Folia Parasitologica 45[3] 239-244 (1998)
Sheep scab caused by the mite Psoroptes ovis (Hering) is a highly contagious disease of sheep. As a first step in developing a mite-derived vaccine for controlling the disease, the soluble antigens in mite extracts which induce an immune response in sheep were identified by electrophoretic and immunoblotting techniques. At least 22 proteins were present in P. ovis extracts as revealed by Coomassie Blue staining. Mite-infested sheep serum recognised six antigenic bands in the extracts with approximate relative molecular weights ranging from 12 to 183 kDa. A deeply staining band at 31.2 kDa and another at 41.8 kDa are of particular diagnostic value....

Changes in the personality profile of young women with latent toxoplasmosis
Jaroslav Flegr, Jan Havlíček
Folia Parasitologica 46[1] 22-28 (1999)
Latent toxoplasmosis is the most widespread parasite infection in developed and developing countries. The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection varies mostly between 20 to 80% in different territories. This form of toxoplasmosis is generally considered to be asymptomatic. Recently published results, however, suggest that the personality profiles of infected subjects differ from those of uninfected controls. These results, however, were obtained on non-standard populations (biologists or former acute toxoplasmosis patients). Here we studied the personality profiles of 191 young women tested for anti-Toxoplasma immunity during gravidity....

Entamoeba histolytica: surface proteolytic activity and its relationship with in vitro virulence
Luz María Araiza-Orozco, Eva Edilia Avila, María de Lourdes Muñoz, Sergio Arias-Negrete
Folia Parasitologica 46[3] 161-167 (1999)
We determined the surface-associated proteolytic activity in three Entamoeba histolytica Schaudinn, 1903 strains (monoxenic HM1, axenic HM1, and HK9) of known virulence and its relationship with collagenase activity. Both activities were also determined in axenic HM1 amoebae trophozoites which were sensitive and resistant to complement-mediated lysis. Surface proteolytic activity was determined in glutaraldehyde-fixed E. histolytica trophozoites, which degraded the insoluble substrate, hide powder azure, and cleaved the human immunoglobulin G heavy chain in a time-dependent fashion, at neutral pH, in presence of 2-mercaptoethanol as...
Globidia infection in the gut of an Australian gecko Heteronotia binoei
Ilan Paperna
Folia Parasitologica 46[3] 175-178 (1999)
Globidia, at various stages of differentiation were found in histological sections prepared from the digestive tract of an Australian gecko Heteronotia binoei Gray, 1845. The globidia - seemingly in hypertrophic endothelial host cells - were located in the lamina propria of the small intestine, and were enclosed in a parasitophorous vacuole with various stages of differentiating meronts. When fully matured, globidia contained hundreds of merozoites within their parasitophorous vacuole.
Aspects of the morphology and a review of the taxonomic status of three species of the genus Chonopeltis (Crustacea: Branchiura) from the Orange-Vaal and South West Cape River Systems, South Africa
Liesl L. Van As, Jo G. Van As
Folia Parasitologica 46[3] 221-228 (1999)
Comparative scanning electron microscopical studies were carried out on Chonopeltis australis Boxshall, 1976 collected from different localities in the Orange-Vaal River System in South Africa and on material of Chonopeltis minutus Fryer, 1977 and Chonopeltis australissimus Fryer, 1977 on loan from the Albany Museum, Grahamstown. This elucidates the fine structure of morphological features, which are of taxonomic importance and illustrates the significance of the copulatory structures on the legs as a taxonomic tool. It was also concluded that C. australissimus is the same as C. minutus, with C. australissimus...

Comparative studies on carbohydrates of several myxosporean parasites of fish using lectin histochemical methods
Pilar Muñoz, Oswaldo Palenzuela, Pilar Alvarez-Pellitero, Ariadna Sitjà-Bobadilla
Folia Parasitologica 46[4] 241-247 (1999)
A histochemical study using lectin methods was performed on myxosporean parasites from vastly different fish hosts from marine and fresh waters. Six biotinylated lectins were used (WGA, SBA, BS-I, Con-A, UEA-I and SNA). The binding pattern of Con-A and WGA revealed the presence of mannose and/or glucose, and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine respectively, in polar capsules and valves of most of the myxosporea assayed. Thus, chitin may be present in polar capsules and/or valves of myxosporean spores. The BS-I binding pattern showed the presence of α-D-galactose and/or N-acetyl-D-galactosamine residues in polar capsules of Kudoa sp., Zschokkella...

Hypobiosis induction alters the protein profile of Ostertagia ostertagi (Nematoda: Trichostrongylidae)
Marcela C. Dopchiz, Alberto E. Parma, César A. Fiel
Folia Parasitologica 47[2] 135-140 (2000) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2000.026
The appearance of variations in the protein profile of Ostertagia ostertagi (Stiles, 1892) infective larvae (L3), which were induced by hypobiosis triggering factors, was evaluated by means of SDS-PAGE and densitometric analysis. Area integration analyses of their protein profiles was carried out between 66 and 77 kDa. Important quantitative variations were identified in the protein levels of the induced larvae, where a 5.25 fold increase compared to the control was observed. Two 75.4 and 70 kDa protein bands were found which exceeded the control profile by 4.5 and 44 fold, respectively. This fact suggests that the changes brought...

Redescription of Proteocephalus bagri and P. rhamdiae (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae), parasites of Rhamdia quelen (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) from South America, with comments on morphological variation
Alicia A. Gil de Pertierra
Folia Parasitologica 49[1] 55-66 (2002) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2002.012
The pimelodid fish Rhamdia quelen (Quoy et Gaimard, 1824) in South America harbours two species of proteocephalid cestodes, Proteocephalus bagri Holcman-Spector et Mañé-Garzón, 1988 and P. rhamdiae Holcman-Spector et Mañé-Garzón, 1988. These species are redescribed based on a detailed morphological study, supported by multivariate analysis (principal component analysis). Features distinguishing these species are: (1) the shape of proglottides, (2) the mean number of testes, (3) the topography of vitelline follicles, (4) the thickness of internal longitudinal musculature, (5) the mean number of uterine branches, (6)...
The enzymes of glycogen and trehalose catabolism from Hysterothylacium aduncum (Nematoda: Anisakidae)
Krystyna Żółtowska, Elżbieta Łopieńska, Jerzy Rokicki, Małgorzata Dmitryjuk
Folia Parasitologica 49[3] 239-242 (2002) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2002.043
The activity of α-amylase, glucoamylase, maltase, trehalase, glycogen phosphorylase and trehalose phosphorylase was measured in extracts from larval and adult Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802), parasitic nematode of marine fish. The content of glycogen and trehalose in the worm's body was also determined. Both the hydrolytic and phosphorolytic paths of sugar decomposition are present in H. aduncum. In the larvae glycogen was utilised mainly via the hydrolytic path. In the adults the activities of phosphorolytic enzymes were higher than in the larvae. In both stages the activity of trehalose phosphorylase is present. In adult...

František Moravec, Brian L. Fredensborg, A. David M. Latham, Robert Poulin
Folia Parasitologica 50[2] 109-114 (2003) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2003.019
Previously undescribed third-stage larvae of two species of Spirurida were found in the haemocoel of the stalk-eyed mud crab Macrophthalmus hirtipes (Heller) (Ocypodidae) in New Zealand. Examinations by light and scanning electron microscopy showed that the larger larvae (about 7 mm long) belonged to a species of Ascarophis van Beneden, 1871 (Cystidicolidae), the genus including parasites of fishes, whereas the smaller larvae (about 4-5 mm long) belonged to the Acuariidae, a family with species parasitic as adults mostly in aquatic birds. In a sample of 82 specimens of M. hirtipes collected in July 2002 from Papanui Inlet, on Otago...

Folia Parasitologica 50[3] 202-210 (2003) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2003.036
Three species of Magnibursatus Naidenova, 1969 are described from marine teleosts: M. skrjabini (Vlasenko, 1931), the type species of the genus, from the gobiid Zosterisessor ophiocephalus on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast; M. bartolii sp. n. from the sparid Boops boops off the Atlantic coast of Spain; and M. minutus sp. n. from the gobiid Neogobius eurycephalus on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. M. bartolii differs from all other Magnibursatus species in its larger sinus-sac (length >250 µm, width >150 µm) and the more posterior location of testes. This species is also...
Transmission electron microscopy of intra-tegumental sensory receptors in the forebody of Crepidostomum metoecus (Digenea: Allocreadiidae)
Zdeňka Žďárská, Jana Nebesářová
Folia Parasitologica 50[3] 215-219 (2003) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2003.038
In the adult fish trematode Crepidostomum metoecus (Braun, 1900), four types of sensory receptors were observed inside the forebody tegument and one type beneath the tegument basal lamina. Two types of sensory receptors extend through the thickness of tegument and have a free cilium inside a pit (types I and II). Two types (III and IV) are nonciliate and entirely intra-tegumental in location. Type IV receptor with large horizontal and thin vertical rootlets was described earlier in aspidogastreans only. Below the basal lamina, nerve endings in close association with muscle fibres, comparable with those in the Aspidogastrea, were detected.

\"Polar vesicles\" of microsporidia are mitochondrial remnants (\"mitosomes\")?
Jiří Vávra
Folia Parasitologica 52[1/2] 193-195 (2005) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2005.024
Conventional transmission electron microscopy was used to localise double-membrane vesicles probably representing mitochondrial remnants ("mitosomes") in four species of microsporidia. Very few such vesicles were found dispersed throughout cytoplasm with no relationship to other cell organelles. Several double-membrane vesicles per ultrathin section, however, occurred regularly close to the nuclear spindle plaque. These vesicles are identical with the "polar vesicles" typically associated with the microsporidian spindle plaque and known since 1971. The reason for mitosome accumulation near the spindle plaque is unknown. Possibly the spindle plaques...
Morphological characterisation of Paranoplocephala bairdi (Schad, 1954) (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) in heather voles Phenacomys spp. and tree voles Arborimus spp., and related species in voles and lemmings (Muridae: Arvicolinae)
Voitto Haukisalmi, Robert L. Rausch, Heikki Henttonen
Folia Parasitologica 52[4] 311-321 (2005) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2005.043
The taxonomical status of Paranoplocephala bairdi (Schad, 1954)-like cestodes (Anoplocephalidae) in heather voles Phenacomys spp. and tree voles Arborimus spp. (Muridae: Arvicolinae) and their discrimination from five related species of Paranoplocephala is assessed using uni- and multivariate morphometrics. The analyses support the independent status and conspecificity of specimens from Phenacomys spp. and Arborimus spp., and P. bairdi is therefore suggested to be a host-specialist species of heather and tree voles with a wide geographical distribution in North America. A redescription is presented for...
