New data on the morphology and systematic status of Klossinemella iheringi (Nematoda: Atractidae) from an Amazonian serrasalmid fish
Moravec F, Thatcher VE
Folia Parasitologica 44[1] 48-54 (1997)
The morphology of the nematode Klossinemella iheringi (Travassos, Artigas et Pereira, 1928), the type species of the genus Klossinemella Costa, 1961, was studied using specimens collected from the serrasalmid fish, Mylesinus paraschomburgkii Jegu, Santos et Ferreira, 1989 (a new host record), from the Trombetas River, Para State, Brazil, by both light and scanning electron microscopy. This species was also recorded from the Jari River (Para State), the Uatuma, Pitinga and Capucapu Rivers (Amazonas State), and the Araguari River (Amapa State). An examination by SEM made it possible, for the first time in this genus, to study in detail the structure...

Attempts to immunize chickens against Cryptosporidium baileyi with C-parvum oocysts and Paracox(TM) vaccine
Sreter T, Hornok S, Varga I, Bekesi L, Szell Z
Folia Parasitologica 44[1] 77-80 (1997)
To study the possibility of immunization against Cryptosporidium baileyi Current, Upton et Haynes, 1986 with the attenuated anticoccidial vaccine, Paracox(TM) and oocysts of C. parvum Tyzzer, 1912, chickens were inoculated orally with either 3 x 10(3) vaccine oocysts or 8 x 10(5) C. baileyi or C. parvum oocysts at 1 week of age. The inoculation with Paracox(TM) vaccine and C. parvum oocysts was repeated at 2 and 3 weeks of age. Uninfected birds served as controls. All animals with the exception of one uninfected group were challenged orally with either 8 x 10(5) C. baileyi or 3 x 10(5) Eimeria tenella Railliet et Lucet, 1891 oocysts at 4 weeks of age....
Development of sporozoites of the piscine coccidium Eimeria (sensu lato) vanasi in gut intraepithelial lymphocyte-like cells
Vilenkin M, Paperna I
Folia Parasitologica 44[2] 91-98 (1997)
Fifty-day-old fry of tilapia hybrids (Oreochromis aureus x niloticus) were placed in aquaria containing sediment with oocysts of Eimeria (sensu lato) vanasi Landsberg et Paperna. In the first 29 h after exposure sporulated oocysts in the stomach and free sporozoites in the gut could be found in examined fish. By 7 to 56 h after exposure, sporozoites, with their characteristic crystalloid body, were detected in intraepithelial lymphocyte-like and other leucocyte-like cells, but never in the epithelial cells. Infected cells were confined to the epithelial layer and did not enter the lamina propria. Within this time, some of the sporozoites divided by...
Estimation of genetic affinities between sympatric populations of Rhipicephalus pusillus ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) by analysis of cuticular hydrocarbons
EstradaPena A, Osacar JJ, Calvete C, EstradaPena R
Folia Parasitologica 44[2] 147-154 (1997)
Genetic distances and phylogenetic clustering are calculated for sympatric populations of Rhripicephalus pusillus (Gil Collado) 1939 ticks, using cuticular hydrocarbon analysis and several statistical tools (stepwise discriminant analysis, Nei's genetic distance using different sets of compounds, and Cavalli-Sforza's Brownian motion model). Discriminant analysis on genic frequencies permits the detection of the most ancient geographic relationships between the populations, while the genetic distance method determines current evolutive affinities. However, methods based on quantitative estimation provide a poor resolution. Genetic distances are very...
Helminth ectoparasites of sillaginid fishes (Perciformes: Percoidei) have low species richness
Hayward CJ
Folia Parasitologica 44[3] 173-187 (1997)
Just nineteen species of ectoparasitic helminths were found in a survey of over 1,500 individuals of 26 species of sillaginid fishes in the Indo-west Pacific. A twentieth worm is known only from the literature; a twenty-first, also known only from the literature, is considered a doubtful record. Fifteen of the twenty worms are branchial monogeneans, one is a monogenean of the pharyngeal plates, one is an ectoparasitic digenean living under the scales, and three are leeches of the mouth cavity and fins. The most common monogeneans were diplectanids (Diplectanum spp. and Monoplectanum spp.) and microcotylids (Polylabris spp.), each with five recently...
Host-finding behaviour of Cotylurus flabelliformis (Trematoda: Strigeidae) cercariae for snail hosts
Campbell RA
Folia Parasitologica 44[3] 199-204 (1997)
Cercariae of Cotylurus flabelliformis (Faust, 1917) were individually tested in 6 experiments for evidence of chemoattraction to snail hosts, host-specificity, and rate of dispersal. Five species of snails were tested: Lymnaea stagnalis appressa Say, 1821, Stagnicola elodes (Say, 1821), Physelia gyrina (Say, 1821), Planorbella trivolvis (Say, 1817), and Oxyloma retusum (Lea, 1834). The data substantiate that cercariae of C. flabelliformis have a chemo-positive attraction to undetermined diffusable substances from snails, show host-specificity, and do not attack the snail that produced them. Cercarial response time was significantly influenced by cercarial...
Margolisiella kabatai gen et sp n (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae), a parasite of native littleneck clams, Protothaca staminea, from British Columbia, Canada, with a taxonomic revision of the coccidian parasites of bivalves (Mollusca: Bivalvia)
Desser SS, Bower SM
Folia Parasitologica 44[4] 241-247 (1997)
Two of 98 native littleneck clams, Protothaca staminea Conrad, from Cooper's Cove, Sooke Basin were infected with an eimeriorin coccidian parasite. Merogonic, gamontogonic and sporogonic development were observed in renal tubular epithelial cells. Sporulation of the oocysts occurred within the host. Mature oocysts were spherical mean 41 mu m (range 30-44), and contained about 32 subspherical sporocysts (9 x 10 mu m), each of which contained 4 sporozoites. Spherical 19 mu m (18-20), cyst-like structures and smaller multinucleate bodies, some of which resembled sporocysts, were also seen.A review of the coccidian parasites of bivalves led to the erection...
Some factors which influence the in vitro maintenance of Anisakis simplex (Nematoda)
Iglesias L, Valero A, Adroher FJ
Folia Parasitologica 44[4] 297-301 (1997)
Several culture media as well as some factors that may affect the in vitro development of the nematode Anisakis simplex Rudolphi, 1809 have been studied. After testing six media and four temperatures, the conditions for the in vitro culture selected were as follows: RPMI-1640 + 20% (v/v) heat-inactived fetal bovine serum or Meyer's M3 (without agar) media, at 37 degrees C, under 5% CO2 in air atmosphere, and renewal of the medium twice a week. The average survival rates of the larvae were significantly increased when the pH of the culture medium was increased (from 4.0 to 7.2) or decreased (from 7.2 to 4.0) after L-3 to L-4 moulting. The length of...
Fate of infective larvae of Brugia malayi in the peritoneal cavity of Mastomys natalensis and Meriones unguiculatus
Murthy PK, Murthy PR, Tyagi K, Chatterjee RK
Folia Parasitologica 44[4] 302-304 (1997)
The fate of intraperitoneally inoculated infective third-stage larvae (L-3) of the nematode Brugia malayi Lichtenstein and the status of the peritoneal macrophage function were investigated in the susceptible rodent hosts Mastomys natalensis Roberts and Meriones unguiculatus Milne-Edwards (jird). Jirds and M, natalensis were inoculated intraperitoneally with 125 and 250 L-3 and the worm burden and peritoneal macrophage function in the two species were compared at different days post-inoculation (DPI), None of the infected M, natalensis had adult worms in the peritoneal cavity; very few degenerating L-3 surrounded by peritoneal cells were recovered...
A new species of Nothobomolochus (Copepoda: Bomolochidae) parasitic on Engraulis anchoita (Pisces: Engraulidae) from Argentina
Timi JT, Sardella NH
Folia Parasitologica 44[4] 305-308 (1997)
Nothobomolochus cresseyi sp, n. (Copepoda: Bomolochidae), a parasite from gills of the engraulid fish Engraulis anchoita Hubbs et Marini (Pisces: Engraulidae) from the coast of Argentina, is described and illustrated. The new species can be distinguished from other species of Nothobomolochus Vervoort, 1962 by the following combination of characters: three modified setae on the base of the antennule similar in length to the plumose setae, the nature of the armature of the third segment of the fourth endopod and the length and width of the thoracic somites 2 to 4 decreasing gradually. The new species represents the First record of this genus for Argentina.
Vexillifera expectata sp. n. and other non-encysting amoebae isolated from organs of freshwater fish
Dykova I, Lom J, Machackova B, Peckova H
Folia Parasitologica 45[1] 17-26 (1998)
Four strains of non-encysting amoebae were isolated from organs of freshwater fishes and characterized using light and electron microscope. Morphology of three clonal strains was consistent with amoebae which had already been described from water habitats. Two strains, one isolated from kidney tissue of common goldfish, Carassius auratus (Linnaeus, 1758), and the second one from brain of chub, Leuciscus cephalus Linnaeus, 1758, were identified with Vannella platypodia (Glaser, 1912) Page, 1976. Both strains were identical, except for the length of glycostyles. The strain isolated from the liver of perch, Perca fluviatilis (Linnaeus, 1758), was assigned...

Prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in AIDS patients with diarrhoea in Santa Maria Hospital, Lisbon
Olga Matos, Ana Tomás, Pedro Aguiar, David Casemore, Francisco Antunes
Folia Parasitologica 45[2] 163-166 (1998)
We report the findings of a longitudinal observational study on HIV-infected patients grouped by presumed transmission group, who had diarrhoea. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of and factors associated with Cryptosporidium infection on these patients. Modified formol-ether concentration followed by modified Ziehl-Neelsen and phenol-auramine/carbol-fuchsin staining techniques were used to identify Cryptosporidium from 465 patients. Cryptosporidiosis was reported in 36/465 (8% and 95% confidence interval 6, 10) patients. Of the positive patients 30 (83%) were men and 6 (17%) women. Prevalence of infection was higher among HIV-seropositive...
