Unikaryon montanum sp. n. (Protista: Microspora), a new pathogen of the spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus (Coleoptera: Scolytidae)

Jaroslav Weiser, Rudolf Wegensteiner, Zdeněk Žižka

Folia Parasitologica 45[3] 191-195 (1998)

Unikaryon montanum sp. n. infects the fat body, muscle, Malpighian tubules and ovaries of adult Ips typographus L. The development is haplokaryotic, with separate nuclei during the schizogony and sporogony. Sporonts have the cellular envelope with added layer of electron dense material. Two types of spores are formed: small broad-oval primary spores, 1.5 × 1.0 µm, with warty surface of spore wall, uninucleate, with isofilar polar filament in 5/6 coils and elongated-oval environmental spores, 0.8-1 × 2 µm, with warty spore wall attenuated at the anterior end, uninucleate, with spore polar filament in 8 coils. Both types have a dual polaroplast...

Spermatozoa and spermiogenesis in the monocotylid Heterocotyle capricornensis (Platyhelminthes, Monogenea, Monopisthocotylea), including observations of aberrant folding and fusing of spermatozoa in one individual

Nikki A. Watson, Leslie A. Chisholm

Folia Parasitologica 45[3] 211-220 (1998)

Spermatozoa of the monogenean Heterocotyle capricornensis Chisholm et Whittington, 1996 are long and filiform, comprising an elongate nucelus, probably a single elongate mitochondrion and two incorporated axonemes, one of which is shifted with respect to the other. The shift results in a region at each end of the sperm where only one axoneme is present, accompanied by the nucleus and mitochondrion at one end and the nucleus and/or mitochondrion at the other. By taking note of the direction of dynein arms on the axonemal doublet microtubules, each axoneme is identified and followed from beginning to end. No basal bodies remain in mature sperm but the...

Echinobothrium megacanthum sp. n. (Cestoda: Diphyllidea) from the eagle ray Myliobatis goodei (Chondrichthyes: Rajoidei) from the Patagonian shelf of Argentina

Verónica A. Ivanov, Ronald A. Campbell

Folia Parasitologica 45[3] 225-229 (1998)

A new species of Echinobothrium is described from the spiral intestine of the eagle ray Myliobatis goodei Garman, 1885 from the San Matías Gulf, Argentina. Echinobothrium megacanthum sp. n. is distinguished from all others by the following combination of characters: 27 large hooks per apical group, a continuous row of 12 hooklets on each lateral surface of the rostellum, 38-43 spines per row on the cephalic peduncle and 13-15 testes per segment. The new species is most similar to E. euzeti Campbell et Carvajal, 1980, E. mathiasi Euzet, 1951 and E. raschii Campbell et Andrade, 1997. Echinobothrium megacanthum can be differentiated from E. euzeti by...

Heliocotyle kartasi gen. et sp. n. (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) parasitic on Pteromylaeus bovinus (Euselachii: Myliobatinae) from Tunisia

Lassâd Neifar, Louis Euzet, Oum Kalthoum Ben Hassine

Folia Parasitologica 46[1] 29-32 (1999)

Nine Pteromylaeus bovinus (E. Geoffroy St. Hilaire) (Euselachii: Myliobatinae) from the Tunisian coast were examined for ectoparasites during 1995, 1996 and 1997. A monogenean found on the gills of seven host specimens is described as a new species and a new genus, Heliocotyle, is proposed to accomodate it. The presence of a single sclerotized haptoral structure on the dorsal surface of the haptor leads us to place this species in the Heterocotylinae Chisholm, Wheeler et Beverley-Burton, 1995. The genus Heliocotyle is characterized by a haptor with only one dorsal structure and seven loculi, six being subdivided by pseudosepta....

Redescription and life cycle of Gangesia parasiluri (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae), a parasite of the Far Eastern catfish Silurus asotus

Takeshi Shimazu

Folia Parasitologica 46[1] 37-45 (1999)

Gangesia parasiluri Yamaguti, 1934 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) is redescribed on the basis of adults obtained from the intestine of Silurus asotus Linnaeus (Teleostei: Siluridae) from Lake Suwa, Nagano Prefecture, central Japan. Its life cycle was studied in the field and laboratory. Rostellar hooks of the adults showed a wide variation in number, ranging from 35 to up to 57. Plerocercoids were found in the rectum of Chaenogobius urotaenia (Hilgendorf) and Rhinogobius brunneus (Temminck et Schlegel) (Teleostei: Gobiidae) from the same lake. Procercoids were formed in the haemocoel of Mesocyclops leuckarti (Claus)...

Larval development of Onchocamallanus bagarii (Nematoda: Camallanidae) in copepods

Nimai C. De, Rabindra N. Maity

Folia Parasitologica 46[1] 53-58 (1999)

Larval development of the nematode Onchocamallanus bagarii (Karve et Naik, 1951), recovered from the intestine of the fish Bagarius bagarius (Hamilton) was studied under laboratory conditions. The cyclopoid copepods Mesocyclops leuckarti (Claus) and M. crassus (Fischer) were infected with first-stage larvae from female uteri and maintained at temperatures 29-30°C. After being swallowed by the copepods, first-stage larvae burrow through the intestinal wall and reach the haemocoel of the copepods and there they grow and moult twice to attain the third and infective-stage. First-stage larvae become ensheathed after 65 hours...

Extraintestinal stages of coccidia in liver of Schneider\'s skink Eumeces schneideri (Sauria: Scincidae) from Northern Egypt

Břetislav Koudela, David Modrý

Folia Parasitologica 46[2] 99-102 (1999)

An extraintestinal coccidian parasite was identified in Schneider's skinks Eumeces schneideri Daudin, 1802. Numerous tissue cysts were found in melanomacrophage aggregations in the liver of six of ten examined skinks. No tissue cysts were found in other tissues. Tissue cysts were 22-26 × 9-13 µm and contained a single sporozoite. Sporozoites were 10-13 × 2-4 µm, and contained a single nucleus, homogeneous inclusion and PAS positive granules, and were surrounded by PAS negative, 1.5-3.0 µm thick cyst wall. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the tissue cyst wall was composed of granular material and the sporozoites...

Post-cyclic transmission in Pomphorhynchus laevis (Acanthocephala)

Clive R. Kennedy

Folia Parasitologica 46[2] 111-116 (1999)

A series of laboratory experiments was conducted to investigate the possibility of post-cyclic transmission in Pomphorhynchus laevis (Müller, 1776). Rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) were exposed to P. laevis in naturally infected Cottus gobio Linnaeus, Noemacheilus barbatulus (Linnaeus), Phoxinus phoxinus (Linnaeus) and Leuciscus cephalus (Linnaeus) and sacrificed one month after infection. Post-cyclic transmission was possible from all four species even though they came from three families and differed in respect of their status and suitability as hosts of P. laevis. There was no selection...

Ultrastructure of spermiogenesis of Phyllobothrium lactuca (Cestoda, Tetraphyllidea, Phyllobothriidae)

Aminata Sène, Cheikh Tidiane Bâ, Bernard Marchand

Folia Parasitologica 46[3] 191-198 (1999)

Spermiogenesis in Phyllobothrium lactuca Beneden, 1850 begins with the formation of a differentiation zone bordered by cortical microtubules and containing a nucleus and two centrioles separated by an intercentriolar body and disposed one in the prolongation of the other. Later, formation of flagellar buds, striated roots and a median cytoplasmic extension takes place. Each centriole gives rise to a flagellum that rotates and fuses with the median cytoplasmic extension. At this stage, arched membranes appear at the front of the differentiation zone. The nucleus elongates, becomes filiform and migrates between the striated roots into the spermatid....

Myleusnema brasiliense sp. n. (Nematoda: Kathlaniidae), a new intestinal parasite of the serrasalmid fish Myleus sp. in Brazil

František Moravec, Vernon E. Thatcher

Folia Parasitologica 46[3] 216-220 (1999)

A new kathlaniid nematode, Myleusnema brasiliense sp. n., is described from the intestine of a characoid fish, Myleus sp. (Serrasalmidae, Cypriniformes), from Brazil. It differs from the only other congeneric species Myleusnema bicornis Moravec et Thatcher, 1996 mainly in having an unseparated cephalic portion of the body, lips provided with flanges with numerous spike-like appendages, deirids situated more posteriorly, more numerous (8 pairs) subventral preanal papillae in the male, and distinctly longer spicules (1.58-1.70 mm). The species description is based on light microscopic and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observations.

Hemibranch preference by freshwater monogeneans a function of gill area, water current, or both?

Pablo A. Gutiérrez, Sergio R. Martorelli

Folia Parasitologica 46[4] 263-266 (1999)

Differences in the occurrence of monogeneans on lamellae of fish gill arches were observed in this study. These differences were attributed to variations in water current on the gill surfaces or to greater area of certain arches. Two computer simulation programs based on gill area and water current were written to generate parasite metapopulations with clumped patterns. The results obtained were compared with true distributions of selected freshwater monogenean taxa. The combination of both theoretical models (gill area and water current) had greater explanatory power than either of the models alone.

Polyplax guatemalensis sp. n. (Phthiraptera: Anoplura), a new sucking louse from Peromyscus grandis, a montane cloud forest rodent from Guatemala

Lance A. Durden, Ralph P. Eckerlin

Folia Parasitologica 48[1] 69-72 (2001) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2001.010

The adult male and female of Polyplax guatemalensis sp. n. are described from the sigmodontine murid rodent Peromyscus grandis Goodwin collected in the Reserva de Biosfera, Sierra de las Minas, Guatemala, at an elevation of 2,200 m. The new species extends the number of known native species of Polyplax in the New World to four with none of them recorded south of Panama. Polyplax guatemalensis is morphologically most closely related to Polyplax auricularis which parasitises a cluster of closely related New World sigmodontine rodents from Canada to Panama. These two species can be distinguished from all other known...

Psilolintonum lineatum (Linton, 1928) (Echinostomatoidea: Psilostomidae) re-allocated to Podocotyle (Allocreadioidea: Opecoelidae) on the basis of a re-examination of the type material

Aneta Kostadinova

Folia Parasitologica 48[2] 115-117 (2001) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2001.017

The type-material of Psilostomum lineatum Linton, 1928 was re-examined and identified as Podocotyle reflexa (Creplin, 1825). This re-allocation of the type and only species invalidates the genus Psilolintonum that is now considered a synonym of Podocotyle.

Carlos A. Rauque, Liliana G. Semenas, Gustavo P. Viozzi

Folia Parasitologica 49[2] 127-130 (2002) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2002.023

The aim of this study was to investigate the post-cyclic transmission of Acanthocephalus tumescens (von Linstow, 1896) from Galaxias maculatus Jenyns to Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum). Wild G. maculatus naturally infected with A. tumescens were fed to cultured rainbow trout, which were sacrificed at the second, third and fourth weeks post infection. Normally attached male and female acanthocephalans were recovered alive from the intestine of rainbow trout. Parasites survive at least four weeks post infection, growing and attaining full sexual maturity. Prevalence and mean intensity generally decreased after infection....

Sub-tegumental ventral fibres surrounding the vaginal opening of Entobdella soleae (van Beneden et Hesse,1864) Johnston, 1929 (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea: Capsalidae)

Graham C. Kearn

Folia Parasitologica 53[1] 71-72 (2006) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2006.007

The distribution of F-actin in the monogenean Entobdella soleae (van Beneden et Hesse, 1864) Johnston, 1929 (Platyhelminthes: Capsalidae) was revealed by staining paraformaldehyde-fixed specimens with FITC-labelled phalloidin. On the ventral surface on the left side of the body, just posterior to the pharynx, a concentrically arranged array of fluorescent fibres was observed, following a circular path around the tiny ventral opening of the vagina. It is assumed that this asymmetrically placed array of actin fibres is contractile and the possible role of these fibres in the assimilation of sperm from an attached spermatophore into the vagina...
