Appendiceal enterobiasis--its incidence and relationships to appendicitis.

J Sterba, M Vlcek

Folia Parasitologica 31[4] 311-318 (1984)

An evaluation was made of a bioptic material (21,916 appendices recovered from 1965 to 1974), in order to disclose relationships of the incidence of Enterobius vermicularis and the origin of appendicitis. A separate evaluation was made of a set of appendectomies (10,619 cases--from 1961 to 1970) for the purpose of detecting changes in pin worm-infested appendices by means of histological methods (683 cases). E. vermicularis was found in 6.03% of appendices. Included in our histological examination was a search for granulomas and eosinophile infiltrations. The former occurred in 1.14% of pin worm-infested appendices, the later in 1.74% and in 0.19%,...

Tissue reaction after subcutaneous injection of Taenia saginata oncospheres.

K Blazek, J Schramlová, J Danek

Folia Parasitologica 31[4] 319 (1984)

After subcutaneous injection of T. saginata oncospheres, a slight swelling is visible at the site of injection first after 13 days. Conspicuous projecting nodes appear after 3-4 weeks. Histological examinations of the site of injection revealed the following changes: On days 3 and 4 p.i.--edema, focal necrosis and haemorrhage, exudation of leukocytes, activation of monocytes and fibroblasts. On day 7 p.i.--in addition to edema and foci of eosinophiles, a striking activation of monocytes and fibroblasts, focal accumulation of macrophages, proliferation of blood capillaries and formation of collagen. On day 10 p.i.--eosinophiles and light macrophages...

Distribution of lyo- and desmo-glycogen in relation to growth and maturity of proglottids of Moniezia benedeni.

A Vinayakam

Folia Parasitologica 32[1] 67-71 (1985)

Lyo- and desmo-glycogen were estimated in relation to growth and maturity of proglottids of a cestode, Moniezia benedeni. Total and lyo-glycogen show an increasing trend from immature to mature region (i.e., from region 1 to 6) and the increased level seen in the 6th region is maintained up to the 9th region with a fall in the 10th (gravid) region. These results indicate that mature proglottids store more carbohydrate than immature and gravid proglottids. Desmo-glycogen showed no variation in different regions of the strobila. The percentage of lyo-glycogen to total carbohydrate reveals that most of the carbohydrate (85-93%) is stored in a labile form.

Pathology of the migration phase of Taenia hydatigena (Pallas, 1766) larvae.

K Blazek, J Schramlová, D Hulínská

Folia Parasitologica 32[2] 127 (1985)

The pathological picture of the migration phase of C. tenuicollis in pigs is characterized by a haemorrhagia within the liver parenchyma and under the liver surface. The haemorrhagia, which represents a migrational canal, is induced by the destruction of liver sinuses by migrating larvae. Approximately on day 10 p.i. a serofibrinous peritonitis occurs and free cysticerci appear in the exudate. On days 14-16 p.i. the exudative peritonitis may increase. The cysticerci are localized under the serosas or on them. On about day 10 p.i. even the pulmonary form of the disease may occur. On day 13 p.i. the cysticerci are present in the lumen of lung arteries...

Effects of low temperatures on larvae of the genus Trichinella.

D Hulínská, V Figallová, B Shaikenov

Folia Parasitologica 32[3] 211 (1985)

We examined the effect of an exposure to -25 degrees C (for 8 days) on the histochemistry and the fine structure of 30-day-old Trichinella larvae from muscle fibres of the diaphragm. The larvae of T. pseudospiralis and T. nelsoni were either destroyed in the muscle fibres, dead, eosinophile, or were not found. The structureless mass of a degenerating, changed sarcoplasm was highly AIP-active, and gave a weak positive reaction for SS-groups of proteins. The wall of the deformed capsule around T. nelsoni, and the cuticle of the larva, stained diffusely; it did not contain AM. In a few muscle fibres exposed to -25 degrees C, histochemical reactions of...

Mouse (Mus musculus) as intermediate host of Sarcocystis sp. from the goshawk (Accipiter gentilis).

L Kolárová

Folia Parasitologica 33[1] 15-19 (1986)

Sporocysts from the goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) were experimentally transferred to the mouse (Mus musculus). It was found that the goshawk is the host of one of the sarcosporidians inducing muscle sarcocystosis in mice. Thin-walled, sporulated oocysts expelled by the goshawk measured 16.5-19.0 X 12.0-13.0 micron. Those which measured 12.0-13.5 X 8.2-9.0 micron were widely elliptical, with rounded poles. No asexual reproduction of parasites was detected in the viscera of mice. The cysts started to appear in skeletal muscles on day 20 after oral infection with 10,000 or 100,000 sporocysts per mouse. The cysts measuring 15-630 X 18-65 micron contained...

Water snails as paratenic hosts of Hymenolepididae Fuhrmann, 1907 in Czechoslovakia.

B Rysavý

Folia Parasitologica 33[3] 219-226 (1986)

The distribution of cysticercoids of Hymenolepididae Fuhrmann, 1907 parasitizing water birds (Anseriformes and Ralliformes) in Czechoslovakia was studied. A total of 2970 snail specimens (429 Lymnaea stagnalis (L.), 531 L. ovata (Drap.), 1, 462 L. peregra (O. F. Müll.), 158 L. auricularia (L.), 262 Planorbis planorbis (L.) and 65 Viviparus viviparus (L.)) were examined for this purpose. Among them, 122 snails were infected with cysticercoids of 13 cestode species (Dicranotaenia coronula (Dujardin, 1845), Diorchis inflata (Rudolphi, 1810), D. nyrocae Yamaguti, 1935, D. ransomi Schultz, 1940, Diploposthe laevis (Bloch, 1782), Echinocotyle rosetteri Blanchard,...

Some features of the ecology of fleas inhabiting the nests of the suslik (Citellus citellus (L.)). I: Population dynamics, sex ratio, feeding, reproduction.

J Ryba, P Rödl, L Bartos, M Daniel, V Cerný

Folia Parasitologica 33[3] 265-275 (1986)

While studying the suslik fleas in artificial nests planted in free nature, significant changes in the population dynamics of N. setosa, C. simplex and C. orientalis (from the spring build up to the autumnal peak and the decrease of flea number until the next spring) were noted. The predominance of females in the spring period was recorded in N. setosa. Significant seasonal changes in the number of engorged females of N. setosa and C. simplex and of C. orientalis males (the increase of engorged specimens in the spring and summer) were demonstrated. A significant predominance of females with mature eggs in the spring and summer and their negligible...

Study of the properties of alkaline phosphatase in Taenia crassiceps (Zeder, 1800) cysticerci.

J Zenka, J Prokopic

Folia Parasitologica 33[3] 281-284 (1986)

The properties of alkaline phosphatase present in Taenia crassiceps cysticerci were studied. Approximately a half of the total activity was free and the remaining part was bound to membranes. Kinetic studies did not show any differences between the free and bound alkaline phosphatases. It was found that high substrate concentrations produced an inhibitory effect on the enzyme. This effect was much greater at lower pH. pH optimum changed with the concentration of the substrate.

Contribution to the knowledge of aerobic processes in Taenia crassiceps larvae (Zeder, 1800).

J Zenka, J Prokopic

Folia Parasitologica 33[4] 331-336 (1986)

Respiration of homogenates and isolated mitochondria of T. crassiceps larvae was measured. Respiration (about 70%) could be inhibited by cyanide, indicating that an important part is played by classical respiratory chain. When succinate was used as substrate, relatively low respiratory rates were measured, mitochondria showing higher affinity to NADH. Above a half of respiratory rate remained unchanged even at very low oxygen concentrations. Fumarate exhibited inhibitory activity on respiration of T. crassiceps mitochondria. Respiration in which NADH was used as substrate was twice as much more sensitive to inhibition by fumarate than respiration stimulated...

Demodex tauri sp. n. (Acari: Demodicidae), a new parasite of cattle.

V Bukva

Folia Parasitologica 33[4] 363 (1986)

A new species, Demodex tauri sp. n., is described in all stages of the life cycle from the hair follicles and ducts of the sebaceous glands on the eyelids of cattle in Czechoslovakia. It is compared with other demodicids described from cattle. Observations on the prevalence, habitat, and pathogenicity of the new species are presented.

Occurrence of Phyllodistomum umblae (Fabricius, 1780) in the ureters of coregonids of Lake Yli-Kitka in northeastern Finland.

R Rahkonen, E T Valtonen

Folia Parasitologica 34[2] 145-155 (1987)

380 whitefish (Coregonus sp.) and 260 vendace (Coregonus albula L.) were studied from Lake Yli-Kitka in northeastern Finland during 1980-1982. 33% of the whitefish and 38.5% of the vendace were infected with Phyllodistomum umblae (Fabricius, 1780), the average intensity of infection being 4.2 and 2.3 per infected fish, respectively. No clear seasonality was observed in either the prevalence and intensity of infection or in the level of maturation and the length of P. umblae in both fish species, which points to a continuous invasion and maturation of these trematodes. The prevalence and intensity of P. umblae infection was highest in the middle-sized...

Pathology of natural isosporosis in nursing piglets.

J Vítovec, B Koudela

Folia Parasitologica 34[3] 199 (1987)

In piglets suffering from natural coccidiosis, post-mortem examination showed that pathological changes induced by Isospora suis were evident from day 7 to day 14 of life, and particularly, by days 9 and 10. Macroscopically, the changes were manifest as enteritis varying from catarrhal to pseudomembraneous form. Microscopically, they consisted of more or less extensive atrophy of villi whose apical parts were necrotic, of metaplasia and erosion of epithelium. With the exception of duodenum and the adjoining sector of jejunum, the alterations were manifest along the entire small gut though intensity of lesions and incidence of endogenous stages of Isospora...
