Parasites of the recently established round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) and tubenose goby (Proterorhinus marmoratus) (Cottidae) from the St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair, Michigan, USA

Pronin NM, Fleischer GW, Baldanova DR, Pronina SV

Folia Parasitologica 44[1] 1-6 (1997)

Specimens of the recently established European round goby (Neogobius melanostomus Pallas, 1811) and tubenose goby (Proterorhinus marmoratus Pallas, 1811) were collected from different locations in the St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair, USA and were examined for parasites. Parasites were observed in 76% of the round gobies and 35% of the tubenose gobies. Four species of parasites in the gobies occur in the Black Sea watershed. Two of them have been reported in North America for the first time: Sphaeromyxa sevastopoli Naidenova, 1970 and Ichthyocotylurus pileatus (Rudolphi, 1802). Three parasite species found in the gobies are endemic to North America...

Endoparasitic helminths of the European eel, Anguilla anguilla, from four disconnected meanders from the rivers Leie and Scheldt in western Flanders, Belgium

Schabuss M, Konecny R, Belpaire C, Schiemer F

Folia Parasitologica 44[1] 12-18 (1997)

The endoparasitic helminth communities of the European eel, Anguilla anguilla (L.), were investigated in four meanders, cut off from the rivers Leie and Scheldt in western Flanders, Belgium. Six species of helminths (2 cestodes, 2 nematodes and 2 acanthocephalans) were found. The dominant parasite species was the nematode Anguillicola crassus (Kuwahara, Niimi et Itagaki, 1974) infecting 79% of the eel population with intensities up to 112 specimens per fish. At two localities no acanthocephalans could be found, whereas these parasites were very common at the other sites. The prevalence, mean intensity, intensity and abundance, their correlation to...

Carbohydrate-binding specificities and physico-chemical properties of lectins in various tissue of phlebotominae sandflies

Palanova L, Volf P

Folia Parasitologica 44[1] 71-76 (1997)

Physico-chemical properties and carbohydrate-binding specificity of hemagglutination activity (HA) were compared in tissue lysates and haemolymph of unfed and bloodfed females of five sandfly species. Sandfly gut lectins were found to be heat-labile, sensitive to dithiotreitol treatment, freezing/thawing procedures and were affected by divalent cations. The pH optimum of HA ranged between 7.0-7.5. Specificity of gut HA of all species studied was directed towards aminosugars and some glycoconjugates, mainly lipopolysaccharide from Escherichia coli K-235, heparin and fetuin. Gut HA of Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli, 1786) was strongly inhibited by lipophosphoglycan...

Amoebae isolated from organs of farmed tilapias, Oreochromis niloticus

Dykova I, Machackova B, Peckova H

Folia Parasitologica 44[2] 81-90 (1997)

Three amoeba species were isolated from 3 out of 193 farmed tilapias, Oreuchromis niloticus (L.), screened for the presence of free-living amoebae in parenchymatous organs. Hurtmannella vermiformis Page, 1967 and Rosculus ithacus Hawes, 1963 were isolated from the kidney tissue. The third strain isolated from the liver shared morphological features of Mayorella and Platyamoeha spp. and therefore its taxonomic position has not been determined as yet. Pathogenicity of cloned strain of H. vermiformis was proved in two fish hosts.

Isolation and characterization of cytosolic malate dehydrogenase from Trichomonas vaginalis

Drmota T, Tachezy J, Kulda J

Folia Parasitologica 44[2] 103-108 (1997)

Malate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.37.) (MDH) was purified to apparent homogeneity from the cytosolic fraction of the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis Donne. The four step purification included ion-exchange chromatography (DEAE-Sephacel and Q-Sepharose, elution with NaCl) and affinity chromatography (Reactive Red Agarose, elution with NADH and NaCl). The enzyme was purified about 132-fold (30.6% yield) to a specific activity of 352 units mg(-1). The K-m values determined at pH 7.8 (pH optimum from 7.5 to 8.3) for oxaloacetate and NADH were 16.2 mu M and 10.6 mu M, respectively. The MDH activity was inhibited by the substrate, decreasing to 50% at about...

A phylogenetic analysis by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis and multiprimer random amplified polymorphic DNA fingerprinting of the Leishmania genome project Friedlin reference strain

Anne-Laure Bañuls, Sylvain Brisse, Issa Sidibé, Sébastien Noël, Michel Tibayrenc

Folia Parasitologica 46[1] 10-14 (1999)

We have assessed the phylogenetic status of the Leishmania genome project Friedlin reference strain by MLEE and multiprimer RAPD including a set of 9 stocks representative of the main Leishmania species and of the whole genetic diversity of the Leishmania genus. To our knowledge, the detailed genetic characterization of the Friedlin strain has never been published before. As previously recorded (Tibayrenc et al. 1993), MLEE and RAPD data gave congruent phylogenetic results. The Friedlin reference strain was definitely attributed to Leishmania (Leishmania) major Yakimoff et Schokhor, 1914. Five specific RAPD...

Rhabdias agkistrodonis (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae): morphology, distribution and specificity

Yuriy I. Kuzmin

Folia Parasitologica 46[1] 59-66 (1999)

Morphology of adult parasitic hermaphrodites, free-living males and females, rhabditoid and infective larvae of Rhabdias agkistrodonis Sharpilo, 1976 is described. Adult parasites of the species differ from corresponding stage of other Rhabdias species from snakes in the presence of short cuticular needle on the tip of the tail. Free-living generation stages of R. agkistrodonis have typical rhabditoid morphology. Homogonic infective larvae differ from heterogonic ones in the shape of stoma and oesophagus. Three new hosts: Halys viper (Agkistrodon halys) (Pallas) from Altaiskii Krai (Russia), Okinawa habu (Trimeresurus...

Evidence of host blood feeding by the monogenean, Ancyrocephalus mogurndae (Monogenea: Ancyrocephalidae) from the gills of the mandarin fish, Siniperca chuatsi

Qian Gao, Pin Nie, Wei J. Yao

Folia Parasitologica 46[2] 107-110 (1999)

By examining iron contents, it is demonstrated that the monogenean Ancyrocephalus mogurndae (Yamaguti, 1940) feeds on the blood of its host, the mandarin fish Siniperca chuatsi (Basilewsky). The iron content and then the quantity of blood necessary to produce this amount of iron are found different in young and fully-matured worms. Young worms contain higher levels of iron and estimated amount of blood. It is suggested that A. mogurndae may start to feed on host blood as attached on gills, and the amount of blood ingested by young worms may vary from 0.01 to 1.00 µl before reproduction. The difference between young and fully-matured...

Morphology and taxonomy of Stomylotrema (Digenea: Stomylotrematidae) representatives from ciconiiform and podicipediform birds in Cuba

Jozef Kazimír Macko, Marta Špakulová, Juan Carlos Casanova

Folia Parasitologica 46[3] 185-190 (1999)

Two Stomylotrema Looss, 1900 species were found in storks and grebes in Cuba. Five specimens of Stomylotrema bijugum Braun, 1901 were recovered from the roseate spoonbill, Ajaia ajaja (Allen, 1942) (Ciconiiformes) while six Stomylotrema vicarium Braun, 1901 were found in the little blue heron, Egretta (syn. Florida) caerulea (L.) (Ciconiiformes) and the least grebe Podiceps dominicus dominicus (L.) (Podicipediformes). The taxa represent new host and geographical records. The problem of morphological variation within the genus Stomylotrema is briefly analysed in the discussion.

Heliocotyle ewingi sp. n. (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) from the gills of Myliobatis australis (Myliobatididae) from Tasmania, Australia

Leslie A. Chisholm, Ian D. Whittington

Folia Parasitologica 47[2] 100-104 (2000) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2000.021

Heliocotyle ewingi sp. n. (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) is described from the gills of Myliobatis australis Macleay, 1881 (Myliobatididae) collected from Norfolk Bay near Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Heliocotyle ewingi can be distinguished readily from the only other species in the genus, Heliocotyle kartasi Neifar, Euzet et Ben Hassine, 1999, by the presence of a single pseudoseptum on each of the peripheral loculi except the posteriormost, eyespots and by the morphology of the male copulatory organ which is a short, straight sclerotised tube which lacks a sclerotised accessory piece. The generic diagnosis is revised to accommodate...
