Pathology and neonatal infection of calves with Cysticercus bovis.

K Blazek, J Schramlová, J Kursa

Folia Parasitologica 29[2] 147 (1982)

It was demonstrated that the tissue reaction around the developing C. bovis in neonatally infected calves (4 days after birth) differs quantitatively and partly also qualitatively from the reaction in calves infected at the age of several months. In neonatal infection, the foci caused by cysticerci were 3-4-times smaller on day 14 p.i., and after 34 days, the cysts were quite transparent and similar to those occurring in older calves not before 42-50 days p.i. The tissue eosinophilia was lacking and the activation of fibroblasts and collagen formation was markedly weak. There was a surprisingly low number of cells of lymphoid type. The growth of the...

In vitro estimation of glycogen content in three sheep cestodes.

S Tayal, G Premvati

Folia Parasitologica 29[3] 259-263 (1982)

The glycogen content (fresh weight) was biochemically estimated in immature, mature and gravid proglottids of three cestodes, Avitellina centripunctata (Rivolta, 1874), Stilesia globipunctata (Rivolta, 1874) and Moniezia expansa (Rudolphi, 1910), having different niche in the small intestine of sheep. The glycogen gradient was in the order of mature greater than immature greater than gravid proglottids of each species of cestode. Maximum glycogen content was found to be in M. expansa and it was physiologically correlated with the presence of carbon dioxide in the posterior region of the intestine.

Antifungal activity of pyrithione against Emmonsia crescens in vitro and in vivo.

A Tomsíková, J Sterba, J Prokopic, D Novácková

Folia Parasitologica 29[3] 271-278 (1982)

The sensitivity of saprophytic and parasitic phase of some strains of Emmonsia crescens, E. parva and Chrysosporium pannorum to 22 antimycotic drugs was studied in vitro. Pyrithione produced the best effect on both live phases of the studied strains. The efficacy of Pyrithione, Pimafucin and Amphotericin B was compared in experimental adiaspiromycosis, Pyrithione showed also in vivo the best therapeutic effect. It depended on the beginning of the application. The illness did not develop if Pyrithione was applied during the first 15 days after the infection. In case of later application of Pyrithione only a very light form of adiaspiromycosis developed....

The role of wild animals in the ecology of dermatophytes and related fungi.

A Mantovani, L Morganti, G Battelli, A Mantovani, G Poglayen, M P Tampieri, G Vecchi

Folia Parasitologica 29[3] 279-284 (1982)

The problems associated with infections by dermatophytes and related fungi are discussed. Published and unpublished surveys of 1 481 wild animals of the orders Carnivora, Ungulata, Lagomorpha, Rodentia, Insectivora and Chiroptera and of 29 birds proved to be positive for fungi which were classified as potentially pathogenic zoophilic, potentially pathogenic geophilic and normally non-pathogenic geophilic. Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes was isolated from 11% of rodents; the fungus was also isolated from Insectivora, the hare and the ibex. T. mentagrophytes var. erinacei was reported in the hedgehog. Microsporum canis was reported in...

Studies on the low and fundamental populations of the warble fly Hypoderma bovis (De Geer) (Diptera, Hypodermatidae).

J Minár, K A Breev

Folia Parasitologica 30[1] 57-71 (1983)

During control measures against cattle hypodermatosis low populations of warble flies with incidence of infestation (extensity, percentage) up to 2-5% persist after a rapid decrease of the degree of infestation. In order to study these low populations isolated warble fly populations were experimentally created under conditions of Central Europe. Fundamental populations observed originated from one ovipositing female in a herd of heifers and included 17, 25, 42 and 83 larvae with 11-52% of infestation and mean infestation of 1.1-1.6 larvae per infested host (intensity of infestation). With the increasing age of heifers from one to 2.5 years the numbers...

Transfer of delayed hypersensitivity through repeatedly sensitized peritoneal exudate cells during experimental ancylostomiasis in mice.

V V Vardhani, G N Johri

Folia Parasitologica 30[2] 147-151 (1983)

Current investigations using sensitized peritoneal exudate cells from mice infected repeatedly with Ancylostoma caninum larvae supply the evidence that these cells have the capability to transfer passive immunity to isogeneic recipients in contrast to normal cells from uninfected donors. High doses of sensitization to donors and a lapse of time between the expansion and proliferation of cells in the recipients provide a rather strong immunological readiness to expel/destroy the worm burden. The larvae bore through the gut reaching the peritoneal cavity but cannot enter the liver and/or lungs; they are thus misled (in the absence of normal guiding influences)...

Incidence and some ecological aspects of avian trypanosomes in Czechoslovakia.

J Kucera

Folia Parasitologica 30[3] 209-222 (1983)

A total of 1 874 birds belonging to 99 species was investigated on the presence of trypanosomes in Czechoslovakia, using the method of blood smears and cultivation from peripheral blood (PEN method) and autopsies with subsequent cultivation from the bone marrow. Apart from a single finding in owls, the trypanosomes were detected only in passerines which represent the majority of birds investigated (1 518 specimens belonging to 66 species). Except for sparrows, in which trypanosomes were present very rarely, they were abundant practically in all bird families represented by a sufficient number of specimens. Autopsies showed that trypanosomes occurred...

Notes on the development of metacercaria and adult of Echinostoma porteri Fashuyi (Echinostomatidae).

S A Fashuyi

Folia Parasitologica 31[2] 113-119 (1984)

The metacercaria of E. porteri was found to retain its viability for a longer time in Bulinus (Physopsis) globosus (Morelet) than in Bulinus (Bulinus) forskalii (Ehrenberg) and Lymnaea natalensis (Krauss) which is the natural host for other larval stages. It becomes infective to definitive hosts about 6 h after commencement of encystment and loses its viability after 14 days in the snail host. Development of adult takes place experimentally in chicks, pigeons and rats, but hosts show age resistance to infection. Growth of adult worm is most rapid between 4th and 6th day and declines after the 17th day. Proportionate increase in body length is higher...

Sense organs of the nematodes Trichinella pseudospiralis Garkavi, 1972 and T. nativa Britov et Boev, 1972.

D Hulínská, B Shaikenov

Folia Parasitologica 31[2] 141 (1984)

The structure and distribution of the sense organs of the head and the tail of two day-old Trichinella species (females) have been determined by transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy. In both species occur 16 cephalic sense organs, which contain three modified dendritic processes, in addition to the amphids. The nerve cell bodies are situated in the area above the nerve ring. The amphid contains ten dendritic processes. The sense organs open to the external environment by pores through the cuticle. Above the bulbous tip, the dendritic processes are surrounded by hypodermal cells. They enter posteriorly the pseudocoelom and join...
