Z Zdárská, V Nasincová, J Sterba, J Valkounová
Folia Parasitologica 34[4] 311 (1987)
Two pairs of hitherto unknown multiciliate sensory endings have been demonstrated in free-swimming cercariae of Echinostoma revolutum using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. This type of receptor consists of a bundle of 36--40 short, conically projecting cilia ensheathed by a collar formed by a circular evagination of tegument in shape of a cup. The cilia projecting from the centre of a widened nerve fibre, filled with electron-lucid vesicles, possess a well developed basal body and do not contain a ciliary rootlet. The function of this receptor is discussed.
Studies on the properties of malic enzyme and malate dehydrogenase from Taenia crassiceps (Zeder, 1800) cysticerci.
J Zenka, P Kopácek, N Vokurková
Folia Parasitologica 34[4] 323-328 (1987)
It has been studied what type (or types) of malic enzyme is present in the mitochondria of Taenia crassiceps cysticerci. Only NADP-dependent malic enzyme (EC 1.1.1.40) was demonstrated. The method of isoelectric focusing was used for the detection of isoenzymes of malic enzyme and malate dehydrogenase in the cytoplasm and mitochondria of T. crassiceps cysticerci. The mitochondria contain 5 isoenzymes of malic enzyme and 5 isoenzymes of malate dehydrogenase. The cytoplasm contains 7 isoenzymes of malic enzyme (3 of them are identical with those from the mitochondria) and 7 isoenzymes of malate dehydrogenase (5 of them are identical with those from the...
Effect of vitamins on Trichinella pseudospiralis Garkavi, 1972 infection in mice.
V Figallová, J Prokopic
Folia Parasitologica 34[4] 341-346 (1987)
The effects of vitamins A, B complex, E, and ADE on the eosinophilia, body weight, number of obtained larvae and distribution of larvae of Trichinella pseudospiralis were examined in mice. The increased eosinophilia started to appear in the majority of infected mice from day 7 p.i., the maximum being around day 21 p.i. The highest values of eosinophilia were observed in the mice after application of vitamin B complex. In spite of considerable individual differences, the greatest decrease in body weight occurred in mice receiving vitamins E and B complex. The greatest numbers of larvae were obtained from mice receiving vitamins E and B complex, which...
Encounter the poultry red mite resistance to acaricides in Czechoslovak poultry-farming.

J Lom, M Pavlásková, I Dyková
Folia Parasitologica 34[4] 375 (1987)
The first case of a Thelohanellus infection in the brain of gudgeons (Gobio gobio) is described. The infection was found on three localities in southern Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. The spores measured 13.2-14.4 x 6.3-7.1 micron. The reasons are discussed for which the species was identified as T. oculileucisci Trojan, 1909.
Multiciliate sensory endings in the redia of Echinostoma revolutum (Trematoda, Echinostomatidae).
Z Zdárská, V Nasincová, J Valkounová
Folia Parasitologica 35[1] 17 (1988)
In addition to uniciliate sensory endings, three types of multiciliate sensory endings have been demonstrated on the anterior end of Echinostoma revolutum redia using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. This is the first finding of multiciliate sensory endings in the parthenogenetic generation of trematodes. In the first type, 12 cilia are situated in a pit communicating with the tegument surface. In the second and third types, there are two and four short cilia, respectively. They protrude from the nerve bulb above the surface of the tegument. The significance of multiciliate sensory endings in rediae and their similarity to multiciliate...

Levamisole--biological response modifier in Taenia crassiceps--mouse experimental system.
S Lukes
Folia Parasitologica 35[1] 37-40 (1988)
Levamisole, a common anthelminthic preparation, was used for the modification of the immune response of mice to vaccination with soluble antigen from Taenia crassiceps. The combination of antigen with Levamisole significantly increased the immunogenic effect of the antigen. Metacestodes survived in 16.7% after one dose and in 42.9% after two doses of Levamisole. The percentage of resistance was 97.7% and 67.8%.
Data on the morphology of the nematode Spinitectus minor (Stewart, 1914) (Nematoda: Cystidicolidae).

F Moravec, M D Little
Folia Parasitologica 35[2] 113 (1988)
Two new species of dracunculoid nematodes, G. carcharhini sp. n. and G. simile sp. n., representing a new genus Granulinema gen. n. (Dracunculoidea: Micropleuridae) are described from the bull shark, Carcharhinus leucas, from Louisiana (Lake Borgne), USA; the site of their localization in the host is unknown (probably abdominal cavity). The nematodes of both species were found in tissue juice and only males, juvenile females and body fragments of more advanced but nongravid females were obtained. Granulinema gen. n. differs from Micropleura, the only other genus in the family Micropleuridae, mainly by the presence of marked, dark excretory corpuscles...

K Krivanec, J Kopecký, E Tomková, L Grubhoffer
Folia Parasitologica 35[3] 273-276 (1988)
Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus was isolated from a sample of Ixodes hexagonus ticks collected from the hair of the western European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) which had been captured on the edge of a new housing estate in Ceské Budejovice at the end of September 1986. This was the first isolation of TBE virus from this vector, supporting the previous experimental results. The virus was identified in immunofluorescent and plaquereduction neutralization tests.
Analysis of soluble Entamoeba histolytica antigen using enzyme-L inked electroimmunotransfer blots.
O Ditrich, N Vokurková, M Giboda, P Kopácek
Folia Parasitologica 35[4] 309 (1988)
Soluble antigens of ten strains of E. histolytica were studied by sodium dodecylsulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and enzyme-linked electroimmunotransfer blots (EITB). No relations of immune replicas to virulence, geographical origin and method of cultivation (xenic or axenic culture) were found. Antigens of all ten strains tested precipitated with anti-E. histolytica human serum in the area of 30-43 kD. Antigen of HK-9 strain created in this area a characteristic pattern with all sera containing the specific anti-E. histolytica antibodies and, therefore, EITB can be used for excluding false positive results in ELISA.
Action of praziquantel on calcium transport in Hymenolepis diminuta.
S Tayal, S Gupta, J C Katiyar, P Sagar
Folia Parasitologica 35[4] 329-334 (1988)
Effect of praziquantel on inward and outward Ca++ fluxes was investigated in Hymenolepis diminuta in glucose supplemented balanced electrolyte solution and under conditions of glucose/Mg++ deficiency. The 45Ca++ uptake in freshly isolated worms presented, generally, a biphasic kinetics. This comprised of an initial fast uptake phase, followed by a continued slower influx. The initial fast kinetics showed insensitivity to or slight stimulation by praziquantel depending on its concentration, and such stimulatory action was particularly prominent under Mg++ deficient condition (P less than 0.01). The subsequent slower 45Ca++ uptake was, however, markedly...
The ecology of Crepidostomum species (Allocreadiidae: Digenea) in the salmonoids of Lake Yli-Kitka in northeastern Finland.
R Rahkonen, E T Valtonen
Folia Parasitologica 36[1] 13-24 (1989)
Crepidostomum spp. were studied from 417 whitefish (Coregonus acronius Rapp, 1854), 220 vendace (Coregonus albula L.) and 38 brown trout (Salmo trutta m. lacustris (L.)) from Lake Yli-Kitka in northeastern Finland during 1980-1983.12.7% of the whitefish were infected with Crepidostomum with a mean intensity of 4.6 worms per infected fish. The species involvedare C. farionis (Müller, 1784) and Crepidostomum wikgreni Gibson et Valtonen, 1988, which differed from C. farionis in the number and size of the eggs. Both types were encountered in the gall-bladder and intestine, but were unable to be distinguished as immature stages. 21% of the brown trout harboured...

Dynamics of egg production of the cestode Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Nitzsch, 1824) (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea) and the concept of fecundity in helminths.
N M Pronin, T M Timoshenko, S D Sanzhieva
Folia Parasitologica 36[1] 49-57 (1989)
The dynamics of egg production of the tapeworm D. dendriticum has been estimated experimentally in nestlings of the herring gull Larus argentatus per day and per reproductive period. Numbers of eggs in strobilae have been estimated for the maturation period. Mean egg production, of one tapeworm per day (10.42 +/- 2.72 mln) is two orders of magnitude as high as the maximal number of eggs in a mature strobila (0.206 +/- 0.007). It is proposed to estimate the coefficient of reproduction intensity as the ratio of egg output per unit of time and maximum egg numbers in a mature strobila.
Purification and properties of cytoplasmic malate dehydrogenase from Taenia crassiceps (Zeder, 1800) cysticerci.
J Zenka, J Prokopic
Folia Parasitologica 36[1] 59-65 (1989)
Malate dehydrogenase (L-malate: NAD oxidoreductase, EC 1.1.1.37) from the cytoplasm of Taenia crassiceps cysticerci was purified and the basic kinetic parameters of this enzyme were determined. The pH optimum range of enzyme reaction was found to be very wide: 8.8-11.0 for malate oxidation and 6.0-8.5 for oxaloacetate reduction. KM values for oxaloacetate, malate, NAD, and NADH were 7.8.10(-5) M, 1.4.10(-4) M, 1.2.10(-4) M, and 6.10(-5) M, respectively. Malate dehydrogenase activity was inhibited by malate excess. Molecular weight of malate dehydrogenase was 70,800. A comparison of the data obtained with those from other organisms including vertebrates...

E T Valtonen, P Rintamäki, M Lappalainen
Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 351-370 (1989)
10,288 fish specimens of 34 species from three water bodies in northern Finland were studied mainly in 1978-1982 Triaenophorus nodulosus and T. crassus parasites. Six of the 31 species from the Bothnian Bay were found to harbour T. nodulosus plerocercoids, four of the 11 from the cold, oligotrophic Lake Yli-Kitka in northeastern Finland and only one of the 6 from the small, eutrophic Lake Kuivasjärvi. The ruff (Gymnocephalus cernuus) was most essential intermediate host in the lakes, as supported by stomach analysis of predator fish. Although the highest prevalences were found in adult burbot (Lota lota) in two of the areas, these fish are more likely...
