Large numbers of anisakid nematodes identified as Raphidascaris (Sprentascaris) hypostom (Petter et Cassone, 1984) were collected from the stomach and intestine of armoured catfishes P leco stomus albopunctatus, P. commersoni, P. derbyi, and Ancistrus cirrhosus (all representing new host records) from the three water reservoirs, Salto Osório, Salto Santiago and Passo Fundo, in southern Brazil. Another closely related species, R. (S.) mahnerti (Petter et Cassone, 1984), was recorded from the intestine of the armoured catfish Loricaria laticeps of the Paraná River. Since these are the first records of these parasites since their original descriptions,...

Folia Parasitologica 37[3] 201-205 (1990)
A group of 401 patients suspected for toxoplasmosis was examined by the indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). All patients positive in IFAT (176) were examined by the immunosorbent agglutination assay (IgM ISA). In the IgM ISA 154 of them were negative, 10 temporarily and 12 high-positive. Some of high-positive patients were examined repeatedly; decrease of high levels of specific IgM antibodies occurred 2-9 months after the first examination. For the IgM ISA antigen prepared from peritoneal exudate of experimentally infected mice was used. The antigen was stable at 4 degrees C or in liquid nitrogen at least 1 year. The IgM ISA combined...

Folia Parasitologica 37[4] 359-362 (1990)
A total of 378 adult Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected by flagging vegetation in four localities of two districts (Breclav, Znojmo) in south Moravia and examined microscopically. Borreliae were identified in Giemsa-stained midgut smears from 32 (i.e. 8.5%) ticks (9.4% females, 7.2% males); the infection rate varied between 0.0 and 11.4% in the four localities examined. Among female ticks, significantly more were found to be infected in autumn (19.7%) than in spring (5.8%). Dark-field (DF) and Giemsa-stained smears (GS) examinations were compared for their sensitivity in detecting borreliae in 128 field-collected ticks; GS method showed a little higher...

MORPHOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT OF NOSEMA-SERBICA WEISER, 1963 (MICROSPORA, NOSEMATIDAE), PARASITE OF THE GYPSY-MOTH LYMANTRIA-DISPAR (LEPIDOPTERA, LYMANTRIIDAE)
D PILARSKA, J VAVRA
Folia Parasitologica 38[2] 115-121 (1991)
Morphological data completing the description of Nosema serbica Weiser, 1963 are presented. The parasite has binucleate, tetranucleate and octonucleate diplokaryotic meronts, binucleate and tetranucleate diplokaryotic sporonts and binucleate sporoblasts and spores. Living spores are oval, measuring 5.24 x 2.4-mu-m. Polar tube is isofilar with 8-9 coils. It is confirmed that the parasite is transovarially transmitted and causes significant mortality of its host. It infects almost all tissues and organs of gypsy moth caterpillars with the exception of salivary glands, midgut epithelium and hypodermis, causing an inflammatory reaction in its host manifested...

A reexamination of the type specimens of Thominx platyrrhinorum Barus, 1961, described from the small intestine of the monkey Cebus capucinus from a zoo in Czechoslovakia, has revealed that it belongs to the genus Aonchotheca Lopez-Neyra, 1947. The minute refractile formations on the surface of the proximal part of the spicular sheath, originally described as spines in this species, are also present in Aonchotheca annulosa parasitizing murid rodents. Since there are no substantial morphological or biometrical differences between these two species, as indicated by the description of A. annulosa specimens originating from Apodemus sp. from Czechoslovakia,...

Spinicauda dugesii sp. n. (Heterakoidea, Heterakidae), parasite of the gut of the lizard Podarcis dugesii Milne-Edwards, 1829 (Reptilia, Lacertidae) from Madeira Island is described. Males of the new species are characterized by their narrow lateral alae, and curved and very chitinized spicules of the same length: females by their thick-shelled, almost round and embryonated eggs. At the external wall of the host's gut, parasitic cysts of this nematode with immature stages inside were also observed.

Folia Parasitologica 39[2] 123-132 (1992)
The egg morphology of the following medically important small flukes from Southeast Asia and Far East were studied: Opisthorchis viverrini, Clonorchis sinensis (Opisthorchiidae), Haplorchis taichui, H.pumilio, H. yokogawai, Stellantchasmus falcatus and Metagonimus sp. (Heterophyidae). This study revealed a great intraspecific variability and interspecific similarity in size and shape of eggs. The eggs shape does not seem to be suitable for species identification. On the other band, biometrical analysis of egg size enabled us to divide eggs from the species studied into four distinct groups according to the Faust-Meleney index (FMI) characterizing egg...
OBSERVATIONS ON THE BIONOMY OF ALLOCREADIUM-ISOPORUM (LOOSS, 1894) (TREMATODA, ALLOCREADIIDAE)
MORAVEC F
Folia Parasitologica 39[2] 133-144 (1992)
From October 1985 until July 1987, the bionomy of the trematode Allocreadium isoporum (Looss, 1894) was studied in the Rokytna River (the Danube basin), Czechoslovakia. While clams of the genera Sphaerium Scopoli and Pisidium Pfeiffer apparently serve as its first intermediate hosts, mayfly larvae Ephemera danica Mull. were found (prevalence 8 %, intensity 1-5 metacercariae per mayfly) to be the only second intermediate host of A. isoponon in the locality. The most important definitive host is chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.), in which the seasonal dynamics of A. isoporum occurrence and maturation was followed. The parasite exhibits here a distinct seasonal...

The present paper comprises a systematic survey of nematodes of the superfamilies Trichuroidea, Oxyuroidea and Cosmocercoidea collected from fishes of the Parana River, southern Brazil, in 1985 and 1991. The following species were recorded: Paracapillaria piscicola. Capillariidae gen. sp. 1, Capillariidae gen. sp. 2, Travnema travnema, T. araujoi, Cosmoxynema vianai, Cosmoxynemoides aguirrei, Ichthyouris laterifilamenta sp. n., I. brasiliensis, Brasilnema pimelodellae, Parasynodontisia petterae and Rondonia rondoni. I. lateristriga sp. n. from Trachydoras paraguayensis is characterized mainly by the presence of lateral egg filaments and by the structure...
GYRODACTYLUS-BOHEMICUS SP-N (MONOGENEA, GYRODACTYLIDAE) FROM ONCORHYNCHUS-MYKISS (WALBAUM) AND SALVELINUS-FONTINALIS (MITCHILL) (CLUPEIFORMES, SALMONIDAE) IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA
ERGENS R
Folia Parasitologica 39[4] 391-394 (1992)
Gyrodactylus bohemicus sp. n. (Gyrodactylidae: Monogenea) is described from the fins, skin and gill filaments of Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) and Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill) (Clupeiformes: Salmonidae) from a trout farm in Czechoslovakia. G. bohemicus sp. n. is most closely related to G. thymalli Zitnan, 1960 and G. magnus Konovalov, 1967 in the shape of the anchors, the ventral and the dorsal bar, but can be distinguished from both these species by the shape of the marginal hook proper.
