Morphological and histochemical studies on the development of testis and spermatogenesis in the ruminal trematode of sheep, Paramphistomum cervi (Digenea: Paramphistomatidae).
B C Gupta, V R Parshad, S S Guraya
Folia Parasitologica 33[2] 131 (1986)
Morphological and histochemical changes accompanying testicular development and spermatogenesis have been described in the ruminal trematode Paramphistomum cervi during the course of its infection in sheep. Small testes of 4-week-old worms contain a few primordial germ cells. Spermatogonial cells appear first in 6-week-old worms and increase in number by the 10th week when the testes become large and follicular. Mature spermatozoa appear in the testes of 16-week-old worms. General pattern of spermatogenesis is the same as described for other trematodes, i.e. a single spermatogonium gives rise to 32 spermatozoa. Cytophore is formed at secondary spermatogonial...
Efficacy of salinomycin, monensin and lasalocid against spontaneous eimeria infection in rabbits.
M Pakandl
Folia Parasitologica 33[3] 195-198 (1986)
Rabbits spontaneously infected with coccidia of the genus Eimeria were treated with salinomycin, lasalocid and monensin. The drugs were applied in pellets in the doses of 50 ppm. The weight gain in rabbits treated with salinomycin and monensin was higher than in those treated with lasalocid and by 22.6% higher than in control animals. The weight gain in animals treated with lasalocid was almost the same as in the control group. The oocyst production was suppressed most significantly by salinomycin.

Folia Parasitologica 33[3] 235-240 (1986)
Intensity of incorporation of the labelled carbon from glucose, glucosamine and leucine into the glycogen of somatic cells and reproductive organs of Ascaris suum females has been studied. Glucose was most intensively incorporated into the growing oocytes and into the uterine epithelial cells, whereas its incorporation into muscle glycogen was found to result in lowest rates. Radiocarbons from glucosamine and leucine were incorporated into tissue glycogen of female worms much less than glucose. Incorporation of isotopes into glycogen of the eggs depended on the formation of their primary shells. The ways of incorporation of isotopes into glycogen of...
Analysis of interspecific relationships in mesostigmatid mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) in the nests of the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus (Schreber, 1780)).
M Daniel, V Albrecht
Folia Parasitologica 33[3] 251-264 (1986)
An analysis is presented of a community of mesostigmatid mites from the nests of Clethrionomys glareolus found in the forest biotopes of Vsetínské Beskydy Mts. (North Moravia) throughout all seasons of the year. Main attention was paid to the structure of the nest community, relationships of mites to their host and interspecific relationships in the mites themselves. Primarily cluster and factor analyses based on correlation matrix were used for mathematical assessment. The particular elements of correlation matrix were Spearman's non-parametric correlation coefficients computed from frequencies of species in the nests studied.

Folia Parasitologica 33[4] 327 (1986)
Four types of gland cells--escape, head, praeacetabular and postacetabular--were demonstrated by histochemical methods in the cercaria of Orientobilharzia turkestanica. The secretion of the head gland contains proteins with cystine and phospholipids. It exhibits the acid phosphatase activity. The secretion of the escape glands contains proteins with cystine and cysteine and the secretion of the postacetabular gland cells proteins with cystine, cysteine and tyrosine, and neutral and acid mucosubstances.

Folia Parasitologica 34[1] 39-56 (1987)
The present knowledge of the life cycles of nematodes of the family Capillariidae is reviewed and these data are considered from the viewpoint of a new system of the classification of genera in this family (Moravec 1982). An analysis of the relevant literature as also own studies have shown that, in this nematode group, there occur both direct (homoxenous) life cycles without an intermediate host (Baruscapillaria, Pseudocapillaria, Calodium, Pseudocapillaroides, partly also Capillaria, Eucoleus and Aonchotheca) and heteroxenous cycles with participation of obligate intermediate hosts that are usually oligochaetes and rarely fishes (Schulmanela, Pearsonema,...

Immune reactions in guinea pigs due to somatic antigens from fourth-stage larvae of Bunostomum trigonocephalum.
S Kumar
Folia Parasitologica 34[3] 243-247 (1987)
Lyophilized somatic antigens obtained from fourth-stage larvae of Bunostomum trigonocephalum induced significant resistance against the development of L4 from L3 and adults from L4. The higher antigen dose (1,000 LE) significantly reduced the number of adults developed from L4 as compared to the lower dose (600 LE) which did so only insignificantly. Inflammation of the intestinal tissue and loosening of the intestinal luminal contents were characteristics of the immunized animals.
Experimental verification of the effect of the form (scaly or scaleless) of carp host (C. carpio L.) on the growth rate of micropopulations of Gyrodactylus katharineri Malmberg, 1964 (Monogenea).
M Gelnar
Folia Parasitologica 34[4] 305-309 (1987)
It was demonstrated that the growth rate of Gyrodactylus katharineri micropopulations parasitizing the fry of Cyprinus carpio L. was effected by water temperature and by the form of the fish host (scaly or scaleless). At lower water temperature (12 degrees C) the number of parasites increased in both host forms approximately at the same intensity. In warmer water (18 degrees C), the parasites reproduced intensively only on the scaly form of fish, whereas no parasites were found on the scaleless form some days after infection.
Dependency of resistance of mice immunized against Taenia crassiceps on the dose of soluble antigen.
S Lukes
Folia Parasitologica 34[4] 329-333 (1987)
Mice immunized with a single dose (1.25-40 micrograms/mouse) of soluble antigen from Taenia crassiceps cysticerci developed a 62.9-85.0% resistance. Maximum effect was achieved in the groups immunized with 40 micrograms and 20 micrograms of antigen. The dose of 5 micrograms induced the lowest number of successful infections (28.6%), but the mean number of surviving larvae was higher than in the above groups.

The dynamics of eosinophilia in concurrent infections with Trichinella spiralis Owen, 1835 and Toxascaris leonina Linstow, 1909.
V Figallová, J Prokopic
Folia Parasitologica 35[4] 365-369 (1988)
The concurrent infection with larvae of Trichinella spiralis and eggs of Toxascaris leonina was studied under various conditions using 75 male white mice. The changes in content of eosinophilic leucocytes in the blood, as well as the total number and distribution of larvae of both parasites in different body tissues were demonstrated. The primary infection with Toxascaris leonina caused an increase in the number of eosinophilic leucocytes from day 4 p.i., whereas the infection with Trichinella spiralis larvae induced an increase only from day 7 p.i. An antagonism was observed between the two parasite species: the primary infection with T. leonina led...

Chaetotaxy of cercariae of Opisthioglyphe ranae (Frölich, 1791) (Trematoda: Plagiorchidae).
V Dimitrov, J Busta, I Kanev
Folia Parasitologica 36[3] 265-274 (1989)
A detailed observation of the sensory apparatus of Opisthioglyphe ranae (Frölich, 1791) cercariae was carried out. The species was determined on the basis of an experimental study of the life cycle and morphology of sporocysts, cercariae, metacercariae, and adults. In contrast to other species of the family Plagiorchidae, no papillae were present in the positions CId1, CId2, CII0, CII3 and CII4. Papillae with markedly ventral situation on the postacetabular zone were found very rarely. Some of the cercariae possessed ventral papillae variously distributed in the preacetabular zone. A comparative analysis of the chaetotaxy revealed that the cercaria...

A new genus of capillariids from birds, Tridentocapillaria gen. n. (Nematoda: Capillariidae).
V Barus, T P Sergeeva
Folia Parasitologica 37[1] 67-75 (1990)
A new genus of the family Capillariidae, Tridentocapillaria gen. n., has been established. A type species is Tridentocapillaria tridens (Dujardin, 1845) comb. n. Other species of this genus are T. eurycerca (Oschmarin et Parukhin, 1963) comb. n., T. parusi (Wakelin, Schmidt et Kuntz, 1970) comb. n., and T. javanensis (Wakelin, Schmidt et Kuntz, 1971) comb. n. The new genus is characterized by the presence of a trilobed pseudobursa formed by three processes, and a vulvar appendage is always present in females. The genus includes species parasitic in the intestine of birds of the orders Passeriformes and Piciformes.
Visualization of chitin-protein layer formation in Ascaris lumbricoides egg-shells.
D Sromová, H Lýsek
Folia Parasitologica 37[1] 77-80 (1990)
The formation of chitin-protein layer in Ascaris lumbricoides egg-shells was studied using the method of chitin structures visualization by means of derivatives of stilbene-disulfonic acid (Blankophor, Bayer, FRG). Intensive formation of chitin structures in A. lumbricoides egg-shell occurred only in fertilized females in a very short portion of uterus from the site of connection of the oviduct with the uterus up to 25-30 mm distally, i.e. in the section forming about one fifth or less than one sixth of length of adult female uterus. Already 3 mm from the beginning of uterus there was a thin layer on the surface of the fertilized eggs which contained...
Three species of the hair follicle mites (Acari: Demodicidae) parasitizing the sheep, Ovis aries L.
V Bukva
Folia Parasitologica 37[1] 81-91 (1990)
Evidence of three distinct Demodex species parasitizing the sheep is given for the first time. A newly distinguished Demodex sp. is described, and diagnostic characters are compared for Demodex ovis Hirst, 1919, D. aries Desch, 1983, and Demodex sp. Information on prevalence, distribution in the tissues, and pathogenicity of these three Demodex species in 132 head of sheep in Czechoslovakia is presented, with a review of such data published to date.
