Fish-isolated Naegleria strains and their phylogeny inferred from ITS and SSU rDNA sequences
Iva Dyková, Hana Pecková, Ivan Fiala, Helena Dvořáková
Folia Parasitologica 53[3] 172-180 (2006) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2006.023
Effort was made to identify Naegleria strains isolated from organs of fish, using phylogenetic analyses of SSU rDNA and ITS sequences. Eighteen fish-isolated strains studied enlarged substantially the so far available set of Naegleria strains characterized by both molecular markers. The phylogenetic analyses of separate and concatenated SSU rDNA and ITS sequences revealed phylogenetic relationships of strains under study; however, they failed to solve classification of fish-isolated strains into species. The sequence similarity of strain-representatives of Naegleria species as well as data obtained on intragenomic variation of...
Ailinella mirabilis gen. n., sp. n. (Eucestoda: Pseudophyllidea) from Galaxias maculatus (Pisces: Galaxiidae) in the Andean-Patagonian region of Argentina
Alicia A. Gilde Pertierra, Liliana G. Semenas
Folia Parasitologica 53[4] 276-286 (2006) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2006.034
Ailinella gen. n. (Pseudophyllidea: Triaenophoridae) is proposed to accommodate Ailinella mirabilis sp. n. from Galaxias maculatus (Jenyns, 1842), a freshwater fish inhabiting the Andean lakes in Argentinean Patagonia. Ailinella belongs to the Triaenophoridae because it has a marginal genital pore, a follicular vitelline gland, and a ventral uterine pore. The new genus can be distinguished from other triaenophorids by the following combination of characters: a small body size, a low number of proglottides, which are longer than wide, a truncated pyramidal to globular scolex, a rectangular apical disc, presence of the neck,...
Structure of the cephalic end of Ascarophis mexicana (Nematoda: Cystidicolidae), as revealed by SEM
František Moravec, David González-Solís
Folia Parasitologica 54[2] 155-156 (2007) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2007.021
Scanning electron microscopy of the cystidicolid nematode Ascarophis mexicana Moravec, Salgado-Maldonado et Vivas-Rodríguez, 1995 enabled the first detailed study of its cephalic structure. In contrast to most Ascarophis species, its pseudolabia are highly reduced and sublabia are unlobed and weakly developed. Similascarophis is considered a synonym of Ascarophis, to which two its species are transferred as A. maulensis (Muñoz, González et George-Nascimento, 2004) comb. n. and A. chilensis (Muñoz, González et George-Nascimento, 2004) comb. n.

Folia Parasitologica 55[4] 309-312 (2008) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2008.039
The scolex surface of the mature spathebothriidean Cyathocephalus truncatus (Pallas, 1781), a parasite of the brown trout Salmo trutta fario L., was studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. A particular attention was paid to microtriches, unique structure on the surface of the Cestoda. The scolex of C. truncatus is covered with two types of filiform microtriches (filitriches): aciculate (≈ 3 µm long) and capillate (≈ 10 µm long). Capillate microtriches, which have never been reported in any other spathebothriideans, are described for the first time using transmission electron microscopy....
Development of the philometrids Philometra overstreeti and Philometroides paralichthydis in the experimentally infected copepod Oithona colcarva
Timothy P. Bryan, Lam C. Tsoi, Isaurede Buron
Folia Parasitologica 55[4] 313-315 (2008) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2008.040
Philometra overstreeti Moravec et de Buron, 2006 and Philometroides paralichthydis Moravec et de Buron, 2006 are common parasites of the southern flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma Jordan et Gilbert. Because the life cycles of these parasites are unknown, our goal was to assess whether species of copepod commonly found in our estuaries could serve as intermediate hosts for these philometrids. Individuals of five species of copepods were collected and exposed to L1 larvae of each philometrid species. The cyclopoid Oithona colcarva Bowman was the only species to become successfully in-fected. Successive moulting of philometrid...

Re-examination of the syntypes of the capillariid nematode Neocapillaria phoxini Yu et Wang, 1994, the type species of Neocapillaria Yu et Wang, 1994, described from the intestine of the freshwater fish Phoxinus lagowskii variegatus Günther (Cyprinidae) from China, confirmed its morphological similarity with species of Freitascapillaria Moravec, 1987, to which it is transferred as Freitascapillaria phoxini (Yu et Wang, 1994) comb. n. Consequently, Neocapillaria Yu et Wang, 1994 (a homonym to Neocapillaria Moravec, 1987) and Sinocapillaria Moravec et Spratt, 1998 become junior synonyms of Freitascapillaria....

Nudaciraxine imperium sp. n. (Monogenea: Axinidae) is described from the gills of the needlefish Tylosurus acus imperialis (Rafinesque) caught in the Gulf of Gabès, Tunisia. This new species mainly differs from both previously described species, Nudaciraxine gracilis (Linton, 1940) Price, 1962 from Strongylura marina (Walbaum) and Nudaciraxine cabosanlucensis Payne, 1990 from Ablennes sp., by having more testes (42 vs. 20-22 and 32, respectively). Nudaciraxine imperium also differs from N. gracilis by having a median vaginal pore (submedian in N. gracilis), narrower clamps (52-70...

This study describes Crenosoma brasiliense (Nematoda, Metastrongyloidea), a new species parasitic in bronchi and bronchioles of Galictis cuja (Molina) (Carnivora, Mustelidae) from Brazil. This species differs from other 11 species of Crenosoma by having a cuticular projection at the distal end of the spicules, forming a prominent blade at the tip of the spicule, a vulval cuticular appendage with a triangular shape and prominent vulval lips. There are no previous records of species of Metastrongyloidea in G. cuja or species of Crenosoma in South America. Therefore, the new species represents the first host record and...

Folia Parasitologica 60[2] 102-104 (2013) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2013.011
Abstract: Calodium hepaticum (Bancroft, 1893) Moravec, 1982 (syn. Capillaria hepatica) is a cosmopolitan capillariid nematode, infecting mainly rodents and occasionally other mammals, including humans. Reports of C. hepaticum in canids are rare and the present one is, to the best of our knowledge, the first reported case in a red fox (Vulpes vulpes Linnaeus) in Italy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination of the eggs of C. hepaticum allowed a precise description of the egg morphology, which is one of the most relevant specific characteristics of capillariid nematodes. The egg shell showed a fibrous beam-like...
A review of the currently recognised zoogonid cercariae, including the identification and emergence ecology of Cercaria capricornia XI (Digenea: Zoogonidae) from Nassarius olivaceus (Gastropoda: Nassariidae) in Central Queensland, Australia
Leonie J. Barnett, Terrence L. Miller, Thomas H. Cribb
Folia Parasitologica 61[4] 322-330 (2014) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2014.039
In the present study, we review the known zoogonid cercariae, summarise their life-cycles and first intermediate host distributions, and present a new cercaria, Cercaria capricornia XI (Digenea: Zoogonidae), which was found in one of three nassariid gastropods, Nassarius olivaceus (Bruguière), surveyed in the intertidal zone in the Capricornia region of Central Queensland, Australia. Morphological data and molecular analysis of the ITS2 rDNA region support placement of this cercaria in the family Zoogonidae but do not allow any further resolution of its identity. There are now fifteen cercariae described as belonging to the Zoogonidae;...
Revision of the genus Afrogyrodactylus Paperna, 1968 (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae) with description of two new species from geographically distant localities
Iva Přikrylová, Wilmien J. Luus-Powell
Folia Parasitologica 61[6] 529-536 (2014) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2014.066
This study revises the originally monotypic genus Afrogyrodactylus Paperna, 1968 (Monogenea), the species of which infect alestid fish (Characiformes) in Africa, and includes new records of these parasites from three geographically distant countries, Senegal, Sudan and South Africa. Morphology of opisthaptoral hooks and bars and nuclear ribosomal DNA data revealed three Afrogyrodactylus species. Afrogyrodactylus girgifae sp. n. is described from the fins of the Sudanese nurse tetra, Brycinus nurse (Rüppell), and A. kingi sp. n. presents from the gill arches of the South African sharptooth tetra, Micralestes acutidens...
A new mite species Schizocoptes daberti sp. n. (Acariformes: Chirodiscidae) from Chrysochloris stuhlmanni Matsche (Afrosoricida: Chrysochloridae) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Andre V. Bochkov
Folia Parasitologica 63:005 (2016) | DOI: 10.14411/fp.2016.005
A new mite species Schizocoptes daberti sp. n. (Acariformes: Chirodiscidae) from Chrysochloris stuhlmanni Matsche (Afrosoricida: Chrysochloridae) from the Democratic Republic of the Congo is described. It differs from the closely related species S. conjugatus Lawrence, 1944 in both sexes by distance si-si at least twice longer than si-se (vs these distances are subequal in S. conjugatus); in females by setae cp 30-40 µm long (vs about 65 µm long), and in males by the very weakly sclerotised posterior parts of the hysteronotal shield (vs strongly sclerotised),...
