Naegleria fowleri in cooling circuits of industrial and power plants in North Moravia.

L Cerva, L Simanov

Folia Parasitologica 30[2] 97-101 (1983)

Both nonvirulent (15 strains) and virulent (1 strain) variants of Naegleria fowleri were isolated from the cooling circuits in seven of ten examined plants in North Moravia. No amoebae were found in waters with a high salinity (electric conductivity more than 614 microseconds) and with a low content of phosphates (less than 0.37 mg . 1(-1)) and oxygen (less than 7.4 mg . 1(-1)). Other results of the physical, chemical and bacteriological examinations showed no direct bearing on the occurrence of N. fowleri.

Human hydatidosis in South Bohemia.

J Prokopic, J Sterba, L Neubauer

Folia Parasitologica 30[2] 123 (1983)

Hydatid cysts were found on histopathological examination of liver from 9 patients at the age of 60-91 years in South Bohemia (Czechoslovakia). These findings suggest that human hydatidosis may occur in old people in Czechoslovakia.

Scanning electron microscopy of the trematode Hasstilesia ovis.

Z Zdárská, T N Soboleva, T A Bakke

Folia Parasitologica 30[4] 341 (1983)

The trematode Hasstilesia ovis parasitic in sheep was studied by scanning electron microscopy. A single type of sensory papillae was found on the surface of oral and ventral suckers and around the genital pore. The whole surface of body, except the oral and ventral suckers and vicinity of genital pore, is covered with spines. The mostly multipointed and rarely singlepointed spines are of variable size and distribution on different parts of body. They irritate mechanically the intestinal mucosa of the definitive host and thus increase the pathogenic effect of the trematode.

Ancylostoma caninum: a report on the peripheral eosinophilia in naive and immunized Swiss albino mice.

N P Kolhe, G N Johri

Folia Parasitologica 30[4] 345-349 (1983)

The number of peripheral eosinophils was counted in female Swiss albino mice on 1, 4, 9, 16 and 30 days after infection with various single (500, 1000 and 2000) and weekly repeated (500 + + 500 + 1000, 1000 + 1000 and 1000 + 1000 + 2000) doses of filariform Ancylostoma caninum larvae. The eosinophil response was significantly higher in infected than in uninfected mice and reached a peak on day 16 in naive and day 4 and 9 in immunized mice. Immunized mice were significantly more eosinophilic than the naive mice. An attempt has been made to correlate eosinophilia with immunity of mice to A. caninum larvae.

The effect of monoclonal antibodies on Schistosoma mansoni cercarial penetration of mouse skin.

S K Abdel-Hafez, D M Zodda, S M Phillips

Folia Parasitologica 30[4] 351-355 (1983)

Monoclonal antibodies (MA) were prepared by the fusion of spleen cells from C57BL/6J mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni with non-secreting SP2 myeloma cells. Clones of fused cells secreting MA reactive with the egg and cercarial antigens (as determined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), as well as with schistosomules (as determined by immunofluorescence), were injected into pristane "primed" mice to produce ascitic fluid. Cercariae were treated with MA by incubating them in individual MA or a pool of 3 or 4 MA (0.25 ml each) in form of ascitic fluid diluted in 10 ml of snail water for 60-90 minutes prior to snail exposure. Groups of 7-9...

Some aspects of histochemical studies on the parasite and tissue reaction in bovine cysticercosis.

J Schramlová, K Blazek

Folia Parasitologica 31[1] 37 (1984)

Histochemical studies on the cysticercus and surrounding tissue reaction were performed at various intervals after experimental infection. It was found that acid mucosubstances and proteins with SH- and SS-groups appeared first in the granulation tissue around the cysticercus (on about day 14 p.i.) and only later (on day 28 p.i.) in the tegument of the cysticercus where they were localized in the rim of microtriches. This envelope consisting of mucosubstances and proteins seems to be identical with the electron-dense substance found on the surface of developing cysticercus during electron-microscopical studies. It is considered to be a mimicry enabling...

J Schramlová, K Blazek, Z Marhoul, A Singhvi

Folia Parasitologica 31[3] 247 (1984)

Oncospheres of Taenia saginata cultivated in Leibovitz's medium on a cell monolayer from calf kidney developed up to 10th day of in vitro cultivation. Fine and often branched microvilli were observed on their surface. On day 5 of cultivation, the muscle system of hooks turned to a granular matter and on day 7 neither hooks nor their muscle system were found. The tegumental cytoplasm was not formed in the period of 7-60 days of cultivation. On days 7 and 10 of cultivation, a contact of oncospheres with the cells of monolayer was visible. On day 10 of cultivation, an extrusion of a portion of cytoplasm of surface cells filled with minute vesicles occurred....

The effects of temperature, relative humidity and host factors on the attachment and survival of Boophilus decoloratus and Boophilus geigyi larvae to skin slices.

A Amoo, O O Dipeolu

Folia Parasitologica 32[1] 83-88 (1985)

Attachment and survival of Boophilus decoloratus and B. geigyi larvae were examined using skin slices from cattle, sheep and goats. Results indicate that B. decoloratus has a wider range of temperature (24-40 degrees C) at which more than 50% of larvae would attach to bovine skin, while B. geigyi has a narrower range (24-30 degrees C). The larvae of both species had two peaks of attachment--the 4th and 20th hour, the value for the second peak being greater than the first. The influence of humidity on larval attachment was only apparent where the temperature was high, and in such cases more than 70% of B. decoloratus larvae attached, while less than...
