K Tyagi, P K Murthy, A B Sen
Folia Parasitologica 37[3] 261-265 (1990)
Mastomys natalensis pretreated with diethylcarbamazine (DEC), levamisole or centperazine were exposed to the standard inoculum of infective larvae of Brugia malayi. Percentage 'take' of infection, duration of prepatent period, course of microfilaraemia and number of adult worms recovered were compared with those of untreated infected Mastomys (control). DEC and centperazine did not alter the 'take' (DEC/centperazine: 100%; control: 88.24%) and the average prepatent period (DEC: 105.44 days; centperazine: 105.18 days, control: 109.20 days). In levamisole pretreated animals on the other hand, the 'take' was much lower (68.18%) with extended prepatent...

THE ACTIVITY OF ASPERGILLUS-OCHRACEUS (FUNGI) ON REPLETE FEMALES OF RHIPICEPHALUS-SANGUINEUS (ACARI, IXODIDAE) IN NATURAL AND EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS
ESTRADAPENA, A GONZALEZ, J CASASOLAS, A
Folia Parasitologica 37[4] 331-336 (1990)
Aspergillus ochraceus Wilhelm was isolated from Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille) ticks infected under natural conditions, and developing an illness characterized by absence of oviposition, mummification and death. From the histological sections, it is deduced that A. ochraceus colonized the ticks via the anus, as posterior gut and Malpighian tubules are invaded. The experimental inoculation was carried out on replete female ticks; a disease alike to that observed in naturally infected ticks developed only when specimens are placed under a relative humidity near saturation.

ULTRASTRUCTURE OF THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE-SYSTEM OF THE TREMATODE BRACHYLAIMUS-AEQUANS
Z ZDARSKA, TN SOBOLEVA, J STERBA, J VALKOUNOVA
Folia Parasitologica 38[1] 33-38 (1991)
The transmission electron microscopic studies of the trematode Brachylaimus aequans revealed that the seminal vesicle and ejaculatory duct are lined with syncytial epithelium with numerous lamellate processes. The cirrus and genital pore are covered with a spineless tegument, which is almost identical with the body tegument. The testes contain tailed spermatozoa developing during spermiogenesis from biflagellate spermatids whose flagella (9 + 1) fuse with the median cytoplasmic process. The lumina of seminal vesicle, ejaculatory duct and cirrus are filled with spermatozoa.
STUDIES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CESTODE PROTEOCEPHALUS-NEGLECTUS LA RUE, 1911 (CESTODA, PROTEOCEPHALIDAE) UNDER EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS
T SCHOLZ
Folia Parasitologica 38[1] 39-55 (1991)
A part of the life cycle of Proteocephalus neglectus La Rue, 1911, a parasite of trout, starting from release of eggs from mature parasites into water, to the early phase of development in the definitive host, was studied under experimental conditions. Special regard has been paid to development in the intermediate host, copepod Cyclops strenuus. Some oncospheres in eggs kept in water at 5 and 10-degrees-C remained infective for 20-25 days. The percentage of infected copepods depended on the length of their contact with parasite eggs. Cestode larvae (cercoscoleces) were formed in the intermediate host on days 8-10 p.i. at the temperatures of 21-22-degrees-C,...
EFFECT OF IVERMECTIN ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF SERUM ANTIBODY-ACTIVITY IN RABBITS INFESTED WITH PSOROPTES-CUNICULI (ACARI, PSOROPTIDAE)
J UHLIR
Folia Parasitologica 38[1] 79-82 (1991)
Effect of ivermectin injected subcutaneously in a single dose on the serum specific antibody activity against Psoroptes cuniculi antigens was studied on four heavily and three weakly P. cuniculi infested rabbits. It has been shown that ivermectin enhanced the production of the specific antibody, especially in weakly infested rabbits. The serum specific antibody activity in both heavily and weakly infested rabbits reached the peak levels on fifth day after injection of ivermectin.
NOTES ON GYRODACTYLUS-GUSSEVI LING MO-EN, 1962 (MONOGENEA, GYRODACTYLIDAE)
R ERGENS, SS YUKHIMENKO
Folia Parasitologica 38[1] 87-89 (1991)
The authors describe a species which is strikingly similar to the species Gyrodactylus gussevi Ling Mo-en, 1962 on the basis of morphometrical evaluation of 6 gyrodactylid specimens found on the fins of Parasilurus asotus (L.) which was captured in the River Amur near Khabarovsk. Due to inaccurate and incomplete original description of G. gussevi, the authors have to determine this species only provisionally as G. gussevi. As a result of evident appurtenance to G. latus-complex, P. asotus seems to be the

T SCHOLZ
Folia Parasitologica 38[2] 133-142 (1991)
The development of the tapeworm Khawia sinensis parasitizing carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) has been studied from the release of cestode eggs into water to the formation of infective procercoids in the intermediate host under laboratory conditions. The rate of embryonal development is greatly influenced by the water temperature. While at 5-degrees-C the development of oncospheres was not recorded, at 10-12-degrees-C, 15-degrees-C, 20-22-degrees-C, and 23-24-degrees-C oncospheres were fully formed after 57, 42, 21 and 16 days, respectively. Infectivity of oncospheres was confirmed by successful experimental infection of the intermediate hosts: Tubifex tubifex...

F MORAVEC, T SCHOLZ
Folia Parasitologica 38[2] 163-178 (1991)
In 1989, samples of some freshwater fishes collected in Vientiane Province (R. Mekong basin) in Laos were examined for helminths. This material comprised 11 species of parasitic nematodes (7 adults and 4 larvae), including 3 species new to science: Canallanus (Camallanus) hampalae sp. n. from Hampala macrolepidota, Procamallanus (Punctocamallanus) punctatus sp. n. from Mystus rhegma and Mystus sp., and Rhabdochona (Globochona) equispiculata sp. n. from Hampala macrolepidota and H. dispar. Zeylanema Yeh, 1960 is considered a subgenus of the genus Camallanus, Dentocamallanus subgen. n. (type species C. (D.) sweeti (Moorthy, 1937)) is proposed for the...
ENZYME VARIANTS OF EIMERIA PARASITIZING THE DOMESTIC-FOWL AND POSSIBILITIES OF SPECIES DIAGNOSTICS
J KUCERA
Folia Parasitologica 38[3] 193-199 (1991)
Electrophoretic variation of the enzymes lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and glucosephosphate isomerase (GPI) of Eimeria parasitizing the domestic fowl in Czechoslovakia is summarized and the differentiation of species of poultry coccidia is discussed. A new method for evaluation of zymograms of coccidial enzymes is presented. This method enables the results of different experiments to be compared by calculating standarized rates of mobility of each enzyme band relative to the positions of reference variants coded LDH-8 or GPI-9.

T SCHOLZ, O DITRICH
Folia Parasitologica 38[4] 309-318 (1991)
In 51 reptiles of 17 species from Vientiane province in Laos, three species of trematodes, Paradistomum geckonum, Encyclometra bungara, and Postorchigenes majeedi were recorded for the first time. The snake Enhydris plumbea represents a new definitive host of E. bungara; this parasite has hitherto been recorded only in India. Mabuya multifasciata is a new definitive host of P. geckonum; Gekko gecko, Hemidactylus frenatus and Cosymbotus platyurus of P. majeedi. The study of P. geckonum, specimens from different hosts revealed great morphological and metrical variability within this species, particularly in the shape and size of body. These morphological...
POLYPLAX SPINULOSA INFESTATION AND ANTIBODY-RESPONSE IN VARIOUS STRAINS OF LABORATORY RATS
P VOLF
Folia Parasitologica 38[4] 355-362 (1991)
The degree and duration of Polyplax spinulosa Burm. infestation depend on the sex, age and genetic factors of the host. Various rat strains differ in the severity of lousiness. Host grooming is an important factor in the rat-louse relationship. After longlasting infestations rats become partially resistant. Serum antibody level depends mainly on the severity and the duration of the infestation, and follows the dynamics of louse population. Serum antibodies have no direct negative effect on lice.
EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE ON THE INVIVO AND INVITRO MULTIPLICATION OF TRYPANOSOMA-DANILEWSKYI LAVERAN ET MESNIL
AKMN ISLAM, PTK WOO
Folia Parasitologica 39[1] 1-12 (1992)
Temperature directly affected the in vivo and in vitro multiplication of Trypanosoma danilewskyi Laveran et Mesnil. The parasitemia in experimentally infected goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) increased rapidly at 20-degrees-C and reached its peak in 3 to 5 weeks post-infection. The multiplication was slower at 10-degrees-C. The parasitemia declined after the peak at 20-degrees-C. Lowering of temperature of the infected goldfish from 20-degrees-C to 10-degrees-C slowed multiplication of the parasite. Similarly, raising of temperature of infected fish from 10-degrees-C to 20-degrees-C resulted in rapid multiplication of the parasite. These were confirmed...
FINE-STRUCTURE OF SPERMATOGENESIS IN MONOPISTHOCOTYLEAN MONOGENEANS (MACROGYRODACTYLUS-POLYPTERI - PSEUDODACTYLOGYRUS-BINI)
G SCHMAHL, M ELWASILA
Folia Parasitologica 39[1] 19-31 (1992)
The development of spermatozoa in the monopisthocotylean fish gill flukes, Macrogyrodactylus polypteri Malmberg and Pseudodactylogyrus bini Kikuchi was investigated by means of light and transmission electron microscopy. In M. polypteri spermatogonia give rise by successive mitoses to primary spermatocytes clearly characterized by the presence of synaptonemal complexes. In M. polypteri, spermatocytes are characterized by a fine, dense intranuclear inclusion connected by a small strand to the nuclear membrane, and by the appearance of several Golgi complexes. Both in M. polypteri and P. bini a syncytial mass of spermatids develops, which gives rise...

MORAVEC F, MOLLER H, HEEGER T
Folia Parasitologica 39[3] 227-234 (1992)
A new nematode species, Philometra robusta sp. n., is described from the female specimens collected from the abdominal cavity of the scribbled toadfish, Arothron mappa (Lesson) (Tetraodontidae, Tetraodontiformes), from coastal waters of Tawi-Tawi, Philippines. It is characterized mainly by its markedly large body (body length 275-450 mm, width 8-10 mm), arrangement and number of small cephalic papillae (eight papillae in outer circle and four in inner one), structure and length (2.4 2.6 mm) of the oesophagus, short ovaries, and presence of a pair of small subventral papilla-like projections on the ventrally curved caudal extremity. P. robusta is the...
AN EXPERIMENTAL TRANSMISSION OF PORCINE STRAINS OF BLASTOCYSTIS SP IN THE LABORATORY MICE AND GERBILS
PAKANDL M
Folia Parasitologica 39[4] 383-386 (1992)
Outbred laboratory mice were successfully infected with porcine strains of Blastocystis sp. using faecal stages as well as stages from fresh or passaged cultures. In contrast, inbred BALB/c mice and gerbils were only rarely infected and the intensity of their infection was mostly negligible. Blastocystis sp. was never observed inside the host cells. These results indicate a low host specifity of Blastocystis sp. as well as different sensitivity of investigated hosts to Blastocystis sp. infection.
2 NEW SPECIES OF THE GENUS GYRODACTYLUS NORDMANN, 1832 (MONOGENEA, GYRODACTYLIDAE) FROM ESOMUS-LONGIMANA (LUNEL) (CYPRINIFORMES, CYPRINIDAE) IN LAOS
ERGENS R, SCHOLZ T
Folia Parasitologica 39[4] 395-398 (1992)
Two new species of Gyrodactylus, G. esomi sp. n. and G. kottelati sp. n. are described from Esomus longimana (Lunel) caught in the Vientiane Province, Laos. G. esomi sp. n. differs from its nearest relative G. gnathopogonis Ergens et Gussev, 1975 by the smaller size of the anchors and a different shape of the marginal hooks. G. seravschani Osmanov, 1965 and G. sprostonae Ling Mo-en, 1962 are the closest apparent relatives of G. kottelati sp. n. but differ from this species principally in the shape of the marginal hook proper and the shape of the ventral bar shield.
