Description of Eimeria vejdovskyi sp.n. and redescription of Eimeria media Kessel, 1929 from the rabbit.
M Pakandl
Folia Parasitologica 35[1] 1 (1988)
On the basis of oocyst morphology, endogenous cycles, prepatent period, and enzyme analysis, Eimeria media was found to be a composite species, representing two independent species differing from all other species of rabbit coccidia. One of them was designated Eimeria media Kessel, 1929 and the other was described as a new species, Eimeria vejdovskyi. E. media has relatively larger oocysts (mean size 32.88 X 19.19 micron), the endogenous development takes place in the epithelium of the ileum or of posterior jejunum, and the developmental stages gradually migrate from the crypts towards the tips of villi. E. media forms three asexual generations, the...
Acquired resistance of pigeons to Argas polonicus larvae.
F Dusbábek, V Skárková-Spaková
Folia Parasitologica 35[1] 77-84 (1988)
The acquired resistance of pigeons to Argas polonicus manifests itself in an adverse effect on the feeding and further development of larvae. After five subsequent infestations, the rejection of larvae reached 90-95% and the mean weight of fed larvae dropped down from 2.18 mg to 1.72 mg in the Polish tick population. There appeared also a tendency to more rapid feeding in larvae from later infestations. Also the percentage of moulted larvae decreased, probably as a result of insufficient blood meal taken by larvae on repeatedly challenged hosts. The hosts sensitized by larvae of Polish tick population manifested a higher tick resistance than those...

Antibody-mediated response of pigeons to Argas polonicus larval feeding and characterization of larval antigen.
F Dusbábek, S Lukes, V Matha, L Grubhoffer
Folia Parasitologica 36[1] 83-92 (1989)
Circulating antibodies to larval Argas polonicus antigen detected in the blood of pigeons by means of ELISA reach their highest level 3-6 days post-tick attachment. During 6-8 days post infestation when most larvae detach from their host, there is an abrupt drop of the antibody level in blood followed by second peak at day 10-15. During the secondary and subsequent infestations the dynamics of the antibody production is analogous, but the maximum absorbance values found are higher with each following infestation. This is in direct correlation with the growth of immune resistance of hosts. The transfer of immunoglobulins of resistant pigeons produces...
Life cycle of Eimeria coecicola Cheissin, 1947.
M Pakandl
Folia Parasitologica 36[2] 97 (1989)
Life cycle of Eimeria coecicola was studied in experimentally infected rabbits by light microscopy and by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. First and second generation meronts developed in the vermiform appendix; third and fourth generation meronts were located in the epithelium of the ileum. Gametogony developed again in the vermiform appendix. The prepatent period was 9 days. New data were obtained by the study of asexual reproduction. First generation meronts were first observed 4 days post infection (DPI), which is relatively late in comparison with other species of rabbit coccidia. Sporozoites were found in lymphatic follicles of...
Continuous culture of Plasmodium falciparum asexual stages in "normal" air atmosphere.
P Mirovský
Folia Parasitologica 36[2] 107-112 (1989)
The growth of six strains of Plasmodium falciparum in 5% CO2, 5% O2, 90% N2 and normal air atmosphere was determined daily by microscopical examination of blood films. All strains were able to grow in flasks without additional gas mixture but significantly lower parasitaemia was observed within the first five days of cultivation. Attempt at cultivating in petri dishes without candle jar technique failed but parasites survived in plasticine sealed dishes. The cultivation in air cannot be recommended for cultures initiated from cryopreserved material or low parasitaemia (0.1-0.3%) cultures.

Regeneration in mouse skeletal muscle injured by Trichinella larvae.
D Hulínská, M Grim, M Vojtísek, J Zenka
Folia Parasitologica 36[2] 185 (1989)
During the infection caused by Trichinella pseudospiralis serious damage to muscles is partly compensated with regeneration process. Short, thin fibrillae with central position of the nuclei--regenerating myotubes originate 20--40th day post infection in endomysial tubes remaining after damaged muscle fibres, left by migrating larva. On the 10th day post infection in the vicinity of moving larva activation of nuclei and increased origin of satellite cells under basal membrane occur. With development of the infection endothelia in the vicinity of altered fibrillae are increasing in number but there is small inflammatory and fibroproductive reaction...
The pathogenicity of Cryptosporidium parvum Tyzzer, 1912 and C. Baileyi Current, Upton et Haynes, 1986 for chickens.
L Palkovic, V Marousek
Folia Parasitologica 36[3] 209 (1989)
Clinical symptoms and pathological-morphological changes in the respiratory tract of chickens inoculated with Cryptosporidium parvum were described for the first time and compared with those induced by Cryptosporidium baileyi. Intratracheal inoculation with these two species caused symptoms of a respiratory tract disease in all chicken, but a disease of the digestive tract or death did not occur in any case. Pathological and morphological changes were observed only in the respiratory system and were characterized by petechiae in the mucous of larynx, trachea, primary bronchi and in the wall of air sacs in chickens infected with C. parvum, or by diffuse...
An unusual localization of developmental stages of Cryptosporidium parvum Tyzzer, 1912 in the cells of small intestine of a gnotobiotic piglet.
B Koudela, J Vítovec, J Sterba, P Milácek
Folia Parasitologica 36[3] 219 (1989)
In a gnotobiotic piglet infected with 50.10(6) oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum, developmental stages of the parasite were found in the duodenum, anterior jejunum and middle jejunum on the first day post infection (1 DPI). During the studies of the ultrastructure, trophozoites and meronts of C. parvum were encountered in the microvillous zone of enterocytes, and the outer membrane of parasites was a continuation of the membrane of microvilli. Unusual was the attachment of C. parvum trophozoite on the opening of a goblet cell, as well as a meront localized in the cytoplasm in the enterocyte of anterior jejunum. These findings show that C. parvum is...
Ultrastructure of the tail of Echinostoma revolutum cercaria.
Z Zdárská, V Nasincová, J Valkounová
Folia Parasitologica 36[3] 239 (1989)
The ultrastructure of the tail fins and muscles of Echinostoma revolutum cercaria is described. The longitudinal muscles consist of a primitive type of transversely striated muscle fibres with a well-developed sarcoplasmic reticulum in the Z-band. The fins are formed by a longitudinal tegument fold containing the same components as the remaining part of the tail tegument. The difference between the body and tail tegument is discussed.

Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 331-340 (1989)
Thymalin (Thymarin) and T-activin--thymic preparations of polypeptidic character--were used for influencing the parasitic infection in a model system mouse--Taenia crassiceps. A single subcutaneous application of 100 micrograms of Thymalin per mouse at the day of infection resulted in a decrease (by 54.9%) in the number of cysticerci in peritoneal cavity of experimental mice compared with the controls. Administration of Thymalin with T. crassiceps larval homogenate at various intervals before and after infection resulted in a statistically significant increase of the level of specific antibodies in the serum of infected mice, this increase, however,...
The interaction of fish trypanosome culture forms with some lectins.
P Zajícek, H Pecková
Folia Parasitologica 37[1] 1-7 (1990)
The interactions of fish trypanosome culture forms with 11 purified lectins were compared using the agglutination test in microwell plates. Altogether, ten stocks of ten different freshwater fish species were examined. Three basic types of cell-lectin interactions were observed on the microscopical level. The strong agglutination of all stocks regardless their original host was found in the presence of Con A, PSA, RCA60, and RCA120, which implies the presence of relatively high amounts of sugar residues of D-mannose and D-galactose in the surface of culture forms of these parasites. Weak agglutinations of some stocks were observed in the presence of...
Entamoeba histolytica--the virulence of imported strains.
M Giboda, O Ditrich, N Vrchotová, J Gutvirth, P Noll, J Sterba
Folia Parasitologica 37[1] 9-19 (1990)
We tested the virulence of 15 strains of Entamoeba histolytica, imported to Czechoslovakia, by intracaecal inoculation of laboratory rats. According to the scoring system of Neal, none of the 15 strains possessed the virulence index greater than 2. This indicates that all the organisms tested should be classified as avirulent. However, it should be noted that all the strains produced infection of the caecum and thus should be considered infective for rat. For 7 strains, isoenzyme patterns were determined for PGM, HK and ME. One imported strain, obtained from student from Congo, demonstrated isoenzyme pattern for PGM and HK indicated that the strain...

Mechanism and pathway of glucose transportation in a digenetic trematode Ceylonocotyle scoliocoelium.
M Bose, C R Maity, S K Ghosal, G Majumdar
Folia Parasitologica 37[2] 151 (1990)
The mode of absorption, kinetics and mechanism of transportation of 14C--glucose in a digenetic trematode, Ceylonocotyle scoliocoelium were studied by culturing the trematodes under in vitro condition in Hank's saline supplemented with radioactive tracer. It was then followed separately by autoradiography and liquid scintillation. Autoradiographic study reveals that the maximum amount of glucose uptake occurs through cuticle whereas the role of intestinal canal is insignificant in this respect. Maximum cpm is recorded in the precipitate followed by TCA treatment. This is due to the presence of a protein-bound 14C-glucose which is assumed as the carrier...
Occurrence of the tick Ixodes ricinus (L.) under the conditions of anthropopressure.
M Daniel, V Cerný
Folia Parasitologica 37[2] 183-186 (1990)
The authors report on their findings of the tick Ixodes ricinus under urban conditions of Prague. The concrete data were taken as a basis for a general scheme of possible occurrence of this species in various town parts, determined by the state of vegetation and presence of large mammals. Discussed are also conditions for I. ricinus maintenance in another type of anthropogenous landscape, the spoil banks resulting from brown coal exploitation.
Effect of cortisone on Toxoplasma gondii infection studied by electron microscopy.
D Hulínská, J Sýkora, M Zástera
Folia Parasitologica 37[3] 207-212 (1990)
The ultrastructural features of cortisone effect on the early development and formation of Toxoplasma gondii tissue cysts were examined in the brains of experimental mice on days 8-47 post inoculation. The cortisone was injected subcutaneously into mice twice a week: 1) at the early acute phase, 5 days post infection, and 2) at the transition phase of development, 12 days post infection. The disturbed regulation of the host-parasite relationship due to the effect of cortisone showed itself in an increase of T. gondii tachyzoites, cystozoites, and cysts not only by intracellular but also by as yet not described extracellular division. The persisting...
