Contribution to the question of relationships between Enterobius vermicularis (L.) and inflammatory processes in the appendix.
J Sterba, M Vlcek, P Noll, F Vorel
Folia Parasitologica 32[3] 231-235 (1985)
We evaluated a bioptic material of appendices from the hospital in Ceské Budejovice, obtained from 1977-1981. Of these, 2173 appendices were removed as cases of a clinical appendicitis, 788 for preventive reasons. In the cases of a clinical appendicitis with the incidence of pin worms in the appendix, the histological picture displayed significantly more chronical, inflammatory changes than in acute cases (test chi 2), while in cases of a clinical appendicitis without the presence of pin worms, we found more acute than chronical forms of inflammations. Our results are supported also by an analysis of preventively removed appendices, where again more...

The efficacy of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis against larvae of the blackfly Odagmia ornata (Meig.) (Simuliidae) at low temperatures.
J Olejnícek, V Matha, J Weiser
Folia Parasitologica 32[3] 271-277 (1985)
The effect of the suspension of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis spores on larvae of the blackfly Odagmia ornata was studied in the laboratory and under field conditions of a natural biotope in southern Bohemia. The preparation Moskitur was used and its effect was tested in laboratory at temperatures 0.1-2.9 degrees C and 17-19 degrees C. Although O. ornata larvae were able to filter feed on a lethal dose of the preparation even at a lower temperature than 2.9 degrees C, no marked manifestation of mortality was observed at low temperatures in comparison with a control sample.

Folia Parasitologica 33[1] 39 (1986)
In the present study, the tissue reaction of the brain, skeletal muscles and heart in experimental C. bovis infection of the reindeer is described. There is non-purulent cysticercal leptomeningites with formation of multinucleate symplasms in the cerebral meninges, and lymphocytic encephalitis in the superficial layers of the cerebral cortex. The tissue reaction around the morphologically differentiated cysticercus in the meningeal location is similar to that in muscle cysticercosis of cattle. In muscles and heart, larvae die very soon after infection and they are resorbed in the course of formation of fibroplastic granulation tissue around them. C....
Autoradiographic study of kinetics of spermatogenesis in Ascaris lumbricoides.
D P Mukhopadhyay, C R Maity, A Sengupta, S Ghosal, G Majumdar
Folia Parasitologica 33[1] 61-64 (1986)
The kinetics of meiosis and spermiogenesis in Ascaris lumbricoides in vitro was studied by keeping 12 mature males in nutrient medium. The spermatocytes were made radioactive by supplementing the medium with 3H-thymidine for 2 h, following which they were transferred to fresh medium without 3H-TdR. The nematodes were then killed for preparing histological and squash preparations of the testis. An analysis of the migration of "hot" spermatocytes till the formation of mature spermatozoa, in Kodak AR-10 autoradiograms, suggested that the duration of meiosis and spermiogenesis was a little more than 5.5 and 7.6 days, respectively. The total duration of...

Folia Parasitologica 33[1] 87 (1986)
Four infectious agents were isolated from the ticks Ixodes ricinus (L.) collected in the recreational area and park-forest of Prague. On the basis of cultivation, staining, biochemical, serologic properties, pathogenicity for animals and histological tests they were identified as Francisella tularensis with the following features: they are short, gram-negative rods of approximate dimensions of 0.3 X 0.8 micron, growing in enriched media after 3-4 day incubation at 37 degrees C. They form small circular, at first transparent, later greyish turbid colonies with regular rims. They are little active biochemically. They are susceptible to streptomycin and...
Histopathological changes in the liver tissue of house mouse and common vole during sarcocytosis.
V Skárková
Folia Parasitologica 33[2] 115 (1986)
The asexual reproduction of Sarcocystis dispersa was studied in the liver of the house mouse. Histopathological examinations revealed infection of parenchymal cells with the parasite and diffuse cellular infiltrations with the presence of polymorphonuclear cells, monocytes and eosinophilic leukocytes. The volume and number of cellular infiltrates increased gradually from day 3 till day 10 p.i. Then appeared necrotic foci and both phenomena reached the maximum on days 10-12 p.i. On days 21-34 p.i., no changes occurred in the tissue and the liver healed without scars. The infection of common vole with Sarcocystis cernae sporocysts caused cellular infiltrations...
Study of cytochromes from mitochondria of Taenia crassiceps (Zeder, 1800) cysticerci.
J Zenka, J Prokopic
Folia Parasitologica 33[2] 145-148 (1986)
Cytochrome components of mitochondria from Taenia crassiceps cysticerci were studied by difference spectrophotometry (at 22 degrees C). The following concentrations of cytochromes (expressed in nmol X mg-1 protein) were found: 0.132 (cytochrome b), 0.083 (cytochrome c), and 0.0856 (cytochrome aa3). The participation of aerobic processes in the general production of energy is discussed and the results are compared with literary data obtained in cytochrome studies of other parasitic worms.

Folia Parasitologica 33[4] 297-300 (1986)
The morphology of oocysts of E. media Kessel, 1929, has been studied and two types have been found. Significant differences were observed in length of the oocysts (average values 29.05 microns with type I and 32.88 microns with type II), in width of the micropyle (5.21 and 3.72 microns, respectively) and in width of the sporocysts (6.67 and 8.00 microns). Marked differences were found even in the shape of the residual bodies of the sporocysts and in the structure of the oocyst wall in the region of the micropyle.
A comparative study of the ultrastructure of intestine in Protostrongylus commutatus and Protostrongylus rufescens (Protostrongylidae: Nematoda).
A Gutteková
Folia Parasitologica 33[4] 337 (1986)
A comparison of the ultrastructure of intestinal cells of two taxonomically very close nematode species, Protostrongylus commutatus and Protostrongylus rufescens, revealed many interesting facts. The concentration of mitochondria in the basal part of intestinal cells, which is conspicuous particularly in P. rufescens, indicates that the nutrients penetrate also through the cuticle. An enormous occurrence of granular endoplasmic reticulum in the intestinal cells of P. commutatus shows an excessive protein synthesis. It may be supposed that the proteins will be used mainly for the construction of sex products, which are extremely abundant in P. commutatus....

Penetration of ovicidal fungus Verticillium chlamydosporium through the Ascaris lumbricoides egg-shells.
H Lýsek, D Krajcí
Folia Parasitologica 34[1] 57 (1987)
The course of penetration of the ovicidal fungus Verticillium chlamydosporium Goddard through the Ascaris lumbricoides egg-shells was studied in electron miorographs. The contact area between the egg and the fungus is smooth at the stage of the contact of the ovicidal fungus with the egg surface, as well as at the stage of adhesion. No special attaching organs are formed which indicates that no mechanical penetration of the fungal hypha through the egg-shells is involved. Traces of enzymatical activity of the fungus penetrating upright through the egg-shells can be observed during the penetration stage proper. At the consumption stage, the branching...
Geographic distribution of Bhanja virus.
Z Hubálek
Folia Parasitologica 34[1] 77-86 (1987)
A review on the geographic distribution, vectors and hosts of Bhanja virus (Bunyaviridae) is based on reports about: isolations of the virus; antibody surveys. Bhanja virus has been isolated in 15 countries of Asia, Africa and Europe, and antibodies against it have been detected in 15 additional countries. Vector range includes ticks of the family Ixodidae (subfam. Amblyomminae; not subfam. Ixodinae): 13 species of 6 genera (Haemaphysalis, Dermacentor, Hyalomma, Amblyomma, Rhipicephalus and Boophilus) yielded the virus. Bhanja virus has only rarely been isolated from vertebrates (Atelerix, Xerus, Ovis, Bos; possibly bats), though antibodies have been...

Folia Parasitologica 34[1] 87-92 (1987)
The efficacy of the drugs flubendazole, levamisole, and their combination was studied against Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection in mice. The drugs were evaluated on day 15 post infection. The efficacy was assessed by using single-dose and 5-dose treatment schedules. Flubendazole was effective at 25 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg when given each day for five days. Levamisole at a dose rate of 200 mg/kg was completely effective in a single treatment. The combined therapy of levamisole (25 mg/kg) and flubendazole (15 mg/kg) produced 100% efficacy. Both drugs given prior to experimental infection showed no prophylactic activity.
Comparative studies on the morphology, histology, and histochemistry of metacestodes (Hymenolepididae, Dilepididae and Dipylidiidae).
J Valkounová
Folia Parasitologica 34[2] 117-128 (1987)
Histological and histochemical methods were used for the studies on 12 species of metacestodes of the genera Coronacanthus, Diorchis, Diplopylidium, Fimbriaria, Hymenolepis, Microsomacanthus, Rodentotaenia, and Triodontolepis. Two basic types of larvae, cysticercoid and cercoscolex, were found. The cyst structure is identical or similar in the cysticercoids using the same group of intermediate hosts (gammarus, planktonic crustaceans, coprophagous beetles, and terrestrial snails). The morphological structure of scolex and neck is the same as in adult cestodes. The length and number of hooks are definitive in morphologically differentiated metacestodes,...

Studies on the life cycle of Cryptosporidium coccidia in experimentally infected chickens.
I Pavlásek
Folia Parasitologica 34[3] 193 (1987)
Experimental infections of 7-28-day-old chickens with Cryptosporidium oocysts isolated from spontaneously infected chickens demonstrated that the endogenous development of this parasite takes place simultaneously in the organs of digestive, respiratory and excretory systems and in bursa of Fabricius. It was demonstrated for the first time that the oocysts of Cryptosporidium are shed through the respiratory tract into the beak cavity. A novel rapid and simple method has been developed for the detection of oocysts. Its principle is the rinsing of the beak cavity. This method enabled to isolate the oocysts from experimentally infected chickens and immediately...
Experimental verification of the effect of physical condition of Gobio gobio (L.) on the growth rate of micropopulations of Gyrodactylus gobiensis Gläser, 1974 (Monogenea).
M Gelnar
Folia Parasitologica 34[3] 211-217 (1987)
It has been verified experimentally that the growth rate of G. gobiensis micropopulations is markedly affected by the physical condition of the host (Gobio gobio). If the fish were weakened by 50% oxygen deficiency and lack of food, the number of parasites increased much more rapidly than on the fish also unfed but kept in water with 100% oxygen content. If the fish weakened by oxygen deficiency were intensively fed, the growth of the parasite micropopulations started to slow down after 4-5 days. When the feeding was stopped, the number of parasites increased again after 10-11 days. These time shifts seem to be associated with the physical condition...
Haemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies against arboviruses of the families Togaviridae and Bunyaviridae in birds caught in southern Moravia, Czechoslovakia.
Z Juricová, Z Hubálek, J Halouzka, J Pellantová, J Chytil
Folia Parasitologica 34[3] 281-284 (1987)
A total of 295 birds belonging to 19 species of 7 families of wild Passeriformes were examined by haemagglutination-inhibition test. The birds were caught for an international research program "Balt" at the time of autumn migration (August-September 1984). Their blood sera were examined for antibodies against 6 arbovirus antigens of the genera Alphavirus (Sindbis-SIN) and Flavivirus (tick-borne encephalitis-TBE, West Nile-WN) and family Bunyaviridae (Tahyna-TAH, Calovo-CVO and Bhanja-BHA). Antibodies against all studied viruses were detected at different frequencies: SIN 6.4%, TBE 7.1%, WN 9.7%, TAH 16.3%, CVO 12.1%, and BHA 1.0%.
Effect of variation in temperature on development of Plasmodium berghei (NK 65 strain) in Anopheles stephensi.
M Rastogi, N L Pal, A B Sen
Folia Parasitologica 34[4] 289-297 (1987)
Effect of temperature on the sporogonic cycle of Plasmodium berghei (NK 65) has been studied in vector Anopheles stephensi. To determine the optimum temperature for development of parasite, fed mosquitoes were kept at 16 +/- 1 degree C, 19 +/- 1 degree C and 26 +/- 1 degree C temperature. The temperature 19 +/- 1 degree C was found to be optimum for normal development of parasite within the vector. Sporulated oocysts were observed on the 10th day post feed and salivary glands were loaded with thousands of sporozoites on day 14. Temperature 16 +/- 1 degree C, though did not exert any deleterious effect on the morphology of parasites it delayed the development...
