Possible role of birds and ticks in the dissemination of Bhanja virus.

Z Hubálek, V Cerný, P Rödl

Folia Parasitologica 29[1] 85-95 (1982)

Several wild birds (4 Fringilla coelebs, 1 Coccothraustes coccothraustes and 2 Erithacus rubecula) were inoculated subcutaneously with Bhanja virus (BHAV). No clinical symptoms of infection were observed in any of the birds; a low viremia was demonstrated only in C. coccothraustes (2 and 4 days p.i.), seroconversion in all birds. BHAV was not isolated from organs 32 days p.i. Consequently, the tested birds do not seem to serve as "amplifying hosts" of BHAV. The paper includes a survey of geographic distribution of Bhanja virus and a list of its vectors. A hypothesis on the indirect dissemination of BHAV by birds by means of infected ticks is discussed....

Aspects of evolutionary parasitology.

B I Lebedev

Folia Parasitologica 29[2] 97-105 (1982)

Parasitic animals make up one fifth to one fourth of all known animal species. There are many correct definitions of the parasitism, but the determinations as a qualitatively specific form of existence of organisms are logically well-grounded only within the concepts of symbiosis. The parasitism opposes with the predatoriness which cannot be ascribed to symbiotic types of vital activity. The problems of the population and niche are discussed in the present paper. An analysis is given of the parasitological niche the parameters of which coincide with the phenomena characteristic for the specificity. A somewhat changed definition of parasitism is proposed....

Blood parasites of birds in Central Europe. 4. Trypanosoma, "Atoxoplasma", Microfilariae and other rare haematozoa.

J Kucera

Folia Parasitologica 29[2] 107-113 (1982)

The present paper, the last in the series on avian blood parasites in Central Europe, summarizes the data on parasites of the genera Trypanosoma, "Atoxoplasma", "Lankesterella", microfilariae and spirochaetes found in this region. Trypanosomes occur most frequently in Columbiformes, Corvidae, Galliformes and Strigiformes, while "Aloxoplasma" is encountered only in passerines, most frequently in Fringillidae, Passeridae and Hirundinidae; "Lankesterella" is to be found only in two species of passerines. Microfilariae occur in Corvidae and Galliformes, and spirochaetes were encountered in the blood smears from four birds only. All these organisms are...

Comparative electron microscopic and cytochemical studies on the cuticle and the hypodermis of Trichinella nativa (Britov et Boev, 1972) and T. pseudospiralis (Garkavi, 1972).

D Hulinská, B Shaikenov

Folia Parasitologica 29[2] 159 (1982)

Using cytochemical methods, we disclosed both in the cuticle and the hypodermis of two-day-old females of T. nativa and T. pseudospiralis, in the area of the oesophagus, these substances: Cystine-containing proteins of the SS group, carbohydrates, acidic mucopolysaccharides (AMS), acid phosphatase (ACP) and a nonspecific esterase (NE). A regularly transverse striation (striae) in the cuticle reacts strongly with the method for cystine-containing proteins, weakly for carbohydrates, and negatively for AMS. Striae are present in most parts of the cuticle of T, nativa. By contrast, the amorphous cuticle of T. pseudospiralis is not striated, it stains for...

Intravenous infection of mice with Naegleria fowleri.

R G May, D T John

Folia Parasitologica 29[3] 201 (1982)

Naegleria fowleri produced fatal meningoencephalitis in mice following intravenous (i.v.) inoculation. Amebae were present in the peripheral circulation for 120 minutes after i.v. inoculation with a dose of 10(7) trophozoites per mouse. Amebae were cultured from and observed in brain (days 1-21), lung (days 1-12), and liver and kidney (days 1-5). Infected mice exhibited weight loss, leukocytosis, reduced lymphocyte/neutrophil ratio, neurologic symptoms, and mortality. Histologically, the disease was characterized by an acute, hemorrhagic, necrotizing meningoencephalitis. Although amebae were detected in tissues other than brain, pathologic involvement...

Indirect haemagglutination reaction with Sarcocystis dispersa antigen.

L Cerva, Z Cerná

Folia Parasitologica 29[3] 219-225 (1982)

A description is given of the preparation of antigen from Sarcocystis dispersa cystozoites and the procedure of the indirect haemagglutination test (IHA). The antibodies against this antigen were detected in experimentally infected mice from day 20 p.i. (1: 640). In the following weeks the antibody titres reached the value of 1: 40,960. The sera of pigs, sheep and horses spontaneously infected with other Sarcocystis species reacted with this antigen in low titres only. The bovine sera gave negative reactions even in cases when Sarcocystis cysts were present in the muscles of the examined animals. A possible application of IHA for the research and diagnostic...

Folia Parasitologica 29[3] 253 (1982)

A total of 110 bulls coming from a farm where cysticercosis repeatedly occurred were examined by means of indirect haemagglutination (IHA), microprecipitation in agar (MPA), and indirect immunofluorescence reaction (IFR). Cysticercosis (isolated cysts with live or dead cysticerci) was detected in 29 of them at post-mortem examination. Among the 29 infected animals, positive reactions were obtained in 37.9% with IHA, 51.7% with MPA and 10.3% with IFR. The remaining animals were negative. Of 82 animals giving negative reactions with IHA, 22% harboured cysticerci at post-mortem examination. Of 70 animals negative with MPA, 20% were infected with cysticerci...

Chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis of Angiostrongylus malaysiensis infection in rats with levamisole and mebendazole.

S Ambu, B H Kwa, J W Mak, K I Singh

Folia Parasitologica 29[4] 361-364 (1982)

The chemoprophylactic and chemotherapeutic effects of levamisole and mebendazole on Angiostrongylus malaysiensis infection in rats were studied. Both drugs were ineffective in preventing infection while the post-infection treatment showed 100% efficacy. Furthermore, levamisole and mebendazole when given in combination appeared to have an antagonistic effect.

Tissue reaction in experimental cysticercosis of sheep and goats caused by infection with Taenia saginata eggs.

K Blazek, J Schramlová

Folia Parasitologica 30[2] 131 (1983)

In experimental infection of sheep with Taenia saginata eggs the intensity of infection may be influenced by the age of the animal at the time of infection, the height of the infection dose and the mode of infection (perorally in capsules or by means of an oesophagus tube). In non-adequate intermediate hosts of T. saginata (sheep, goats), the cellular reaction around the young cysticercus is very strong, but it differs from the reaction known in bovine cysticercosis: large macrophages, which migrate to the larva at the early phase of infection in cattle, are lacking in sheep and goats. Neither the new formation of collagen in the granulation tissue...

A study has been made of the morphological, histological and histochemical characteristics of spicules and gubernaculum in Haemonchus contortus (Rud., 1803). The correlation coefficients of body length and left and right spicule lengths, left and right spicule lengths, and the distance of barb from the distal end of left and right spicule ends have been found to be statistically significant while the correlation coefficient of body length and gubernaculum length has been found to be non-significant. The sclerotized part of each spicule is composed of three layers differing in density. The shaft of the spicule possesses dorsal and ventral wings which...

Morphology of Cysticercus bovis during its development.

J Schramlová, K Blazek

Folia Parasitologica 30[4] 335 (1983)

On day 14 p.i., C. bovis is a spherical formation without cavity (in neonatally infected calves, the cavity already starts to form). On day 21 p.i., a conical anlage of the scolex is formed and on day 23 p.i., it bears a conspicuous invagination of the tegument. On day 28 p.i., the scolex with spiral canal, sucker anlages and single calcareous bodies is developed. On day 42 p.i., the suckers are fully differentiated and the calcareous bodies in scolex parenchyma are distributed up to below the level of suckers. On day 55 p.i., the calcareous bodies are present in the morphologically differentiated scolex even below the suckers. The authors assume that...
