DEVELOPMENT OF KHAWIA-SINENSIS HSU, 1935 (CESTODA, CARYOPHYLLIDEA) IN THE FISH HOST
T SCHOLZ
Folia Parasitologica 38[3] 225-234 (1991)
The development of the tapeworm Khawia sinensis has been observed up to the stage of sexually mature parasites releasing eggs in an experimentally infected definitive host (Cyprinus carpio) at 15-16-degrees-C. Juvenile, maturing, adult and gravid tapeworms were found 2-12, 19-24, 36-62, and 78-91 days post infection, respectively. No apparent size difference between tape-worms from carp kept at 20-22-degrees-C, examined 1-16 days post infection, and those from 15-16-degrees-C was observed. In naturally infected and fed carp, kept at 21-22-degrees-C, some tapeworms survived till the end of experiment (44 days) while in unfed fish they survived only...
SUSCEPTIBILITY OF ADULT AEDES-AEGYPTI (L) AND CULEX-QUINQUEFASCIATUS SAY (DIPTERA, CULICIDAE) TO DDT IN KAMPUCHEA
M KOHN
Folia Parasitologica 38[3] 269-274 (1991)
The susceptibility to 4 % DDT was tested in adult Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes collected in houses in Phnom Penh (Kampuchea). It was found that in spite of the fact that insecticide treatment had not been performed for many years, the populations of both species as a whole remained resistant. However, there were some differences in the susceptibility between males and females and between engorged and hungry females. Possible causes of these differences are discussed in the present paper.
FLAGELLA NUMBER AMONG NAEGLERIA FLAGELLATES
D T JOHN, T B COLE, R A JOHN
Folia Parasitologica 38[4] 289-295 (1991)
Scanning electron microscopy was used to determine the number of flagella on the flagellates of Naegleria australiensis, N. fowleri, N. gruberi, and N. jadini. Although the majority of flagellates had 2 flagella, there was considerable variation among individual cells. The number of flagella per flagellate varied from 1-8, with 2.4 being the average number per cell. For the different species, the average number of flagella per cell ranged from 2.0 in N. jadini to 3.1 for N. australiensis. The greatest amount of variation occurred in N. australiensis, with only 43 % of the cells having 2 flagella. By contrast, 92 % of N. fowleri cells had 2 flagella....
OCCURRENCE OF BLASTOCYSTIS SP IN PIGS
M PAKANDL
Folia Parasitologica 38[4] 297-301 (1991)
The occurrence of Blastocystis sp. was monitored in pip of various age from 5 pig farms in Southern Bohemia. Prevalence was determined especially via cultivation in modified nutrient broth LES. In sucking pigs up to 2 days old Blastocystis sp. was not found; from 3 days Blastocystis sp. persists throughout the pig life. In droppings and in cultures there both vacuolar and granular forms were observed. Ameboid forms were not found. In culture ultrastructure was observed by transmission electron microscopy. Individual cells of Blastocystis sp. contained a central body, nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, rarely a Golgi complex and numerous mitochondria....
MICROSPALACINAE, A NEW SUBFAMILY OF THE FEATHER MITE FAMILY ALLOPTIDAE GAUD (ACARINA, ANALGOIDEA)
W T ATYEO, J GAUD
Folia Parasitologica 38[4] 327-343 (1991)
Microspalacinae subfam. n. (Analgoidea, Alloptidae) is established for the feather mite genus Microspalax Megnin et Trouessart (= Connivelobus Dubinin, new synonymy). Morphologies of the species are described and illustrated with line drawings and SEM micrographs, and taxonomical comments are given for named species. The mites are known from shearwaters (Procellariidae) and stormpetrels (Hydrobatidae); host associations are discussed. The alloptid subfamily Thysanocercinae Atyeo et Peterson is elevated to familial rank.
TOLYPOCLADIUM-TERRICOLA SP-N A NEW MOSQUITO-KILLING SPECIES OF THE GENUS TOLYPOCLADIUM GAMS (HYPHOMYCETES)
J WEISER, V MATHA, A JEGOROV
Folia Parasitologica 38[4] 363-369 (1991)
A new entomopathogenic species of the genus Tolypocladium, T terricola is described from a soil sample from Finland. From other known Tolypocladium species, T. terricola differs in morphology, production of secondary metabolites and possession of relatively strong mosquitocidal activity. The fungus is characterized by broad oval conidia (2.5 x 2-mu-m) with one pointed end which are produced in grape-like clusters and are not firmly adherent. When treated with T. terricola, mosquito larvae show typical features of intoxication characterized by the concentration of larvae in the centre of cup, hanging by their siphons on the surface.

KARYOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF CARYOPHYLLAEUS-LATICEPS (PALLAS, 1781) (CESTODA, CARYOPHYLLIDEA)
PETKEVICIUTE R, KUPERMAN BI
Folia Parasitologica 39[2] 115-121 (1992)
Mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of Caryophyllaeus laticeps (Pallas) from Rybinsk reservoir were studied using air-drying techniques. it was established that the diploid set contains 20 metacentric chromosomes. The chromosomes are large - their mean absolute length ranges from 3.00 to 12.90-mu-m. The last pair of small homologues comprises only 3.4 % of the total length of the complement. One specimen of C. laticeps with 2n = 21 (trisomic after the last pair of chromosomes) and one triploid specimen with 3n = 31 is described. Data on the comparative karyology of caryophyltids are discussed.
HOST SUBSTITUTION BY IXODES-PERSULCATUS (ACARI, IXODIDAE) LARVAE IN THE YEARS OF DEEP DEPRESSION IN THE ABUNDANCE OF SMALL MAMMALS
USPENSKY I, RUBINA M
Folia Parasitologica 39[2] 171-176 (1992)
A phenomenon of host substitution by the taiga tick (Ixodes persulcatus) larvae was observed by the authors in the western part of the Soviet Far East. In the montain forests where the highest abundance of L persulcatus was found, larvae usually fed on small mammals (primarily on Clethrionomys rufocanus, C rutilus and Apodemus speciosus). Numerous larvae were found, however, on the mountain hare (Lepus timidus) in the years of deep depression in the abundance of small mammals. The host substitution is considered as one of the mechanisms stabilizing the abundance of I. persulcatus adults.
REDESCRIPTION OF GYRODACTYLUS-TRUTTAE GLASER, 1974 (MONOGENEA, GYRODACTYLIDAE) FROM SALMO/TRUTTA M-FARIO L (CLUPEIFORMES, SALMONIDAE)
ERGENS R
Folia Parasitologica 39[3] 201-206 (1992)
On the basis of a re-examination of the type material Gyrodactylus truttae Glaser, 1974 from Salmo trutta morpha fario L. is redescribed and, at the same time, the view of Malmberg and Malmberg (1987) and Malmberg (1987, 1989) is confirmed to show that the original description of this species includes two different species. The problematic specimens of G. truttae sensu Ergens 1983 were found to be conspecific with G. truttae. On the basis of the shape and size of the marginal hook proper, the species illustrated by Glaser (1974, Fig. 6b) cannot be identified as G. derjavini Mikailov, 1975.
SUSCEPTIBILITY OF SOME SPECIES OF RODENTS TO RICKETTSIAE
REHACEK J, URVOLGYI J, KOCIANOVA E, JEDLICKA L
Folia Parasitologica 39[3] 265-284 (1992)
The present study was designed to test the susceptibility of free living rodents, viz Apodemus flavicollis, Microtus arvalis, Clethrionomys glareolus, Mus musculus, and outbred white mice from Dobra Voda farm, CSFR, to Coxiella burnetii, rickettsiae of the spotted fever group (Rickettsia sibirica, R. conorii, R. slovaca and R. akari) and rickettsiae of typhus group (R. typhi and R. prowazekii) by various routes of administration. The highest levels of antibodies to C. burnetti were found in A. flavicollis and M. arvalis inoculated intraperitoneally and intracerebrally. Antibodies to C. burnetii exerted peak levels between days 13 and 16 in contrast...
REDESCRIPTION OF PROTEOCEPHALUS-NEGLECTUS LA-RUE, 1911 (CESTODA, PROTEOCEPHALIDAE), A TROUT PARASITE, INCLUDING DESIGNATION OF ITS LECTOTYPE
HANZELOVA V, SCHOLZ T
Folia Parasitologica 39[4] 317-323 (1992)
The tapeworm Proteocephalus neglectus La Rue, 1911 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae), a common trout parasite in Europe, is redescribed on the basis of type specimens, comparative material from two different hosts (Salmo trutta m. fario and Oncorhynchus mykiss) and several geographical regions as well as on the literary data. The lectotype of this species is designated and the problem of the validity of Proteocephalus species parasitizing salmonid fish is briefly discussed.
