Demodex foveolator sp. n. (Acari: Demodicidae), a new epidermis-dwelling parasite of Crocidura suaveolens (Pallas, 1821).

V Bukva

Folia Parasitologica 31[1] 45-52 (1984)

A new species, Demodex foveolator, is described in all stages of the life cycle from the lesser white-toothed shrew, Crocidura suaveolens (Pallas, 1821). The species inhabits epidermal pits and apparently is a low-grade pathogen. A suggested trait of structural adaptations of epithelia-dwelling demodicids to their habitats is briefly discussed.

Muscle Sarcocystosis in pheasants and first records of the genus Sarcocystis in Phasianus colchicus Linné, 1758 in Czechoslovakia.

Z Cerná, Z Pecka

Folia Parasitologica 31[1] 85-88 (1984)

During examination of 41 pheasants from the vicinity of Jindrichův Hradec (South Bohemia) muscle sarcocystosis was found in 15 birds (i.e., in 36.5%). There were two types of sarcosporidia. Type I was recorded in 3 pheasants and possessed small cystozoites measuring 6 x 2 micrometers. There occurred also stages measuring 3-4 x 2 micrometers corresponding in their morphology to merozoites of the pre-cystic phase of reproduction. Type II was found in 12 birds and possessed large, lancet-shaped cystozoites measuring 16 x 2-3 micrometers. Type II conforms to the description of Sarcocystis sp. by Wenzel et al. (1982), whereas type I seems to represent a...

Folia Parasitologica 31[2] 147 (1984)

The ovary in 4-week-old worms contains undifferentiated germ cells. The oogonial differentiation, together with the appearance of some PAS-positive material in the ooplasm occurs in the ovary of 8-week-old worms. The ovary of 16-week-old worms contains only oogonia and oocytes and no germ cells. In adult worms, the oocytes reach the pachytene stage and further development is arrested at this stage. Nucleolar fragmentation and subsequent transport of nuclei to the ooplasm have been observed. The ooplasm contains nutritive material rich in proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. Its amount varies with different stages of oogenesis. The localization of various...

J Ryba, O Fuentes, V Danielová, A Fernández

Folia Parasitologica 31[2] 163-167 (1984)

A total of 8418 mosquitoes belonging to 16 species were collected in 11 localities of the Isla de la Juventud. The most abundant species was Aedes taeniorhynchus (92% of specimens collected). The species Wyeomyia vanduzeei and Mansonia nigricans were encountered on the island for the first time.

Susceptibility to DDT and some other insecticides of head lice (Pediculus capitis De Geer) in Czechoslovakia.

V Rupes, J Ledvinka, J Chmela, J Pinterová

Folia Parasitologica 31[2] 169-175 (1984)

For testing the susceptibility of the head louse to insecticides impregnated bunches of polyamide fibres, whose diameter resembled that of human hair (0.1 mm) were used. In this manner a low mortality of control lice collected from infected persons was obtained (2.9% after 16 hours of exposure). Even after 25 years of DDT use no apparent resistance could be demonstrated in 25 tested louse populations and cross resistance to permethrin in 7 tested populations. The diagnostic concentration for resistance to pp'-DDT was established at 1%. Of the tested insecticides the highest toxicity was shown by malathion (LC50 = 0.000 018%), pirimiphos-methyl had...

The role of the house fly (Musca domestica L.) in the transmission of Coxiella burnetii.

M Hucko

Folia Parasitologica 31[2] 177-181 (1984)

The flies which are fed a single rickettsia suspension keep their infectivity throughout their life and can contaminate environment as long as that. Under conditions of experiment their life span is 32 days. Coxiella burnetii survives in the faeces of flies as long as 80 days, in the dead flies as long as 90 days.

Isolation and properties of alpha-amylase from perienteric fluid of Ascaris suum.

J Zenka, J Prokopic

Folia Parasitologica 31[2] 183-186 (1984)

The properties of alpha-amylase from perienteric fluid of Ascaris suum were studied. The enzyme is strongly activated by chlorides at a simultaneous shift of pH optimum. It is fully activated already at 10(-3) M concentration of chlorides. A method of alpha-amylase isolation was modified with respect to these properties to give the purification degree 278 and yield of 11%.

Occurrence of ixodid ticks--the main vectors of tick-borne encephalitis virus in urbanized territory.

E Korenberg, V Cerný, M Daniel

Folia Parasitologica 31[4] 365-370 (1984)

The influence of urbanization on ticks I. ricinus and I. persulcatus--the main vectors of tick-borne encephalitis virus is discussed on the basis of concrete examples. It has been revealed that under favourable conditions the populations of these tick species can exist for a long time not only in towns and new housing estates, but in the old residential districts as well. The necessity of studying the ecology of urban populations of ixodid ticks is pointed out.

The feeding mechanism of intracellular muscle larvae, Trichinella nativa Britov et Boev, 1972 and T. pseudospiralis Garkavi, 1972.

D Hulínská, M Grim, B Shaikenov

Folia Parasitologica 32[1] 61 (1985)

We confirmed, with the electron microscope, that Trichinella larvae feed directly on the host tissue during their initial development. They suck, by means of a stylet acting as a piston, all components of the muscle cell which develops into a nurse cell, into their oral cavity. The stylet is controlled by a muscle retractor. At day 10 p.i., fragments of myofilaments and glycogen are present in the oesophagus of the larva of T. nativa, mitochondria occur in it at day 20 p.i. During the larval growth of T. pseudospiralis, remnants of a contractile material are present in the digestive system. The composition of the food ingested by the larva is in agreement...

Demodex flagellurus sp. n. (Acari: Demodicidae) from the preputial and clitoral glands of the house mouse, Mus musculus L.

V Bukva

Folia Parasitologica 32[1] 73 (1985)

An extremely large new demodicid, Demodex flagellurus sp. n., is described in all stages of its life cycle from the house mouse, Mus musculus L. Its habitat, the preputial and clitoral glands, is reported as new for demodicid mites. Adaptations to habitat, host transfer, and the potential of this species as a useful model in experimental studies on demodicid biology are discussed.

Chalone-like inhibition of DNA synthesis in helminths.

K Kudrna, J Prokopic

Folia Parasitologica 32[2] 145-149 (1985)

Chalone-like inhibitory activity was found in extracts from tissues of Taenia crassiceps cysticercus and tissues of adult Ascaris suum. The inhibitory effects were partially species nonspecific: The extracts from T. crassiceps larvae inhibit both T. crassiceps and Mesocestoides corti larvae DNA synthesis. Extracts from A. suum, however, inhibit only T. crassiceps. Besides them, the inhibitory factor from mouse brain inhibits both T. crassiceps and M. corti DNA synthesis. When the inhibitory factor from A. suum was applied 4 times during 24-hr culture (at 6-hr intervals), the inhibitory effect was decreased.

Identity of Argas (Argas) polonicus populations in Czechoslovakia and Poland.

F Dusbábek

Folia Parasitologica 32[2] 163 (1985)

The author made a morphological and biological comparison between the population of Argas (A.) polonicus Siuda, Hoogstraal, Clifford et Wassef, 1979 from Poland and the population of that species from Czechoslovakia, denoted in previous author's papers as Argas (A.) vulgaris Filippova, 1961. The comparison of morphometric features as well as the results obtained in the studies of those argasids in SEM have demonstrated some statistically significant differences which the author evaluates as intraspecific adaptive variability and does not attach any taxonomic importance to them. Experimental hybridization of P1 and F1 generations in both populations...

Penetration of ovicidal fungi through altered egg-shells of Ascaris suum.

V Chalupová, D Solcová

Folia Parasitologica 32[2] 189-192 (1985)

Ovicidal activity was studied in microscopic fungi penetrating into and destroying eggs of geohelminths surviving in the soil. The character of penetration was compared in eggs obtained mechanically with those obtained by means of a chemical process. A total of 13 strains of ovicidal fungi of 4 species were studied. The shells of eggs obtained by the chemical process were so altered that under the same conditions they were attacked and penetrated by the fungi much more than the eggs obtained by a mechanical way. The advantages and disadvantages of these two methods of eggs isolation are discussed.

Changes in the white blood picture during experimental larval ascariasis, toxocariasis and toxascariasis.

S Lukes

Folia Parasitologica 32[3] 237-245 (1985)

Haematological changes were studied in rabbits experimentally infected with different doses of Ascaris suum, Toxacara canis and Toxascaris leonina. The numbers of leucocytes, eosinophiles and neutrophiles were changed and the strongest eosinophila was observed between the 2nd and 3rd week of infection (5.2-7.1%). The intensity of reaction was not related to the used infection dose. The eosinophilia was always lower in toxocariasis and toxascariasis than in ascariasis at identical doses of infective material. Repeated infections resulted in an increase eosinophilia.

The response of captive rodents to the migration of Ancylostoma caninum larvae.

B O Fagbemi, O Fagbemi, O O Dipeolu

Folia Parasitologica 33[2] 157-162 (1986)

The distribution of the larvae of Ancylostoma caninum in tissues of captive wild rodents (Rattus rattus) and the leucocytic and behavioural responses of these rodents were studied after experimental oral infection. There was a wide distribution of larvae in tissues with a preponderance of the larvae in the skeletal muscles of the anterior part of the body in older infection. The rats responded by an elevation of total leucocytes and eosinophils in blood, alternation of locomotory activity and behavioural dominance that may have a correlation with predation and epidemiology of A. caninum in a sylvatic setting.
