Serum levels of aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase and worm burden in mice infected with Ancylostoma caninum larvae.
V V Vardhani
Folia Parasitologica 33[2] 163-167 (1986)
Aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase levels showed considerable increase during initial (1 to 9 days) period of infection in all the experimental groups of mice and their level reached higher values than in the controls. The increase of enzymes was influenced by the degree of retention of worm load and the immunological damage caused by Ancylostoma caninum larvae within the host system.

Folia Parasitologica 34[1] 69-74 (1987)
Bacteria were isolated from the haemolymph of Boophilus decoloratus and Boophilus geigyi which had engorged on trade cattle in Nigeria. All the genera of the bacteria were also isolated from the eggs which they laid although some of them were missing from the larvae which eventually hatched. When clean rabbits were inoculated with some genera of bacteria and clean, laboratory bred larvae of B. decoloratus and B. geigyi fed on them, the same genera of bacteria were subsequently isolated from the haemolymph of the engorged adults, the eggs they produced and the larvae which hatched from them. Staphylococcus pyogenes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were consistently...

Malic enzyme, malate dehydrogenase, fumarate reductase and succinate dehydrogenase in the larvae of Taenia crassiceps (Zeder, 1800).
J Zenka, J Prokopic
Folia Parasitologica 34[2] 131-136 (1987)
Malate dehydrogenase, malic enzyme, succinate dehydrogenase, and fumarate reductase activities have been studied in the cytoplasm and mitochondria of Taenia crassiceps larvae. The results show that these larvae contain enzymes for anaerobic acquisition of energy with terminal fumarate reductase, but some facts, as the high ratio of succinate dehydrogenase activity to fumarate reductase activity and the low proportion of fumarate reductase in the whole NADH oxidase activity in mitochondria, suggest that aerobic processes are also involved in the energy acquisition in this parasite.
Capillostrongyloides Ancistri sp. n. (Nematoda: Capillariidae) a new pathogenic parasite of aquarium fishes in Europe.
F Moravec, M Gelnar, J Rehulka
Folia Parasitologica 34[2] 157 (1987)
A new nematode species, Capillostrongyloides ancistri sp. n., is described from the intestine of aquarium-reared catfish Ancistrus dolichopterus Kner in Czechoslovakia. This fish is of South American origin and, therefore, C. ancistri sp. n. has probably been brought into aquaria in Europe from there. The parasite is characterized mainly by the structure of the male caudal end (presence of two large postanal papillae and the cuticular bursa supported by two caudal lobes), the length of a spicule (0.258-0.297 mm), the presence of a non-spiny spicular sheath, shape of the female end, structure of the stichosome (23-30 stichocytes present), and the size...

Demodex kutzeri sp. n. (Acari: Demodicidae), an identical parasite of two species of deer, Cervus elaphus and C. nippon pseudaxis.
V Bukva
Folia Parasitologica 34[2] 173 (1987)
Reports on demodicid mites of the old world species of deer are reviewed and Demodex kutzeri sp. n. (= D. cervi sensu Kutzer and Grünberg 1972; part.) described in all stages of the life cycle. The occurrence of D. kutzeri on two host species, Cervus elaphus L., 1758 and C. nippon pseudaxis Eydoux et Souleyet, 1841 is reported and discussed as a rare phenomenon in the genus Demodex.
Experimental infection of the squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) and the muskrat (Ondatra zibethica) with Tahyna virus (California group, Bunyaviridae).
P Rödl, V Bárdos, Z Hubálek
Folia Parasitologica 34[2] 189-191 (1987)
Two squirrels aged 16 weeks and three muskrats aged 24 weeks were subcutaneously infected with a dose of 400 SMicLD50 of the extraneurally passaged "236" strain of Tahyna virus. Viremia was detected in one squirrel (48 and 96 hours post infection) and in two muskrats (24 and 48 hours p.i.). Seroconversion was demonstrated by plaque-reduction neutralization test (PRNT) 21 days p.i. in all animals.
Contribution to the knowledge of Gyrodactylus gurleyi Price, 1937 (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae).
R Ergens, S S Yukhimenko
Folia Parasitologica 34[3] 205-209 (1987)
Gyrodactylus longoacuminatus Zitnan, 1964, forma minor sensu Ergens (1985) was identified as G. gurleyi Price, 1937. Morphological and metrical evaluations of the hard parts of opisthaptor of more than 200 specimens provided data on the variability of this parasite; Cyprinus carpio haematopterus represents its new host. Since the shape of the hard parts of opisthaptor of G. gurleyi is very similar to that of G. longoacuminatus, further detailed studies of the two species will be necessary, particularly of their reaction to the changes of environmental temperature.
Characteristics of malic enzyme from the cysticerci of Taenia crassiceps (Zeder, 1800).
J Zenka, J Prokopic
Folia Parasitologica 34[3] 233-241 (1987)
Kinetic parameters of partly purified malic enzymes (NADP+: L-malate oxidoreductase (decarboxylating) EC 1.1.1.40) from the cytoplasm and mitochondria of Taenia crassiceps cysticerci were compared. The cytoplasmic malic enzyme differed from the mitochondrial malic enzyme in the K'M for malate; other studied properties were identical. The chromatographies of both the cytoplasmic and mitochondrial enzymes were identical. They exhibited a hyperbolic dependence of the activity on malate concentration, sigmoidal kinetics was not observed. The effects of succinate and fumarate known as positive modulators of the activity of malic enzymes from other sources...

H Kumar, A Malhotra, S Santhanam, D C Jain, T K Ghosh
Folia Parasitologica 34[3] 249-254 (1987)
Using the antigens prepared from adult worms of B. malayi and D. immitis, a total of 37 malayan and 150 bancroftian serum samples were analysed for the presence of filarial specific antibodies by counterimmunoelectrophoresis and indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. It was observed that microfilaraemic cases do show good specific humoral immune responses against homologous as well as heterologous antigen. Of the two antigens used, B. malayi adult antigen was found to be superior to D. immitis antigen in the detection of filarial antibodies.

Interference with homologous immunity and faecal egg excretion in Schistosoma infections in mice concurrently infected with Trypanosoma brucei and Schistosoma mansoni.
B O Fagbemi
Folia Parasitologica 34[4] 317-322 (1987)
The effects of the blood protozoan, Trypanosoma brucei, was assessed on the homologous immunity to Schistosoma mansoni infection and the distribution of S. mansoni eggs in the tissues and faeces of dually infected mice. The trypanosome infection reduced the homologous protection induced by a primary S. mansoni infection against a challenge infection and the faecal excretion of eggs during the primary schistosome infection. The findings are discussed in relation to the immunosuppressive action of Trypanosoma infection.
Daniconema anguillae gen. et sp. n., a new nematode of a new family Daniconematidae fam. n. parasitic in European eels.
F Moravec, M Koie
Folia Parasitologica 34[4] 335 (1987)
A new nematode genus and species, Daniconema anguillae gen. et sp. n., is described from the serosa of the swimbladder and from the intestine of eels (Anguilla anguilla (L.] from Denmark (Lake Esrum, northern Zealand); a new family Daniconematidae fam. n. is established to accommodate it. The hitherto monotypic family Daniconematidae shows affinities with the Skrjabillanidae; in contrast to the latter, the new family is characterized by the absence of a buccal capsule, by the presence of anus in the female, and by different structure of the male tail (shape of the tail, absence of bursa-like caudal alae, number and distribution of papillae, presence...
Dispersal in patchy environments: effect on the prevalence of small mammal ectoparasites.
L Lundqvist, A Edler
Folia Parasitologica 34[4] 357-367 (1987)
Part-time ectoparasites on small mammals disperse via the habitat, while full-time parasites spread throughout the host population by direct contacts between host animals. It is therefore supposed that the effect of the natural environment is different for the two groups. This was studied as differences between observed and expected prevalence, the percentage of the infested host population, during different environmental conditions. Two possible mechanisms of such an effect were analysed, i.e. a) host selection and its change with host frequency and b) parasite migration and reproduction rates as reflected by the frequency distribution patterns on...

Folia Parasitologica 35[1] 11-16 (1988)
Entamoeba polecki Prowazek, 1912 was recorded for the first time in Czechoslovakia in two students from Kampuchea. Uninucleated cysts of diameter 14.2-15.7 micron with nuclei diameter 3.2-4.2 micron were found-repeatedly in stool samples taken from them. The nucleus accounted in average for 24.3% of the cyst diameter. The isolation and two following subinoculations on Dobell-Leidlaw medium were achieved, more abundant growth was recorded on medium with pig serum. Sera of both students were positive in serological tests using the E. histolytica antigen. No serious clinical symptoms were observed, both patients were cured successfully by metronidazole...
Transhydrogenase activities in the mitochondria of Taenia crassiceps (Zeder, 1800) cysticerci.
J Zenka, J Prokopic
Folia Parasitologica 35[1] 31-36 (1988)
NADPH/NAD and NADH/NAD transhydrogenase activities have been demonstrated in the mitochondrial fraction of Taenia crassiceps cysticerci. These activities seem to result from the activities of two different enzyme systems. Both transhydrogenase activities exhibited a high heat resistence and they were completely abolished only by the temperatures higher than 100 degrees C. The activity of NADH/NAD transhydrogenase was rather high (116 nmol.min-1.mg-1 protein), but it was found to exhibit a low affinity to NADH (K'M = 1.43.10(-4) M). The physiological significance of NADH/NAD transhydrogenase is discussed.

Bancroftian filariasis in the Igwun basin, Nigeria: an epidemiological, parasitological, and clinical study in relation to the transmission dynamics.
J K Udonsi
Folia Parasitologica 35[2] 147-155 (1988)
A 12-months study on bancroftian filariasis was carried out in the Igwun basin, Nigeria. A total of 1,418 individuals (768 males, and 650 females) were examined for microfilaremia and clinical filarial stigmata. There were 14.3% and 11.1% male and female point prevalence rates, respectively, and an overall prevalence of 12.8%. Prevalence rates and microfilarial density increased with age. The highest mff density of 35 mff/20 ml blood occurred in the 40-49 year old male individuals. Disease rates of 55.5 and 65.3% were recorded for males and females respectively. Chyluria (9.3% males, 16.7% females), hydrocele (17.8%), elephantiasis (15.9% males, 29.2%...
Chemotherapy of experimental toxoplasmosis with special reference to robenidine.
S K Bakhtari, J Jíra
Folia Parasitologica 35[3] 193-198 (1988)
Robenidine as an anticoccidial agent alone (in doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg) or in association with two other antiprotozoal compounds--pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine (in doses of 2.5 and 250 mg/kg, respectively) were tested in the treatment of chronically infected mice with an avirulent cyst-forming HF strain of Toxoplasma gondii. The efficacy of the used drugs was evaluated by the cysts number in the brains of treated mice versus control group, antibody level and viability of survived cysts by the consecutive infection of mice. According to these criteria none of the tested drugs alone or combined exhibited to be able to produce an effective cure of cyst-stage...
Rhabdochona longleyi sp. n. (Nematoda: Rhabdochonidae) from blind catfishes, Trogloglanis pattersoni and Satan eurystomus (Ictaluridae) from the subterranean waters of Texas.
F Moravec, D G Huffman
Folia Parasitologica 35[3] 235-243 (1988)
A new nematode species, Rhabdochona longleyi sp. n. is described from the intestine of two species of blind catfishes, Trogloglanis pattersoni Eigenmann (type host) and Satan eurystomus Hubbs et Bailey (both fam. Ictaluridae, Siluriformes) from the subterranean waters (artesian wells penetrating San Antonio pool of Edwards Aquifer) of Texas, USA. It is characterized largely by the presence of only six anterior teeth in the prostom, simple deirids, by the shape and length of spicules (0.42 to 0.50 mm and 0.093-0.102 mm), shape of the tail tip (rounded), and by filamented eggs. R. longleyi probably adapted to the environment of the aquifer by utilizing...
Stage-specific antibody response of Mastomys natalensis during the course of Dipetalonema viteae infection.
D P Singh, S Misra, R K Chatterjee
Folia Parasitologica 35[3] 245-252 (1988)
Stage-specific haemagglutinating (HA) and precipitin antibodies (PA) to infective larvae (L3), adult worms and microfilariae (mf) have been demonstrated in sera of Mastomys natalensis during the course of Dipetalonema viteae infection using indirect haemagglutination (IHA) and Ouchterlony's gel-diffusion tests. L3-specific HA antibody titre was shown to be quite low and lasted for shorter period whereas adult-specific antibody response was significantly higher and persisted for longer duration (beyond day 240 post exposure). No precipitin antibody to L3 stage could be detected, however, significant adult-specific antibody was detected which ultimately...
