Vipera berus and V-ammodytes (Serpentes: Viperidae) represent new hosts for Caryospora simplex (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) in Europe

Modry D, Koudela B, Volf J, Necas P, Hudcovic T

Folia Parasitologica 44[2] 99-102 (1997)

During a survey of the coccidian parasites of reptiles, caryosporan oocysts were found in the faeces of wild and captive European viperid snakes Vipera berus (L.) and V.ammodytes (L.). Thirty two of 37 examined V. berus (86%) and 9 of 17 examined V. ammodytes (53%) specimens were found to be passing caryosporan oocysts. Morphological characters of all caryosporan isolates were identical and fitted well with the description of Caryospora simplex Leger, 1904. Experimental inoculation of severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mice with seven isolates of C. simplex from V. berus or V. ammodytes confirmed the heteroxenous life cycle pattern, for the first...

Khawia baltica (Cestoidea: Caryophyllidea) from Barbus barbus bocagei from some rivers in Northern Portugal

Chubb JC, Eiras JC, Saraiva A

Folia Parasitologica 44[2] 131-138 (1997)

Eight species of fishes from rivers of Northern Portugal were examined for cestodes but only one, Barbus barbus bocagei (Steindachner), was infected: river Este (4 of 12 infected, 1,1,4 adult and 37 juvenile cestodes found respectively), Lima (1 of 8 infected, 1 juvenile cestode), Paiva (1 of 5 infected, 57 juvenile cestodes) and Sousa (1 of 13 infected, 1 adult cestode). The cestodes were Caryophyllidea. The fan-shaped scolex had very shallow incisions, with the scolex separated from the hindbody by a neck. The first vitelline follicles started a considerable distance anterior to the testes, with some vitelline follicles along the lateral margins...

Complement fixing antibody production in thymectomized Oncorhynchus mykiss, vaccinated against or infected with the pathogenic haemoflagellate Cryptobia salmositica

Feng SJ, Woo PTK

Folia Parasitologica 44[3] 188-194 (1997)

Short-term thymectomized (two months after thymectomy) adult rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) infected with the flagellate Cryptobia salmositica Katz, 1951 responded well during primary infection with C. salmositica and recovered fish also showed secondary response (rapid production of complement fixing antibody after homologous challenge) five months after recovery. Complement fixing antibody was detected during primary and secondary responses and the titres of complement fixing antibody in thymectomized fish were significantly lower than those in infected intact fish. The parasitaemia in thymectomized infected fish was significantly lower...

Long-term and seasonal changes in composition and richness of intestinal helminth communities in eels Anguilla anguilla of an isolated English river

Kennedy CR

Folia Parasitologica 44[4] 267-273 (1997)

The need for more long-term studies on helminth communities was addressed by examining changes in composition and diversity of the intestinal helminth component and infracommunities in eels of a small isolated river over 12 years. Examination of samples over one summer season indicated that single samples were representative of community richness in that year. In 1985 the community was species poor(1 species only) and with zero diversity, but by 1996 it comprised six species and all parameters at both levels indicated that it was the richest community yet reported from eels. This overall increase in diversity was not regular or uniform from year to...

Cryptosporidium parvum infection in experimentally infected mice: infection dynamics and effect of immunosuppression

Raquel Tarazona, David A. Blewett, Manuel Dominguez Carmona

Folia Parasitologica 45[2] 101-107 (1998)

The effect of mouse strain, age, sex, and the size of infective dose on the susceptibility to infection with the coccidium Cryptosporidium parvum Tyzzer, 1912 was determined using several murine models. Mice were infected with C. parvum oocysts originally of cervine origin, maintained by repeat passage in calves. All mice in the experimental groups proved susceptible to infection, though this resulted asymptomatic in all cases. C. parvum infection in BALB/c and Porton mice exhibited some variation. BALB/c mice demonstrated a longer prepatent period than Porton mice. They also produced a greater oocyst output over the patent period, though the differences...
