T N Soboleva, Z Zdárská, J Sterba, J Valkounová

Folia Parasitologica 35[4] 335 (1988)

The ultrastructure of the flame cell, excretory capillaries, ducts, collecting ducts, excretory bladder, and excretory pore of Brachylaimus aequans was studied 6-8 days p.i. The excretory ducts, collecting ducts and excretory bladder are provided with numerous lamellae on the luminal side. The cilia of lateral flames in the excretory ducts have a triated rootlet. The excretory pore is covered by a tegument identical with the body tegument. The syncytium of the excretory bladder is connected with the tegument of the excretory pore by means of a septate desmosome. No lipid or excretory corpuscles have been demonstrated in the excretory system.

J Valkounová, Z Zdárská, V Nasincová

Folia Parasitologica 36[1] 25 (1989)

E. revolutum redia digestive and excretory system ultrastructure, as well as body wall tegument were studied in TEM. The body tegument protrudes in short microvilli and contains uni- and multiciliate sensory endings. The anterior part of the digestive system (pharynx, short oesophagus) is lined with body tegument, the caecum being covered with a flat epithelium with sporadic microvilli. Oesophageal gland cells are filled with minute electron-dense granules. The excretory capillaries joined to large flame cells are composed of spirally wrapped cells, in the cytoplasm of which there are clusters of microtubules. The special features of the digestive...

Orthoptera as intermediate hosts of Staphylocystis furcata (Stieda, 1862) (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae).

B Rysavý

Folia Parasitologica 36[1] 43-47 (1989)

Cysticercoids of Staphylocystis furcata (Stieda, 1962), the adults of which parasitize the shrews (Soricidae), were found in the thoracic and abdominal cavities of orthopterous insects (Orthoptera, Acridioidea) belonging to five species: Chorthippus apricarius (L.), Chorthippus paralellus (Zett.), Omocestus viridulus (L.), Chrysochraon brachypterus (Ocsk.), and Chrysochraon dispar (Germ.). The cysticercoids are described and their incidence in both sexes of the examined intermediate hosts is compared.

Effect of T-activin on the course of experimental infection with Taenia crassiceps (Zeder, 1800) in mice.

J Hermánek, J Prokopic

Folia Parasitologica 36[2] 117-125 (1989)

T-activin--an immunomodulating preparation of polypeptidic character prepared from calf thymus--was used for influencing the course of infection in a model system mouse-Taenia crassiceps. A single s.c. application of 100 micrograms of T-activin at various intervals before and after infection resulted in a marked decrease in the number of cysticerci in peritoneal cavities of experimental mice (by 47.1-93.6%) compared to the controls. After s.c. application of T-activin and i.p. injection of antigen (crude T. crassiceps larvae homogenate from mice) the decrease in the cystricercus number was still more pronounced than in the mouse groups receiving only...

Metabolic differentiation of bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei brucei into procyclic forms. Effect of hydroxyurea, arabinosyl adenine, and serum omission.

A Markos, A Blahůsková, M Kalous, E Bysková, K Byska, E Nohýnková

Folia Parasitologica 36[3] 225-238 (1989)

Bloodforms of Trypanosoma brucei brucei STIB 247 taken from rats and containing more than 80 per cent short stumpy forms, differentiated in vitro to procyclic forms in medium SDM 79 (Brun and Schönenberger 1979), enriched with 3 mmol.dm-3 cis-aconitate. Cell division was abolished by the addition of hydroxyurea (200 micrograms.ml-1) or arabinosyl adenine (20 micrograms.ml-1 to the cultivation medium, or by the omission of serum from the medium. The ultrastructure of exponentially growing controls was rearranged within 24 h. The endogenous respiration and the respiration stimulated by proline, succinate, and 2-oxoglutarate were detectable within 12...

Population variability of some quantitative characters in Argas polonicus larvae (Acarina: Argasidae).

F Dusbábek

Folia Parasitologica 36[3] 281-287 (1989)

The nature of variability of quantitative morphometrical characters was studied in larvae of two local populations of Argas (Argas) polonicus Siuda, Hoogstraal, Clifford et Wassef, 1979 collected in Czechoslovakia and Poland. Statistically significant differences in five quantitative characters studied, in which the larvae of both wild populations differed from one another, disappeared during three generations of laboratory rearing. The variability of these characters was lower in laboratory populations than in field collected ticks. The results of hybridization experiments and analysis of variability of larvae of individual populations and parental...

Ultrastructural study of the glandular system and its participation in tegument formation in Echinostoma revolutum cercaria.

Z Zdárská

Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 307-312 (1989)

Six types of gland cells occurring in the body of developing Echinostoma revolutum cercaria are described at ultrastructural level. Three types of the gland cells, lateral, ventral and dorsal, release their secretion into the tegument of cercaria during its development in the media. Another three types, paraoesophageal, penetration and proper cytogenic gland cells are preserved in the body of the free-swimming cercaria. The paraoesophageal gland cells open on the tegument surface. Secretory granules of all types of gland cells and stratification of the body tegument arising by gradual release of the contents of the above mentioned three types of gland...

Microhabitats of monogenean gill parasites on European eel (Anguilla anguilla).

K Buchmann

Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 321-329 (1989)

The distribution of adult Pseudodactylogyrus anquillae and P. bini and postlarvae was recorded on glass-eels and pigmented eels of different size and infection intensity. The two species occupied different microhabitats on the host's gill apparatus but the preferred sites depended partly on host size. Postlarval migration was indicated. Mortality of young parasites, reinforcement of reproductive barriers and competition seems to be less likely explanations of the spatial distribution.

A new method for selective diagnostic staining of hooks of echinococci, cysticerci and tapeworms in histological sections.

J Sterba, P Milácek, J Vítovec

Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 341-344 (1989)

This paper describes a new method for selective staining of hooks of echinococci, cysticerci and tapeworms in histological sections. The method is based on pre-staining in hematoxylin, then the preparations are stained overnight in dilute polychrome blue and differentiated with tartrazine in Cellosolve (Ethylene glycol monoethyl ether or Ethylene glycol monomethyl ether). The hooks stain blue, nuclei brown to brown-green, and cell plasma is yellow. The hooks stain very brightly, which enables the identification of parasite remnants in granulomas and scars. The intensity of staining depends on the grade of maturity and sclerotization of hooks and these...

Paraphilometroides nemipteri gen. et sp. n. (Nematoda: Philometridae) from the marine fish Nemipterus peronii (Valenciennes) from Malaysia.

F Moravec, F Shaharom-Harrison

Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 345-350 (1989)

A new nematode species, Paraphilometroides nemipteri sp. n. is described from the female specimens collected from the dorsal fin and operculum of the marine perciforme fish, Nemipterus peronii off Kuala Terengganu coastal waters in Malaysia. It considerably differs from all other species in Philometridae in the structure of the head end (presence of wide dorsal and ventral cephalic cuticular alae supported by special inner transverse muscular formations) and, therefore, a new genus Paraphilometroides gen. n. has been erected to accommodate it. Additional characteristic features of P. nemipteri are the presence of cuticular bosses on the body, eight...

Scanning electron microscopic study on Toxascaris transfuga (Rudolphi, 1819) (Nematoda).

F Tenora, J Mituch, I Hovorka

Folia Parasitologica 36[4] 371-374 (1989)

The authors present original observations on the species Toxascaris transfuga obtained by means of scanning electron microscopy. Attention was paid to the structure of head end, morphology of papillae of the head and abdominal end, specific morphological traits of cloacae edges and morphology of the egg surface. Presented are morphological criteria which apparently differentiate the species T. transfuga from T. leonina (Linstow, 1902). T. transfuga and T. multipapillata Kreis, 1938 seem to be conspecific.

Double alteration of the small intestine in conventional and gnotobiotic piglets experimentally infected with the coccidium Isospora suis (Apicomplexa, Eimeriidae).

J Vítovec, B Koudela

Folia Parasitologica 37[1] 21-33 (1990)

The pathogenicity of the coccidium Isospora suis was studied in 42 conventional and 26 gnotobiotic piglets at 1-13 days post infection (DPI). The prepatent period of the coccidium I. suis was 4.5-5 days. Only in one experiment in conventional piglets the prepatent period of 3.5 days was recorded. At least 9 days pathogenesis of I. suis was recorded during which double alteration of the small intestine occurred. The first alteration was found at 3-4 DPI. The second phase of alterative changes was observed at 8-9 DPI. In comparison with gnotobiotic piglets in conventional piglets clinical signs and pathological changes used to appear one day sooner but...

Mammalian cell cultures affected by Naegleria gruberi.

D T John, R A John

Folia Parasitologica 37[2] 107 (1990)

Amebae of 8 strains of Naegleria gruberi were able to destroy 10 established mammalian cell lines including lung, kidney, ovary, connective tissue, neuroblastoma, and laryngeal and cervical carcinoma cells. The strains of N. gruberi varied in their ability to produce a destructive effect (DE) in African green monkey kidney (Vero) cell cultures. However, cell line susceptibility was found to be equivalent when tested with the considerably destructive 1518/l strain of N. gruberi. The Vero cell line proved to be a useful indicator culture for assessing the destructive potential of N. gruberi strains. Other factors affecting the extent of DE produced were...

Pathogenicity and ultrastructural pathology of Eimeria debliecki (Douwes, 1921) in experimentally infected pigs.

J Vítovec, B Koudela

Folia Parasitologica 37[3] 193-199 (1990)

It was confirmed, after experimental infection of 24 weaned pigs with different doses (200,000 and 4 mil.) of Eimeria debliecki oocysts that the developmental cycle of E. debliecki occurs in the anterior jejunum and after a high dose of oocysts also in the duodenum and anterior parts of the middle jejunum. Pathological changes characterized by a light atrophy of the villi, scarcely dispersed minute erosions of the epithelium in upper parts of the mucosa and an inflammatory response in the propria of the anterior jejunum were found in the area of the largest occurrence of developmental stages of E. debliecki (from 50 cm to 100 cm from the pylorus)....

V Barus, T P Sergeeva

Folia Parasitologica 37[3] 237-248 (1990)

A new genus, Ornithocapillaria gen. n., belonging to the family Capillariidae and subfamily Baruscapillariinae is described and its diagnosis is given. The type species of the genus is Ornithocapillaria ovopunctata (Linstow, 1873) comb. n., other species are O. cylindrica (Eberth, 1863) comb. n., O. quiscali (Read, 1949) comb. n., and O. picorum (Rudolphi, 1819) comb. n. The new genus is characterized by a relatively large membranous pseudobursa, shape of processes supporting pseudobursa, and presence of a vulval appendage in female. It includes only species parasitic in the intestine of birds of the orders Passeriformes, Falconiformes, Strigiformes,...

Francisella tularensis from ixodid ticks in Czechoslovakia.

Z Hubálek, Z Juricová, J Halouzka

Folia Parasitologica 37[3] 255-260 (1990)

A total of 26,478 ixodid ticks (935 pools) were examined by intracerebral inoculation of suckling mice. Six species of ticks were tested: Ixodes ricinus (23,470 individuals), I. trianguliceps (12), Haemaphysalis punctata (831), H. concinna (39), Dermacentor reticulatus (69) and D. marginatus (2,057). The ticks were collected largely by flagging vegetation, a substantial minority (4%) from animals. Three strains of Francisella tularensis were isolated, one each from I. ricinus (males, district Breclav, southern Moravia), D. reticulatus (males, district Breclav) and D. marginatus (engorged females collected from sheep in Roznava district, eastern Slovakia)....

Experimental infection of ticks Ixodes ricinus with tick-borne encephalitis virus under different microclimatic conditions.

V Danielová

Folia Parasitologica 37[3] 279-282 (1990)

The influence of environmental temperature and relative air humidity on the development of ticks Ixodes ricinus and their infection rate with tick-borne encephalitis virus was studied. It was found that the temperature influenced significantly the development of ticks, but it did not influence their infection rate. To the contrary, the relative air humidity influenced the infection rate. It is assumed that the intrinsic factors play a primary role in the infection of ticks, while extrinsic factors have a secondary role; they are probably important at border values only.

SOME ASPECTS OF THE PRESENCE OF SURFACE - ASSOCIATED ACID MUCOSUBSTANCES ON LARVAL TAENIA-SAGINATA INFECTING SUITABLE AND UNSUITABLE HOSTS

J SCHRAMLOVA, K BLAZEK, J PROKOPIC

Folia Parasitologica 37[4] 307-312 (1990)

The coat of acid mucosubstances occurring on the bladder surface was studied in Cysticercus bovis (larvae of Taenia saginata) developing in specific (cattle) and nonspecific (some other ruminants) intermediate hosts. In cysticerci developing in nonspecific intermediate hosts, this coat is absent or poorly developed even at the time when it is completely formed on the bladder surface of C. bovis from cattle. If the cysticercus develops up to the infective stage in a nonspecific intermediate host, it is usually localized outside the muscles: in the brain, lungs or liver. Its bladder is then also covered by a coat of acid mucosubstances. The absence...

PATHOMORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN ROE DEER LUNGS DURING ONTOGENY OF VARESTRONGYLUS-CAPREOLI (STROH ET SCHMID, 1938) DOUGHERTY, 1945

R SVARC, A PAJERSKY

Folia Parasitologica 37[4] 315-321 (1990)

The specification of pathomorphological changes occurring during Varestrongylus capreoli ontogenesis was studied on the basis of different forms of inflammation. The character, course and extent of inflammatory reactions were contingent on the maturity, localization and number of worms. The allergic inflammation accompanying the development of juvenile specimens inside the alveoli was followed by the regeneration of lung tissues providing suitable conditions for further development of the parasite. A prolonged edema occurring during the differentiation of juvenile parasites localized in the bronchioles caused a disposition of the roughen bronchial...

DYNAMICS OF ANTIBODY-PRODUCTION IN MICE INFECTED WITH TOXASCARIS-LEONINA LINSTOW, 1909

V FIGALLOVA, J PROKOPIC

Folia Parasitologica 37[4] 351-354 (1990)

Using counterimmunoelectrophoresis and ELISA tests the dynamics of antibody production in serum of mice experimentally infected with Toxascaris leonina was studied. The production of antibodies using both tests has already been detectable in serum of mice from 7 days post infection (DPI) and their level persisted till the end of the experiment, i.e. till 77 DPI. The most positive were reactions of sera with Antigens 1 and 3.

A NEW HUFFMANELA SPECIES, H-SCHOUTENI SP-N (NEMATODA, TRICHOSOMOIDIDAE) FROM FLYING FISHES IN CURACAO

F MORAVEC, BG CAMPBELL

Folia Parasitologica 38[1] 29-32 (1991)

A new nematode species, Huffmanela schouteni sp. n., has been established on the basis of its egg morphology and biological characters (adult nematodes are unknown). The dark-shelled eggs of this histozoic parasite occur in masses in the abdominal cavity, serose covers of internal organs and in the liver of the flying fishes Hirundichthys affinis Gunther (type host) and Cypselurus cyanopterus Cuvier et Valenciennes in Curacao. The eggs of H. schouteni sp. n. differ from those in other congeneric species mainly in the absence of small spines on the surface of the transparent envelope enclosing the egg proper, measurements (size of eggs 0.069-0.075 x...

ULTRASTRUCTURE OF THE DIGESTIVE-TRACT OF ECHINOSTOMA-REVOLUTUM CERCARIA

Z ZDARSKA

Folia Parasitologica 38[2] 179-181 (1991)

The digestive tract of a fully formed free-swimming cercaria of Echinostoma revolutum (Froelich, 1802) Dietz, 1909 was studied by electron microscopy. The oral sucker and pharynx are covered by a tegument. The oesophagus and the caeca are not luminized. They are packed with giant epithelial cells with electron-dense granules of irregular shape, rough endoplasmic reticulum and its cisterns, and Golgi apparatus. The tegument of the oral sucker cavity contains numerous uniciliate receptors.
